Usually, no: laptop RAM is generally a short SO-DIMM, while a conventional desktop motherboard usually takes a full-size DIMM, often a UDIMM. They are not direct physical substitutes. Some compact desktops do use SO-DIMMs, however, so check the exact computer or motherboard specifications before buying memory.
Why laptop RAM usually does not fit a desktop
Most laptops use small-outline dual in-line memory modules (SO-DIMMs). Conventional desktop boards commonly use full-size DIMMs, often unbuffered DIMMs (UDIMMs). The modules differ in physical form and socket, so a laptop module ordinarily cannot be installed directly in a standard desktop memory slot. Samsung outlines the memory module types and form factors in its DDR overview.

When a desktop can use SO-DIMM memory
“Desktop” describes a broad range of computers, not a guaranteed memory socket. Some compact desktop PCs and mini PCs are designed for SO-DIMMs. For example, ASUS specifies “Two 260-pin 1.2 V DDR4 SDRAM small outline dual in-line memory module (SO-DIMM) sockets” for the NUC 13 Pro Desk Edition. That specification applies to that model; it does not establish compatibility with other desktops. Check the exact system documentation, such as ASUS’s NUC 13 Pro Desk Edition memory specification.

SO-DIMM-to-DIMM adapters are sold, including a listing for a DDR5 SO-DIMM to U-DIMM adapter. A product listing establishes that an adapter is available; it does not show that every laptop module and desktop motherboard combination will work. An adapter also adds physical height and another compatibility factor.

Before using one, confirm that the adapter matches the RAM generation and that the motherboard supports the resulting module and its characteristics. Check capacity and speed limits, module specifications, and clearance inside the case. Physical fit alone is not proof of electrical or platform compatibility. For most ordinary desktop upgrades, buying the memory form factor specified by the motherboard is the more straightforward option.
How to check your PC’s RAM compatibility
- Identify the exact model. Find the desktop or compact PC model, or the motherboard model if the system was built from separate parts.
- Check the socket and memory type. Look for DIMM or SO-DIMM and the supported DDR generation. Do not assume that a module fits because it is described as “desktop” or “laptop” memory.
- Confirm capacity and speed limits. Check the system or motherboard documentation for supported module types, maximum capacity, and speeds before choosing a kit.
- Use a compatibility lookup if helpful. Enter the exact system or motherboard model in a vendor tool such as Kingston’s desktop and laptop memory lookup, and confirm important limits against the manufacturer’s documentation.
MSI likewise advises checking the desktop model and supported memory modules before upgrading; see its RAM upgrade precautions for MSI desktops.

If installed memory is not recognized
First confirm that the memory type is supported by the computer. If it is, Kingston’s troubleshooting guidance recommends reseating the modules and consulting the motherboard manual for the correct slots. Follow the instructions for the specific system when handling or reinstalling memory; see Kingston’s desktop and notebook memory support guidance.
