Can You Use the Internet on a Plane? Wi-Fi, Airplane Mode and U.S. Rules Explained

U.S. flights restrict airborne cellular service, not all internet access. Learn when aircraft Wi-Fi may work, why airplane mode can allow it and why calls are a separate issue.

Internet access is not categorically banned on passenger flights in the United States. The key distinction is between connecting directly to ground-based cellular networks—which is restricted in flight—and using Wi-Fi provided by the aircraft, which an airline may offer under its own rules. Keep cellular service disabled, follow crew instructions, and check your carrier’s flight-specific information to learn whether onboard Wi-Fi is available.

Why does it seem like internet is not allowed in flight?

“Internet” can mean different connection methods. A phone’s cellular connection reaches ground-based mobile networks; onboard Wi-Fi connects to a wireless network provided by the aircraft. U.S. restrictions on airborne cellular service do not amount to a blanket ban on all internet access.

The distinction matters because the concerns and rules are different. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) explains that its airborne cellular restriction was intended to guard against potential harmful interference to terrestrial cellular networks. Separately, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidance addresses the potential for portable electronic devices to interfere with aircraft navigation or communication systems. These are separate concerns, not one general prohibition on using the internet. FCC Order FCC 13-157; FAA Advisory Circular 91.21-1D.

What is the difference between cellular service and airplane Wi-Fi?

Connection How it works What to expect in flight
Cellular service Your device connects to terrestrial cellular networks. The FCC’s airborne restriction addresses use of specified cellular service. Keep cellular service disabled in flight as directed by the airline and crew. FCC Order FCC 13-157.
Aircraft-provided Wi-Fi Your device connects to a wireless network offered by the aircraft. The FAA says passengers may connect to the aircraft’s wireless network when the airline provides it, while cellular service remains disabled. Availability and conditions depend on the carrier and flight. FAA Portable Electronic Devices guidance.

Wi-Fi availability is not guaranteed on every aircraft or route, and permission to connect may depend on the carrier’s instructions and the flight’s circumstances. The information here does not establish availability, price, speed, or coverage for a particular itinerary. Check the airline’s current flight-specific details.

Why can I use Wi-Fi if airplane mode is on?

Airplane mode disables a device’s cellular connection; it does not necessarily prevent Wi-Fi use for the entire flight. If the airline provides onboard Wi-Fi and permits its use, you can keep cellular service disabled and connect to the aircraft’s wireless network. The FAA describes this arrangement in its passenger guidance. Follow crew instructions and the carrier’s rules, including any directions about when to connect. FAA Portable Electronic Devices guidance.

Does onboard Wi-Fi mean voice calls are allowed?

No. Internet access and voice calling are separate questions. Under 49 U.S.C. § 41725, the U.S. Department of Transportation is directed to prohibit passengers on covered scheduled interstate and intrastate flights from engaging in voice communications using mobile communications devices during flight, subject to specified exceptions for certain on-duty personnel. Do not assume a Wi-Fi connection authorizes a passenger voice call.

Is the 5G and radio-altimeter issue why passenger internet is restricted?

No. The 5G C-band issue concerns possible interaction between terrestrial wireless operations and aircraft radio altimeters; it is not a ban on passenger internet or onboard Wi-Fi. The FAA says mitigations and radio-altimeter retrofits have enabled 5G C-band coexistence, with impacts minimized to levels acceptable to both industries through at least January 1, 2028. FAA: 5G and Aviation Safety.

What should you do before connecting on a flight?

  1. Check the airline’s information for your specific flight. Availability and terms can vary by carrier, route, aircraft, and travel date.
  2. Keep cellular service disabled. Use airplane mode as directed by the airline and crew.
  3. Connect only if the airline offers onboard Wi-Fi and permits use. Follow the crew’s instructions about when and how to connect.
  4. Do not treat Wi-Fi as permission to make voice calls. U.S. rules for covered scheduled flights address passenger voice communications separately.

The regulatory discussion above is specific to the United States; FAA and FCC rules should not be assumed to govern flights in every country.
