Cricket 17 is the heavier target in the listing: it asks for a 64-bit operating system, twice the minimum memory, and a substantially larger installation. Its recommended graphics and DirectX entries are also newer. Cricket 14 has a much older operating-system baseline, but an old operating system does not make it a practical choice on every modern PC; compatibility can still depend on drivers, display hardware and the store client.
How to check your Windows PC step by step
Windows includes a diagnostic utility that puts the relevant details in one place. Use it before downloading the game so you can identify a mismatch while you still have time to change your installation plan.
- Press Win+R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
dxdiagand press Enter. Approve the prompt if Windows asks whether it may verify digitally signed drivers. - On the System tab, record the operating-system name and architecture, processor model, installed memory and DirectX version. For Cricket 17, the operating system must be 64-bit; a 32-bit Windows installation does not meet that listed requirement.
- Open the Display or Display 1 tab. Record the graphics-device name and the display-memory figure. On some systems, Windows shows integrated graphics here; on a laptop with switchable graphics, check each display adapter listed.
- Open File Explorer, select the drive where you will install the game, and check the amount labelled Free space. Compare it with the storage row for your edition, leaving additional room for Windows updates, shader caches and save files rather than filling the drive to its limit.
- Write down the results and compare every row, not just the processor. A PC can have a fast CPU and still fail the graphics, operating-system or controller requirement.
dxdiag reports installed hardware and software; it does not benchmark the game. If a driver is missing or the device is disabled, the displayed information may be incomplete. In that case, open Settings > System > About for the Windows architecture and use Device Manager > Display adapters to confirm the graphics-device name.

Operating system and 64-bit support
Cricket 17’s listing specifically requires 64-bit Windows 7 or later. “Windows 7 or later” describes the minimum family shown by Steam; it does not mean every future Windows release is guaranteed to behave identically. Current Windows versions can run older software, but launcher, driver or copy-protection behavior can vary. If your System page says 32-bit, treat Cricket 17 as below the stated requirement even when the processor and graphics adapter appear adequate.
Cricket 14’s listing names Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8. Those are historical requirements, not a recommendation to keep an unsupported operating system connected to the internet. A modern, supported Windows installation is preferable for security. If Cricket 14 is being run on a newer edition, keep the installer and any compatibility options available, but verify the store’s current support behavior rather than assuming the old operating-system list is a guarantee.

Processor
Compare the full model number, not merely the words “Core,” “Athlon” or the clock speed. Laptop and desktop chips with similar names can have different generations and capabilities. Use the model shown in dxdiag or Windows System Information and compare it with the corresponding Intel or AMD entry in the table. A processor that is newer but marketed in a lower performance tier is not automatically equivalent; the Steam list is the safest eligibility test.
Memory (RAM)
Installed memory is different from free memory. Windows, browsers and recording tools consume RAM before the game starts. If your total is exactly the listed minimum, close unnecessary applications and avoid running several launchers at once. The recommended figure gives more headroom for the operating system and background programs, but it still does not establish a particular frame rate.

Graphics adapter and video memory
The graphics row names a GPU class and a minimum amount of video memory. Intel or AMD integrated graphics may appear as the only adapter even when a laptop has a second, discrete GPU; check all adapters and the game’s graphics preference in Windows. Having a GPU with more video memory does not by itself prove that it is faster than the listed model, because architecture and driver support also matter.
Do not confuse system RAM with video memory. The former appears on the System tab; the latter is reported on the Display tab. Both must be considered separately. If the adapter is not named in the Steam list, use its generation and performance as an informed comparison rather than claiming official support.
DirectX
The DirectX field in dxdiag shows the API components available to Windows. Cricket 14 lists DirectX 9.0c, while Cricket 17 lists DirectX 11 as minimum and DirectX 12 as recommended. A newer DirectX number in Windows does not automatically make an old graphics device compatible with every feature; the GPU must also support the required feature level and have a working driver.

Storage and internet
Check free space on the specific drive selected in the installer. Cricket 14’s listed footprint is 2 GB; Cricket 17’s is 11 GB. These are the store’s available-storage requirements, not a guarantee that the installation, updates and temporary files will occupy exactly that amount. Both listings call for broadband internet. The requirement may affect downloading, authentication or online features, so do not plan an installation that assumes a permanently offline first launch unless the store explicitly documents that mode.

Controller support: can you play with a keyboard?
No. Both Steam listings include a controller requirement, and Cricket 17 states it in the exact wording “Controller Required.” That means a keyboard-only setup should not be treated as a supported configuration. A Windows-compatible USB PC game controller is the straightforward purchase if you do not already own one.
Connect the controller before launching the game, then verify that Windows sees it:
- Press Win+R, enter
joy.cpl, and press Enter. - Select the controller and choose Properties to test its buttons and sticks.
- In Steam, open Settings > Controller and confirm that the relevant input support is enabled for the controller type you use.
- Start the game and review its own control settings. If no input is detected, close other remapping utilities, reconnect the controller directly to the PC and try a different USB port.
These checks confirm that Windows receives input; they do not promise that every third-party pad has identical button labels. Keep the game’s control diagram or configuration screen available when mapping unfamiliar hardware.
Minimum versus recommended: what a pass really tells you
A pass against every minimum row means your PC matches the publisher’s stated entry point for that edition. It does not establish a frame rate, resolution, graphics preset or absence of stutter. Steam does not publish those targets in the cited listings. A system near minimum can therefore launch successfully while requiring conservative in-game settings, whereas a system around the recommended rows has more hardware headroom but still depends on drivers, background load and display configuration.

Use the result as a purchase decision rather than a performance guarantee:
- All minimum rows pass: The edition is eligible on paper. Install with the controller attached and keep enough free storage for updates.
- Recommended rows pass: You have the stronger configuration Steam lists, but choose settings gradually and check actual play in a match rather than assuming a preset.
- One or more minimum rows fail: Do not buy on the assumption that another component will compensate. Identify whether the failure is a replaceable driver, storage shortage, unsupported operating-system architecture or genuinely older hardware.
Cricket 14 or Cricket 17: which requirement set applies?
The editions are not interchangeable. Use the following decision path instead of selecting whichever table looks easier:
- Read the year in your store library or product page.
- If it says 17, apply the Cricket 17 column, including its 64-bit Windows and controller conditions.
- If it says 14, apply the Cricket 14 column, including its older DirectX and storage entries.
- If it says “Jr,” has no year, or comes from an unidentified installer, stop and verify the publisher, executable and store listing before using either set of numbers.
The comparison table shows why the distinction matters: Cricket 17 raises the minimum RAM from Cricket 14’s level, expands the storage requirement from 2 GB to 11 GB, and moves from DirectX 9.0c to DirectX 11. Its operating-system requirement is also explicitly 64-bit. Those differences are large enough that a PC suitable for Cricket 14 should not be assumed to qualify for Cricket 17.
What to do when your PC does not pass
Not enough free disk space
Remove or move personal files, uninstall unused applications, or select another internal drive with sufficient capacity. Do not delete Windows folders or game files blindly. Recheck free space after the installer reserves files; an update can require temporary room beyond the original listing.
Wrong Windows architecture or version
Open Settings > System > About and read System type. A 32-bit installation cannot be converted to 64-bit with a switch; it normally requires backing up personal data and performing a clean installation of 64-bit Windows, with compatible drivers and installation media. For an old operating-system edition, weigh the security and driver consequences before attempting to run legacy software.

Graphics adapter below the listed class
Install the correct driver from the computer or GPU manufacturer, restart, and confirm the adapter again in dxdiag. If the hardware itself is below the minimum class, lowering resolution may reduce load but cannot turn an unsupported adapter into an officially qualifying one. On a laptop, set the game to use the discrete adapter through Windows graphics settings if the machine has one, while keeping realistic expectations about thermal throttling.
Controller not detected
Test the device in joy.cpl, connect it directly rather than through an unpowered hub, and disable conflicting remapping programs. If Windows cannot see the controller, the game cannot use it; repair that connection first. If Windows sees it but the game does not, check Steam’s controller settings and the game’s input menu before reinstalling.
Launch or DirectX errors after passing the table
Restart after driver or Windows updates, verify the game files through Steam’s installed-game properties, and close overlays or capture tools temporarily. Record the exact error text. A launch error after every listed requirement passes can indicate an old dependency, permissions issue or driver conflict rather than insufficient RAM or storage; the error message and the edition’s support page are more useful than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
