1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYes. A Windows PC can connect controllers from different brands at the same time; they do not need to match. Whether both work in the same game depends on that game’s controller support and how it handles each device’s input. Windows 11 supports common USB and Bluetooth connections for compatible Xbox, PlayStation, and third-party controllers, but a successful connection does not guarantee two-player support in every game.
Why two connected controllers may not both work in a game
Windows and games communicate with controllers using input interfaces and drivers. XInput and DirectInput are two different interfaces; a game may support one, the other, or both. Microsoft notes that developers can use DirectInput and XInput side by side to support legacy devices. As a result, Windows may see both controllers while a particular game recognizes only one, handles them differently, or needs a translation layer.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance says some games may need Steam Input or DS4Windows for full PlayStation controller compatibility, although basic functionality usually works without them. Results vary by game, controller model, driver, connection method, and software version.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

- Connect each controller. Use a connection method supported by that controller, such as USB or Bluetooth. Microsoft’s Windows 11 controller connection guidance covers compatible Xbox, PlayStation, and third-party controllers.
- Check that Windows sees both devices. A connection to the PC confirms only that the system can detect the controllers; it does not establish that a particular game supports both.
- Check the game’s controller and player settings. Look for local multiplayer support and any settings for selecting or assigning controllers. The game determines whether two players can use the devices.
- If the game is on Steam, try its controller settings. Valve’s Steam Input documentation describes support for Xbox, PlayStation, and DirectInput gamepads. If one controller is not recognized or has unexpected mappings, Steam Input may help.
- For games outside Steam—or if the issue remains—check the game’s own documentation. Look for supported controllers and input APIs. A translation layer may help in some cases, but it cannot be assumed to fix every game.
What XInput, DirectInput, and Steam Input mean for mixed controllers
XInput and DirectInput are input interfaces, not requirements that every controller have the same brand. Their importance is whether the game can interpret the input each device provides. Microsoft’s XInput documentation says applications using XInput can communicate with up to four unique controllers plugged into a Windows PC. This is an API-specific limit, not a guarantee that every game supports four players or every combination of devices.

Steam Input can translate controller input for some games. Valve’s gamepad emulation guidance explains that Steam can inject an emulated Xbox controller through traditional Windows input APIs. Consequently, an on-screen prompt may show Xbox-style buttons even when the physical controller is a different brand; the prompt can reflect the emulated layout rather than the device in your hands.

What to compare when troubleshooting
- Connection: Is each controller connected using a method it supports, such as USB or Bluetooth?
- Input support: Can the game handle the interface presented by each controller, or does it rely on a translation setting?
- Game and launcher: Does the game support local multiplayer and both devices? If it runs through Steam, do its controller settings change recognition or mappings?
- Prompts and mapping: Do the controls work despite unfamiliar button prompts, or are the actual inputs mapped incorrectly?
