They work on Nintendo Switch 2, too, and Nintendo says you do not need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to buy or play them. The timing is a fitting way to mark Pokémon’s 30th anniversary—but the rereleases do not mean every older Pokémon game is now available on Switch.
Which classic Pokémon games can you play on Switch in 2026?
The confirmed classic mainline releases at the center of this return are Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version, sold separately as digital downloads on Nintendo eShop. Nintendo announced their return in 2026 as part of the franchise’s 30th-anniversary celebrations. For Australia, Nintendo announced a February 28, 2026 release date; check your region’s eShop for local availability and date details. Nintendo says both games are playable on Nintendo Switch 2 as well as Nintendo Switch-family systems. Nintendo Australia’s announcement

These are the 2004 Game Boy Advance remakes of the original Kanto adventures, Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green, first released in Japan in 1996. They feature the original 151 Pokémon and retain familiar GBA-era mechanics including abilities, natures, weather conditions, held items, and the choice of player character gender. They are not simply the original Game Boy games, nor are they a release of every classic generation.
What changed in the Switch versions?
Nintendo describes the games’ contents as broadly the same as the original releases, while noting that some specifications differ because of the hardware. The most useful practical change is connectivity: the Switch versions use built-in local wireless in place of the original Game Boy Advance link methods. Nintendo says up to four other players can join the Wireless Club to trade, battle, or play a minigame. Nintendo Support’s FireRed and LeafGreen FAQ
#1 Best Overall
- Don the role of a Pokémon Trainer as you travel through Kanto
- Discover a new species of Pokémon with the Pokémon Lets Go series
- Catch Pokémon in the wild using a gentle throwing motion with either a Joy-Con controller or a Poké Ball Plus accessory, which will light up, vibrate, and make sounds to bring your adventure to life
- See the world in style by customizing Pikachu and your Trainer with a selection of outfits
- Connect to Pokémon GO* to transfer caught Kanto-region Pokémon, including Alolan and Shiny forms, as well as the newly discovered Pokémon, Meltan, from that game to this one
The wireless feature is local, not internet-based. Nintendo Support states, “Online play is not supported.” So the rereleases make nearby multiplayer more convenient than carrying the old link cable or adapter, but they do not provide online trading or battles.
Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?
No. Nintendo Support says, “A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not needed to purchase or play these games.” The FAQ also says the releases are standalone software and are not planned for the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics collection. You buy each title individually through eShop rather than accessing it through a Classics subscription tier. Nintendo Support FAQ

- Meet countless characters from the beloved series
- High-end visuals, modern resolutions and carefully polished gameplay
- Brand new horde mode multiplayer for up to two players, online and splitscreen
Can you transfer Pokémon to Pokémon HOME?
Nintendo says players will be able to transfer Pokémon from FireRed and LeafGreen to Pokémon HOME, but that is a planned feature rather than confirmed current availability. The current Pokémon HOME compatibility information does not list these Switch versions among supported games. Check that page again before relying on a transfer workflow; an announced plan is not the same as a feature you can use today.
How to choose a way to revisit older Pokémon
| Option | What it offers | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Switch or Switch 2 digital rereleases | Official access to FireRed and LeafGreen; local wireless trading and battles | Digital-only, sold individually; no online play. Check regional eShop availability and language versions. |
| Original Game Boy Advance releases | The original 2004 cartridges and their original hardware-era experience | Requires compatible hardware and physical copies; original link methods differ from Switch local wireless. |
| Other classic Pokémon titles | Different generations and game styles | Availability varies; the announcement does not confirm other mainline rereleases for Switch. |
For someone who wants the Kanto remakes on current hardware, the Switch versions are the straightforward official route. If you specifically want another generation, check its availability rather than assuming it has joined the eShop. Nintendo’s FAQ mentions Pokémon titles in its Classics collections but does not announce additional potential titles; rumors of other rereleases should not be treated as confirmation. Why 2026 is a good moment to return
The case for 2026 is practical and celebratory, not a claim that these are objectively the best Pokémon games. Two landmark Kanto remakes have returned as standalone digital games for current Switch-family systems, with local wireless built in and no subscription required to play. Nintendo tied their return to Pokémon’s 30th anniversary, giving longtime players a natural reason to revisit the region and newcomers a clear entry point into the series’ earlier style. The games remain rooted in their 2004 design, so expect a GBA-era adventure rather than modern features such as online multiplayer.
Before buying, confirm your region’s eShop listing and preferred language edition: Nintendo notes that language versions are separate. There is no physical Switch release of these two games, and current prices depend on the regional storefront.
