In Word for Mac, choose File > Save As, select PDF under File Format, then choose Export. Give the PDF a different filename from the Word document so you keep an editable copy. Convert a Word document to PDF in Word for Mac

Open the document in Word. If you have not already saved the editable file, save it first.

Choose File > Save As.

In the save dialog, enter a filename for the PDF. Use a different name from the original Word file so the editable document remains available.

Open File Format, choose PDF, then select Export.

Find the exported PDF in the chosen destination and open it to check the result.

Use the Mac Print dialog if Word’s PDF export is unavailable
The macOS Print dialog can create a PDF from a document that the app can print. In Word, choose File > Print, then select the PDF button or menu in the print dialog and choose Save as PDF. Set the filename and destination when prompted. Apple’s Mac guide also documents optional PDF security settings that can require a password to open, copy from, or print the file.
This is a general macOS printing route rather than Word’s PDF export. Use Word’s export controls when you need its Word-specific output options; whichever route you choose, inspect the resulting PDF.

Check the PDF before sharing it
Open the exported file and compare it with the Word document. Pay particular attention to page breaks, headings, images, tables, hyperlinks, and the final page count. This is especially useful for documents with custom fonts or complex layouts.

Microsoft notes that Word for Mac’s Best for printing option can have a known hyperlink issue. In its Online Service conversion workflow, fonts may be substituted if Microsoft does not have the rights to use them. Those caveats concern particular conversion paths, so check the PDF you actually created rather than assuming every export will have the same issue. Microsoft’s Office PDF guidance

Consider tagged PDF output for accessibility
Tagged PDFs can help screen readers and other assistive technologies identify logical reading order and navigation. Microsoft also says tagged PDFs support reflow on large-type displays and mobile devices. Accessibility needs vary, so check the exported file with the tools and assistive technology relevant to its readers. Microsoft’s Word for Mac PDF guidance
