You can’t use an onscreen keyboard on Apple Watch SE: Apple says it isn’t available on Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch SE 3, or Apple Watch Series 6. Instead, enter text with dictation or Scribble when available, or continue typing on the nearby paired iPhone using its Apple Watch Keyboard Input notification. Apple’s text-entry guide also notes that input options vary by language.
Why the keyboard is missing on Apple Watch SE
The onscreen keyboard is not a setting you can turn on for Apple Watch SE. Apple identifies the original SE and Series 6 as models without it in its text-entry guide. A separate watchOS 27 guide also says the keyboard is unavailable on Apple Watch SE 3. These model-specific statements do not establish support for every future Apple Watch model.

Which alternatives appear depends in part on the language in use. If an option described below is missing, check that language’s availability and your watch model rather than looking for a keyboard-enable switch.
Enter text with dictation
- Open the app or screen where you need to enter text and tap its text field.
- Tap the input-method control, then choose dictation if it is offered.
- Speak your message. Apple says you can speak punctuation and emoji as part of dictation.
Dictation is not available in every language. Apple’s guide to entering text describes it as one of the watch’s text-entry methods.

Write with Scribble
- Tap the text field in the app or screen where you want to write.
- Use the input-method control to choose Scribble, if it is available for your language.
- Draw letters, numbers, or punctuation on the screen with your finger.
- Use the Digital Crown to move through suggested words or reposition the cursor, as needed.
Scribble availability varies by language, so it may not appear in every setup.
Continue typing on your paired iPhone
- Keep the paired iPhone nearby and start entering text on the watch.
- When the Apple Watch Keyboard Input notification appears on the iPhone, tap it.
- Continue entering the text on the iPhone.
Apple documents this handoff as an option when the iPhone is nearby. It lets you use the phone’s keyboard instead of trying to enable an onscreen keyboard on the watch.

Reply to email on Apple Watch SE
For Mail replies, Apple lists dictation, Scribble, emoji, prepared responses, and switching to iPhone as available approaches. The onscreen and QuickPath keyboards apply only to supported models and languages, as described in Apple’s Mail guide. On Apple Watch SE, use one of the other offered methods or continue on the iPhone.

- Scribble: Lets you draw text with a finger when the option is offered for your language.
- Paired iPhone: Lets you type on the phone when it is nearby and the Keyboard Input notification appears.
