If HBO Max doesn’t appear on your Firestick, start by searching the current app name in Fire TV’s official Amazon Appstore and checking your device’s model and Fire OS version. Max’s device guide lists Amazon Fire TV devices running Fire OS 5 or later, including Fire TV Stick, but the retrieved guide is old and uses the name Max. Confirm the current listing and requirements in your local store before drawing conclusions about compatibility.
First, check the Fire TV app store
- From the Fire TV home screen, open Find.
- Search for the app using the name currently shown in your regional Amazon Appstore. Max’s device guide gives the route as Find → search Max → select the app → download, but its retrieved version may not reflect the store’s current name.
- If the official app appears, select it and choose the download option. If it does not appear, continue with the device and software checks below.
Use the official Amazon Appstore rather than an unofficial download. The available evidence does not establish that a particular country, account restriction, outage, or device defect is the reason an app is missing from search.

Check the Firestick model and software
Find your exact Fire TV model and Fire OS version in the device settings. Max’s retrieved compatibility guide says Amazon Fire TV devices with Fire OS 5 or later are supported and includes Fire TV Stick, but that statement is not a guarantee that every Fire TV Stick model meets current requirements.
- Open Settings → My Fire TV → About → Check for System Update.
- Install an available update, then search the local app store again.
Settings labels can vary by device and software version. If the official app still does not appear, check the current local Amazon Appstore listing and the requirements for your exact model before considering a replacement. A new device is not a general fix for a store catalog or regional availability issue.

If the app is installed but will not open
An app that is present but malfunctioning needs a different fix from one that is absent from store search. Max’s Fire TV troubleshooting guidance recommends these steps:
- Open the app and sign out.
- Restart the Fire TV device.
- Check for an app update: highlight the app tile, press the remote’s Menu button, then choose More Info → Update if that option is available.
- If the problem continues, open Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications, select the app, and clear its cache and data. Clearing data may require you to sign in again.
- If needed, uninstall the app and reinstall it from the Amazon Appstore.
If the problem is buffering or playback
Buffering is not an explanation for why an app is missing from search. If the app opens but video loads slowly or pauses, check the Fire TV connection under Settings → Network. Test another supported device to see whether the issue is limited to Fire TV. Max’s separate buffering guidance includes reinstalling the app when buffering occurs only on Fire TV.

Check account access after installation
Once the app is installed, sign in with the account associated with your subscription. Account or subscription access can affect whether you can watch, but the available support guidance does not identify it as a cause of the app being absent from the store.
