Can You Use Water on a Lithium-Ion Battery Fire?

Do not approach a lithium-ion battery fire to use water. Evacuate and call emergency services; water use by firefighters depends on the battery and response plan.

If you’re near a lithium-ion battery fire, don’t try to put it out with water—or any extinguisher. Move away, evacuate the area, and call emergency services. In the United States, call 911; elsewhere, use your local emergency number. Firefighters may use water to cool a battery or protect nearby equipment, but that is a planned, product-specific response—not a reason for the public to approach the fire.

Why the answer depends on who is using the water

Public safety advice and firefighter guidance address different decisions. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) tells the public: “If a lithium-ion battery fire occurs, don’t try to put it out. Evacuate and call 911 immediately.” USFA public battery-safety guidance is direct because approaching a burning or damaged battery can put you in danger.

Responders may use water to remove heat from a battery or protect nearby exposures. That does not mean water will reach the cells or stop the reaction inside a particular enclosure. The right tactic depends on the battery system, its construction, fire conditions, and the manufacturer’s emergency procedures.

What different official guides say about water

These instructions are not interchangeable. They address different equipment and audiences:

FLASLD Fireproof Lithium Battery Cover 40×40 inch, Fastest & Simplest Way to Isolate and Extinguish Small Fires, Fire Blanket for E-Scooter and E-Bike Grey
  • Risk reduction: Fireproof doesn't mean it can be endlessly exposed to fire and resist spontaneous battery combustion, we designed this product originally to reduce the risk of fire and stop the spread of fire, it is recommended that our products are stored in an open area with no flammable materials around to ensure maximum safety.
  • Fire prevention: Coated special fabric | For covering or wrapping batteries or battery-powered devices | Retains heat, flames and smoke | Caution in case of fire - gases are toxic.
  • Protection: The fireproof cover delays the spread of heat and fire in the event of a fire | It immediately reduces smoke development | Battery fires are limited and conventional fires are smothered by oxygen deprivation.
  • Compact and light: The fireproof blanket is easy to handle and can be stored easily. This makes it ideal for use at home, in the office or when travelling to enable a quick response to potential fire hazards.
  • Do you know the potential dangers of lipo batteries? Once the battery is shorted, it will instantly generate high temperature and spontaneously ignite, which brings danger to you and your family. We designed this cover to minimize that risk, even though it can't withstand the heat and flames naturally generated by batteries for long time. But it will at least give you time to react to a spontaneous battery combustion.
Source and system What the guidance says about water What it means for readers
USFA public guidance Do not try to put out a lithium-ion battery fire; evacuate and call 911. For the public, the action is to get away and call for help, not to apply water.
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service operational extract Direct water on the affected pack may not stop thermal runaway behind steel layers; responders should attempt cooling with large quantities of water. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, April 2026 response Cooling the pack and stopping the internal cell reaction are not necessarily the same thing.
Tesla Energy Products, responder guide Calls water the preferred agent for managing lithium-ion battery fires, while warning that direct application to an affected enclosure will not stop thermal runaway. It also describes water use to protect nearby enclosures or exposures. Tesla Lithium-Ion Battery Emergency Response Guide, Revision 2.4 This is responder guidance for Tesla Energy Products, not a household instruction or universal battery rule.
VinFast VF8, responder guide Says flooding that vehicle’s battery with water can extinguish it and directs responders to monitor and quarantine the vehicle afterward. VinFast VF8 Emergency Response Guide, January 9, 2023 This procedure is specific to the VF8; it should not be assumed to apply to other electric vehicles.

So, “water can be used” and “water may not stop thermal runaway” can both be true. Responders may use it for cooling or exposure protection, while a particular enclosure prevents water from reaching cells directly. Other product-specific procedures may call for flooding a battery. Follow the relevant emergency response guide and incident command, not a rule inferred from a different battery.

What to do if a battery is burning or showing warning signs

Cracking, bulging, popping or hissing, visible gas venting, or a rising temperature can indicate a damaged battery or thermal runaway. If you notice these signs, do not handle or approach the battery to investigate or cool it.

  1. Move away from the battery and leave the building or danger area if it is safe to do so.
  2. Warn others nearby to keep clear; do not return to retrieve the device or belongings.
  3. Call emergency services. In the U.S., call 911; elsewhere, use your local emergency number. Follow dispatcher and responder instructions.

Why a battery can be dangerous after the flames stop

Visible flames going out do not prove that the battery is safe. A lithium-ion battery can reignite, so assessment, monitoring, isolation, and any transport or quarantine decisions should be handled by responders using guidance for that device or vehicle.

For Tesla Energy Products, the 2022 responder guide gives product-specific minimum defensive distances of at least 5 m for Powerwall, 10 m for Powerpack, and 20 m for Megapack fires, and warns that conditions may require greater distances. It also says a battery fire may continue for several hours; after thermal runaway has consumed a pack, cooling may take 24 hours or longer. Its guidance describes using thermal imaging after visible fire and smoke have subsided for at least 12 hours to assess the unit. These figures apply to Tesla’s products and guide, not to other batteries or as distances for the public to use instead of evacuating.

Can water put out an electric-car battery fire?

There is no single answer that applies to every electric vehicle. The VinFast VF8 guide describes flooding its battery with water as a way responders can extinguish it, while other systems may be difficult to cool directly because cells are enclosed. Firefighters use the vehicle’s emergency response information and scene conditions to determine their approach. For drivers and bystanders, the advice is unchanged: do not attempt suppression; get away and call emergency services.
