Yes—ads may appear while viewers watch a monetized YouTube Live rerun, but YouTube does not promise an ad between every pair of gaming VODs. A VOD transition is not documented as a special ad trigger: ads depend on monetization, ad settings, eligibility and whether YouTube fills an ad slot. Different viewers may see different results.
What “between VODs” means on a live rerun
If a live stream plays prerecorded gaming videos in sequence, an ad can appear while someone watches the stream. YouTube documents pre-roll and mid-roll ads for monetized live streams, and it reports revenue separately for live streams and live replays. That makes replay viewing a monetization context, but it does not mean a particular viewer or replay will show an ad. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.

YouTube’s documentation does not identify a distinct rule that automatically inserts an ad between separate VODs in a rerun. Treat the transition as a possible moment for an ad only if YouTube serves one there—not as a guaranteed break. YouTube states: “Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads.”

Why one viewer may see an ad and another may not
Turning on monetization or enabling an ad setting makes ads possible; it does not guarantee that YouTube will serve an ad at every opportunity. YouTube’s live-ad guidance describes ad slots as opportunities, and says viewers may not all receive an ad. Monetization eligibility and ad serving also affect what happens. YouTube’s tips on how ads work during live streams explain the viewer-side variability.
#1 Best Overall
- 【1080P HD High Quality】Capture resolution up to 1080p for video source and it is ideal for all HDMI devices such as PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, DVDs, DSLR, Camera, Security Camera and set top box. Note: Video input supports 4K30/60Hz and 1080p120/144Hz. Does not support 4K120Hz/144Hz. Output supports up to 2K30Hz.
- 【Plug and Play】No driver or external power supply required, true PnP. Once plugged in, the device is identified automatically as a webcam. Detect input and adjust output automatically. Won't occupy CPU, optional audio capture. No freeze with correct setting.
- 【Compatible with Multiple Systems】suitable for Windows and Mac OS. High speed USB 3.0 technology and superior low latency technology makes it easier for you to transmit live streaming to Twitch, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, OBS, Potplayer and VLC.
- 【HDMI LOOP-OUT】Based on the high-speed USB 3.0 technology, it can capture one single channel HD HDMI video signal. There is no delay when you are playing game live.
- 【Support Mic-in for Commentary】Rybozen capture card has microphone input and you can use it to add external commentary when playing a game. Please note: it only accepts 3.5mm TRS standard microphone headset.
So an ad during a rerun does not prove that an ad is attached to the video transition itself. Conversely, seeing no ad at a transition does not show that the stream is unmonetized.
Live-stream ads and the replay’s own settings are separate considerations
During a live broadcast, YouTube supports pre-roll and mid-roll ads. Mid-rolls can be placed automatically or inserted manually; automatic placement seeks natural breakpoints. Once a broadcast is available as an uploaded video, its own settings may matter too: YouTube says monetized uploaded videos that are at least eight minutes long can have mid-roll ads. Do not assume that the replay archive inherits the live broadcast’s exact ad breaks. See YouTube’s guidance on mid-rolls in long videos.

If you control the live stream, YouTube offers automatic, scheduled and manual approaches. Its guidance recommends automatic placement. Scheduled breaks can be set at intervals of 6, 12, 18, 24 or 30 minutes; manual placement gives the creator control to insert breaks. YouTube warns that scheduled or manual choices may have lower earnings potential than automatic mode. These are control options, not a prediction of what a specific gaming rerun will earn.

YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels that turned on automatic live mid-roll ads, compared with channels that had not, averaged across 207 countries in January 2024. That is YouTube’s reported comparison, not a promise, a guaranteed causal result for an individual channel, or an estimate of earnings per VOD transition. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream monetization help.
