Start with the instruction shown by your camera, then check the manual for your exact model before testing a lens or memory card. If the error returns after the model-specific basic steps, note when it appears and contact Canon service.
What Err 99 means—and what it does not
The code’s meaning depends on the EOS model. Canon’s EOS 350D manual describes Err 99 as an error other than the codes listed before it. Canon support guidance for other models says to restart the camera or remove and reinstall the battery, and to contact service if the same error continues. Neither description identifies one universal failed component.

The EOS 350D manual also says: “This error may occur if you use a non-Canon lens and the camera or lens does not operate properly.” That is a model-specific possibility, not proof that a third-party lens—or any particular part—is responsible on every camera. Canon’s official sources do not establish that Err 99 always means a shutter failure, dirty contacts, or a weak battery.
For the exact wording and steps that apply to your camera, find its manual using the model number and follow its error-code guidance. Models can group and describe errors differently.

What to do when your Canon displays Err 99
- Record the details. Note the EOS model, the full message or code, and when it appears: at startup, after pressing the shutter, after using flash, or while saving an image. Also note recent changes, such as switching lenses.
- Follow the displayed instruction and restart. Canon’s general guidance is to switch the camera off and on again or remove and reinstall the battery. Use the procedure in your model’s manual; do not force a battery door, battery, or lens mount. Canon’s guidance is available at Canon India support.
- Check the lens only if the manual permits it. If you have a compatible, known-good lens, testing it can help determine whether the error occurs with one lens or with more than one. This is a diagnostic clue, not a repair or a definite component diagnosis.
- Clean accessible electrical contacts gently, if appropriate. Canon recommends cleaning contacts in its guidance for lens-communication problems. Use a clean, soft cloth and take care not to let debris enter the camera body. Avoid abrasive tools and liquids unless the camera or lens maker specifically directs their use.
- Check the card only when the model guidance or symptoms point to it. Err 99 by itself does not establish that a card is faulty. If the camera displays a separate card-specific code, follow that code’s instructions rather than treating it as Err 99. Canon’s card guidance may include reinserting, replacing, or formatting a card; use the instructions for your model.
- Back up images before formatting. Formatting erases images and other data on the card. Do not format a card until you have copied any files you need.
- Contact service if Err 99 persists. Canon advises writing down the error code and consulting a service center when the same error keeps appearing. Do not continue changing parts or handling the camera if the manual does not recommend it.
How to interpret the pattern
- Err 99 occurs with one lens only: The lens or its communication with the camera is a plausible area to investigate. Canon community guidance for older EOS models suggests having that lens examined, but the pattern alone does not confirm the cause.
- Err 99 occurs with multiple compatible lenses: This shifts attention toward the camera body, but it still does not identify a failed component. If the prescribed restart does not resolve the issue, Canon recommends service.
- The camera displays a distinct card error: Follow the card instructions for that code. Do not assume that a card-specific error and Err 99 mean the same thing.
- The message appears just after a shot: The EOS 350D manual cautions that the picture might not have been captured. When the camera is ready again, check playback before trying the shot again or changing the card.
When contacting service, report the model, exact code, when it occurs, whether it happens with more than one compatible lens, and what the manual’s restart step changed. These details help describe the problem; they do not establish a specific repair.
