If changing WordPress Address or Site Address locked you out, open /wp-login.php directly, clear the site’s cookies, and then make home and siteurl agree with the URL you actually intend to use. If you cannot reach the login form, temporarily define WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL in wp-config.php, then correct the stored values in the database.

Why a WordPress URL change can lock you out
WordPress keeps two canonical URL settings. siteurl is the address where the WordPress core files are installed. home is the public address visitors type and the address WordPress uses for the front end. They may be identical, but they serve different purposes.

A lockout usually means these values, the WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL constants, or the server’s redirect rules disagree about the scheme, host, or path. For example, one layer may still use http:// while another forces https://, or one value may contain www while another does not.

WordPress expects the complete URL, including https:// when HTTPS is in use, with no slash at the end. Thus use https://example.com, not example.com or https://example.com/. If WordPress is genuinely installed in a subdirectory, include that path in the setting that points to the installation.
Start with the direct login endpoint
- Open
https://your-domain.example/wp-login.php, replacing the example host with your intended domain. - If
/wp-admin/was the address you tried, remember that logged-out visitors are normally redirected to the login page automatically. A redirect to/wp-login.phpis therefore expected. - If the form keeps reloading, sends you in a loop, or a successful login immediately appears logged out, clear cookies and site data for the old and new host. Then close the browser tab and try a private window.
Do not begin by repeatedly retrying a password. A URL or cookie mismatch can prevent a valid authentication cookie from being accepted.

Force the intended URL temporarily in wp-config.php
Use this method when you can edit files through hosting file management, SFTP, or another file-access method but cannot use the dashboard. Make a copy of wp-config.php before editing.

- Open the WordPress installation’s
wp-config.php. - Insert these lines above the comment that says to stop editing:
define( 'WP_HOME', 'https://example.com' );
define( 'WP_SITEURL', 'https://example.com' );- Replace the example URL with the exact intended scheme, host, and installation path. Do not add a trailing slash.
- Save the file and revisit
https://example.com/wp-login.php. - Clear cookies again if the browser still sends you to the old host.
These constants override the values stored in the database; they do not rewrite those rows. Treat them as a recovery measure, not a permanent substitute for correcting the database. Once the database is authoritative and correct, remove the temporary definitions. If you remove them while the old values are still stored, WordPress will revert to those old values and the lockout can return.
Correct home and siteurl in the database
Use this route when you have phpMyAdmin, Adminer, or equivalent database access. Back up the database first so you can restore the original values if a mistake is made.
Find the right options table
- Open the database used by this WordPress installation.
- Locate the options table. Its name is often
wp_options, but the installation may use a different prefix. - Search the
option_namecolumn for exactlysiteurlandhome.
Edit the two rows
- Set the
siteurlrow to the address where the WordPress core files reside. - Set the
homerow to the public address visitors should use. - Include
https://when HTTPS is the intended scheme, match the host spelling exactly, include a real installation subdirectory where required, and omit the final slash. - Save both rows, then test
/wp-login.phpin a private browser window.

WHERE option_name = 'home';Replace wp_options with the actual table name and use the correct value for each row if the core files and public site are intentionally at different addresses. Never run an update against an assumed prefix without confirming the table first.
Replace old URLs throughout the site with WP-CLI
Changing the two options fixes the canonical addresses but does not necessarily change URLs embedded in posts, menus, widgets, serialized plugin settings, or other database records. When the old address appears in many places, use the WordPress-aware wp search-replace command rather than a blind SQL replacement; WP-CLI can account for serialized data.
Run a dry run first
From the WordPress installation directory, with shell access and a recent database backup, run a dry run using the old and new values:

wp search-replace 'http://old.example' 'https://new.example' --all-tables-with-prefix --dry-runReview the reported tables and replacement count. Include the exact old scheme, host, and path that actually occur in the database. If the site moved from a non-www host to a www host, that host difference must be reflected in the search string.
Apply the replacement
When the dry-run output is correct, run the same command without --dry-run:
wp search-replace 'http://old.example' 'https://new.example' --all-tables-with-prefixDo not skip the backup. A broad replacement can affect plugin data and custom tables, and reversing it requires knowing exactly which old and new strings were used. Afterward, return to the options table and verify that home and siteurl contain the intended canonical values.
Tell a URL problem from a fatal PHP error
A redirect loop, wrong-domain redirect, or login form that will not retain a session points toward URL, cookie, cache, or redirect configuration. A white screen or an explicit “There has been a critical error on this website” message is a different failure.
Use Recovery Mode for fatal errors
WordPress Recovery Mode was introduced in version 5.2. When WordPress detects a fatal error caused by a plugin, theme, or custom code, it can send the administrator a recovery link. That link creates a protected session in which the faulty component can be paused while you regain access and repair or remove it.

- Log in through the protected session.
- Use the error details to identify the plugin, theme, or custom code responsible.
- Disable, update, or repair that component, then test the normal login in a fresh browser session.
Recovery Mode does not correct incorrect home or siteurl values. If the symptom is a redirect loop rather than a fatal error, use the URL recovery steps instead.
Fix redirect loops after access returns
Once you can log in, check every layer that can generate a redirect. Work from WordPress settings outward so that a hidden old value is not mistaken for a browser problem.
- Confirm that the database rows and any remaining
WP_HOMEorWP_SITEURLdefinitions use the same intended scheme, host, and path. - Check for mixed HTTP and HTTPS values. A site that is forced to HTTPS by the server but still stores HTTP in one canonical setting can bounce between addresses.
- Inspect reverse-proxy, CDN, Nginx, and Apache redirect rules for the old domain or an incorrect scheme. These rules can redirect before WordPress runs.
- Clear browser cookies, plugin caches, and CDN caches after changing the canonical URL.
- Test both the front end and
/wp-admin/in a private window, then test a normal administrator login. - View generated links and confirm they use the intended domain, path, and HTTPS scheme. If only some links are wrong, search-replace may still be needed for stored content or plugin data.
Security cleanup after the repair
Remove temporary URL constants from wp-config.php after the database contains the correct values. Also remove any emergency RELOCATE constant you may have added while troubleshooting. WordPress documentation warns that leaving RELOCATE in the file can be insecure because, in some configurations, an attacker could change the site URL.
Keep the backup until you have confirmed that the front end, login, media links, administrative links, and any reverse-proxy or CDN cache all work from a new session. Then store the backup securely according to your normal retention policy.
