Plasma Firewall is a KDE System Settings module for configuring an existing Linux firewall backend—UFW or firewalld—not a firewall of its own. KDE describes it as a simplified way to manage those systems, which may make routine settings easier to reach than firewalld’s separate firewall-config application. Whether it is “way better” depends on what you need: a streamlined panel and a full-featured firewalld tool serve different purposes.
What Plasma Firewall does
KDE introduced Plasma Firewall with Plasma 5.21 in February 2021, describing the module as a simplified interface for configuring UFW and firewalld. KDE’s announcement establishes the module’s intended role; it does not establish that it is objectively better than other firewall interfaces. KDE’s Plasma 5.21 announcement

The module is a control panel for firewall software already present on the Linux system. It does not replace the backend, create a separate network firewall, or by itself guarantee that firewall protection is enabled. KDE’s repository describes the project as a system firewall control panel and lists UFW or firewalld as a dependency. Its README documents Plasma 5 requirements, so it should not be treated as proof of current Plasma 6 compatibility or availability in a particular distribution. KDE’s Plasma Firewall repository

How it compares with firewalld’s own GUI
The comparison is not simply between two firewalls. Plasma Firewall is integrated into KDE System Settings; firewall-config is a separate graphical tool for configuring the firewalld backend. The firewalld manual identifies it as a GUI configuration tool for firewalld. firewalld’s firewall-config manual

| Question | Plasma Firewall | firewall-config |
|---|---|---|
| Where do you find it? | KDE System Settings module, as described by KDE’s 2021 announcement. | Separate graphical configuration tool for firewalld, according to the firewalld manual. |
| Which backend does it configure? | KDE documents UFW and firewalld. | firewalld. |
| How much firewalld detail is exposed? | The available sources describe a simplified interface but do not establish which firewalld controls or concepts it exposes. | The firewalld project documents zones and runtime and permanent settings; this does not prove that every feature is exposed in the GUI. |
Why firewalld can feel more involved
firewalld organizes rules through zones, which associate a trust level with networks and their connections, interfaces, or sources. It also distinguishes runtime settings from permanent settings. Those concepts give administrators a more detailed model to work with, but the available documentation does not provide a control-by-control comparison with Plasma Firewall. firewalld documentation
The practical trade-off is integration and simplicity versus the need to work directly with firewalld’s configuration model. A streamlined settings page can be more convenient for basic management; someone who needs to inspect or adjust firewalld-specific behavior may prefer its dedicated tool. The sources do not support a universal winner.

What to check before using it
- Identify the backend: Plasma Firewall’s documented backends are UFW and firewalld. The graphical module configures the backend rather than replacing it.
- Check your distribution’s packages: availability and defaults vary by distribution. The available sources do not establish current package names, installation commands, or whether your system includes the module.
- Verify your Plasma version: KDE announced the module for Plasma 5.21, while the repository’s Plasma 5 requirements do not establish current Plasma 6 support.
- Choose the right level of control: use the integrated panel for a simpler settings experience if your distribution provides it; use firewalld’s own GUI when you need to work with firewalld-specific concepts.
A separate project called Cinderward also describes itself as a firewalld GUI with zone-based controls for services, ports, and forwarding. Its repository lists Nitrux 5.1.0 or newer and firewalld 2.3.1 or newer among its requirements, so treat it as a project to investigate rather than a general recommendation for every Plasma system. Is it actually better?
A Yahoo-hosted search result for a ZDNET article dated September 24, 2026 characterized Plasma Firewall as easier to use than the default firewalld GUI and noted its integration into Settings. The article page was not accessible for independent review, so that description should be understood as the search-result characterization, not a verified feature-by-feature assessment. - hEX also known as RB750Gr3 is a five port Gigabit Ethernet router for locations where wireless connectivity is not required
- The device has a full size USB port. This new updated revision of the hEX brings several improvements in performance
- It is affordable, small and easy to use, but at the same time comes with a very powerful dual core 880MHz CPU and 256MB RAM
- IPsec hardware encryption (~470 Mbps) and The Dude server package is supported, microSD slot on it provides improved r/w speed for file storage and Dude
- Dimensions: 113x89x28mm; Storage size: 16 MB; Passive PoE (PoE in); PCB temperature monitor, Voltage monitor and Mode button
The defensible takeaway is narrower: Plasma Firewall is a free KDE interface designed to simplify access to existing firewall backends. That may make it more convenient for some users, while firewalld’s dedicated GUI serves people who want to configure firewalld directly. Which feels better depends on the distribution, the available packages, and the level of control the user needs.
