Developers still decide what to build, give tools the right context, check the result, fit it into a larger system, and take responsibility for what happens after release. AI changes where effort goes; it does not make engineering judgment optional.
Why writing code is only part of a developer’s job
A software change has to solve a real problem within constraints: existing architecture, user needs, security and privacy requirements, performance limits, and operational practices. Generated code can help with implementation, but it cannot reliably infer every undocumented assumption or decide which trade-off the team should accept.

Microsoft Research’s 2025 Future of Work report cites prior studies estimating that software engineers spend about 15% to 25% of their time developing code. That range is reported in Microsoft’s synthesis; it is not a new measurement by Microsoft. The same report argues that lines of code are a poor productivity measure because they can be gamed and capture only a slice of the work. Microsoft Research’s report

When AI drafts part of the implementation, those responsibilities do not disappear. Some may become more important because a larger volume of plausible-looking code can arrive faster than a team can safely absorb it.

What developers do when AI generates the implementation
Define the problem and provide context
A useful result starts with a precise request: what behavior should change, what must remain unchanged, which files or interfaces matter, and what constraints apply. Developers supply that context and resolve ambiguities that a prompt cannot settle on its own. They also decide whether the request itself is sound and whether the proposed scope belongs in the system.
Review behavior, not just syntax
Review is not a quick glance to see whether the code compiles. A developer needs to check the output against the requirement, look for edge cases, consider security and privacy implications, and confirm that tests exercise the relevant behavior. They should be able to explain what the change does and why it is acceptable.
Integrate the change into a real system
A snippet can be locally correct and still be a poor fit. It may conflict with architecture, rely on an incompatible library, duplicate existing functionality, or fail under the system’s actual data and load. Developers connect the change to surrounding code, build and release processes, documentation, and operational expectations.

Own the consequences
Someone must decide whether the change is ready to ship, notice when it fails in production, and coordinate a fix. AI output does not take responsibility for an outage, a data exposure, or a feature that harms users. Accountability remains with the people and organization deploying the software.
Why adoption does not mean developers trust every answer
Stack Overflow’s 2025 survey found that 84% of respondents were using or planning to use AI tools in development, and 51% of professional developers said they used them daily. Yet 46% distrusted the accuracy of AI output, compared with 33% who trusted it; just 3% said they highly trusted it. These are survey responses, not measurements of every developer or a controlled test of output quality. Stack Overflow’s 2025 developer survey
That gap between use and trust is practical, not contradictory. A tool can be useful for a first draft while still requiring careful verification. In the same survey, 66% reported frustration with solutions that were almost right but not quite, and 45% said debugging AI-generated code was more time-consuming. A near miss can cost more to diagnose than a straightforward manual implementation, especially when its assumptions are hard to spot.

Asked when they would still seek another person’s help if AI could do most coding tasks, 75% selected “When I don’t trust AI’s answers.” Developers need colleagues for context, judgment, and a second perspective—not only for typing code.
Which tasks are sensible to delegate to AI?
There is no universal safe list. Decide task by task, using the cost of failure, the ability to verify the result, how much hidden context matters, and the effort required to integrate it. A developer should be more cautious when a task affects sensitive data, critical systems, or production operations, or when success depends on knowledge that is not written down.

The organizational setting matters too. DORA’s 2025 report, drawing on nearly 5,000 technology professionals and more than 100 hours of qualitative data, describes AI as an “amplifier” of existing organizational strengths and dysfunctions. Strong testing, clear ownership, and effective review can help a team handle AI-assisted changes; weak practices can magnify confusion and defects. Stack Overflow respondents also expressed caution about delegating work beyond code generation: 76% did not plan to use AI for deployment and monitoring, and 69% did not plan to use it for project planning. Those figures describe respondents’ stated plans in that survey, not a permanent boundary on how tools may be used.

AI fluency matters, but it is not a replacement for engineering fundamentals. A 2025 qualitative study by Kam and colleagues examined 21 developers, 12 work goals, and 75 associated tasks. The authors identified four knowledge domains used across a six-step workflow: effective use of generative AI, core software engineering, adjacent engineering, and adjacent non-engineering knowledge. The small study offers a way to think about the breadth of work; it is not a representative survey of the profession. Kam et al.’s 2025 developer study
- Use AI deliberately: communicate requirements, relevant context, constraints, and expected checks; then inspect what the tool returns.
- Strengthen core engineering: practice debugging, testing, architecture, code review, and security. These skills help determine whether an answer is correct and maintainable.
- Learn the system and its domain: understand how the software is used, how its components interact, and what failures would mean for users or the organization.
- Develop adjacent skills: communicate trade-offs, collaborate on requirements, and understand operational and business constraints that shape a sound technical solution.
Gartner forecast in 2024 that 80% of the engineering workforce would need to upskill through 2027. That is a forecast, not a measured outcome. Gartner also reported that 56% of surveyed software engineering leaders rated AI/ML engineer as the most in-demand role for 2024, based on a Q4 2023 survey of 300 organizations in the United States and United Kingdom. Gartner’s proposed “AI-first” mindset—steering AI agents toward relevant context and constraints—is likewise a forecast of how roles may change, not a description that applies to every developer today. Learning to direct tools is useful, but reducing the job to prompt writing would miss the engineering and domain knowledge needed to judge the result.
Will AI eliminate developer jobs?
The evidence cited here does not establish whether AI will reduce or increase the total number of developer jobs. Gartner forecasts role changes and upskilling, but those forecasts do not prove net job loss or growth. Adoption rates and opinions about AI tools also cannot answer that employment question by themselves.
The more supportable conclusion is that the work is changing: code generation can shift time toward specifying, reviewing, integrating, and validating changes. How that shift affects staffing will depend on factors such as demand for software, organizational choices, and the tasks that teams can safely automate. No single survey statistic settles the outcome.
