How to Compare Phone Battery Life Using Standardized Battery Tests

A phone battery-life figure is meaningful only alongside its test conditions. Learn what to check before comparing runtimes.

Compare phone battery life only when the test workload and its controls match. A runtime figure is an estimate for a defined scenario—not a promise of how long every owner’s phone will last. Check what the test makes the phone do, how brightly the screen is set, the network and environment, background activity, refresh rate, and the start and end charge levels.

What does a phone battery test measure?

A runtime test measures how long a phone runs a specified workload before reaching the test’s end condition. The European Commission’s smartphone ecodesign material defines endurance per cycle as the time a smartphone runs a defined scenario from full charge until it shuts off automatically because the battery is drained. That is distinct from cycle life: how capacity changes after repeated charging and discharging. Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/1670 discusses endurance per cycle and cycle life as separate measures.

Do not assume that every standardized battery test is a complete script for ordinary smartphone use. IEC 61960-3:2017 sets performance tests and requirements for portable lithium secondary cells and batteries; it is not, by itself, a smartphone runtime protocol covering everyday activities.

How do I compare phone battery life fairly?

Before ranking two results, compare the test conditions below. If important details differ or are missing, treat the figures as contextual clues rather than a clean head-to-head result.

Match the workload

Check whether each test measures calls, web browsing, video playback or streaming, gaming, standby, or a weighted combination. These activities place different demands on a phone, so a result from one scenario does not automatically predict another.

For example, GSMArena Battery Life Test 2.0 includes calls, web browsing, video streaming, and gaming, then combines them into an adjustable Active Use Score weighted slightly toward web and video. That score omits standby. GSMArena says its new and old ratings are incomparable because the new score assumes only active use. A standby-inclusive figure answers a different question from an active-use-only score.

Compare actual screen brightness

Screen brightness can materially affect runtime. Compare luminance in nits or cd/m², not the brightness-slider percentage: the same percentage can produce different screen output on different phones. GSMArena uses 200 nits for its screen-on tests; UL Benchmarks recommends a 200 cd/m² target for controlled smartphone and tablet comparisons. These are method settings, not typical battery-life outcomes.

VTECHOLOGY 2Pcs Battery Tester for AA AAA C D 9V 1.5V Household Batteries
  • MULTI PURPOSE USE- can be used to test different type of household batteries like AA, AAA, C, D, 1.5V,9V and 1.5V button type
  • REQUIRE NO BATTERY- activated by the battery being checked, no battery needed for operation
  • SIMPLE BUT EFFECTIVE- compact size and lightweight, portable effective battery tester, a must buy for anyone who uses regular or rechargeable batteries on a regular basis
  • EASY TO USE- identify battery status simply by the analog display needle, "good" (green), "low" (yellow), and "replace/recharge" (red)
  • NOTE : 1. You can simply test battery voltage to determine whether the capacity of the battery is low or high. It won't directly detect the battery capacity precisely 2. Don't forget: The Battery Tester is activated by the battery being checked. Keep test times as short as possible to avoid unnecessary battery drain.

Check the environment and radio setup

Temperature, ambient light, humidity, network quality, and radio settings can affect results. UL Benchmarks cites ECMA-383 conditions of 23 ± 5 °C, 10–80% relative humidity, and 250 ± 50 lux, and advises controlled conditions and consistent device setup. This is practical benchmark guidance, not a legal requirement for consumer phone reviews.

Protocols may use different radio setups. GSMArena describes airplane mode with Wi-Fi connected and Bluetooth off for its screen-on tests. Its call test uses a 4G network with VoLTE and aims for consistent network quality and call volume. Compare results within the same method where possible; do not assume unlike setups are interchangeable.

Check background activity and software

Background apps and notifications can add work that drains the battery. UL advises closing background apps and disabling notifications for controlled tests. If one protocol suppresses background activity and another allows it, they are measuring different workloads.

  • Life Helper: Battery checker tester expect a result almost instantly. It accurately tests the condition of batteries, and lets you know if they need to be replaced.
  • Note: Please place the battery tester in a dry place at room temperature, and remove the battery when the test is not needed.

Look at refresh rate and interaction

Refresh-rate settings change what a test represents. GSMArena leaves browsing at each phone’s default Auto or High setting, preferring variable refresh where available, but fixes gaming at 60 Hz for consistency. Someone who games at higher frame rates may get less runtime than that gaming test suggests.

Confirm the charge range and stopping point

Check where the test starts and ends. GSMArena describes measuring from 100% to 0%. UL’s PCMark procedure starts at 80% or more and loops until the charge falls below 20%. Because these protocols cover different charge ranges and have different endpoints, their reported runtimes are not directly equivalent.

What do common test settings tell you?

The figures below describe methods, not population-wide statistics about how long phones last.

How should you use published results?

Use a test result to compare phones tested under the same method, then ask whether that method resembles your own use. A web-and-video-weighted active-use score may be informative for someone who spends much of the day browsing and streaming; it says less about overnight standby or sustained high-refresh gaming.

Even a carefully controlled result is scenario-specific. GSMArena notes that actual runtimes vary with network environment, background processes, ambient temperature, and available ambient light. Fixed conditions improve repeatability, but no single workload represents every owner’s day.

How can you run a controlled comparison yourself?

For a useful home comparison, keep the conditions identical across phones. UL recommends a measured screen luminance target and describes using a luminance meter in its expert process; the instrument is optional if you are simply comparing published reviews.

  1. Choose one workload. Decide whether you are comparing calls, browsing, video, gaming, or another repeatable activity, and use the same apps, content, and duration pattern on each phone.
  2. Set up the phones consistently. Use the same network and radio configuration, control background apps and notifications, and keep software and workload settings as similar as practical.
  3. Control display output. Disable automatic brightness and set both displays to the same measured luminance target rather than matching slider percentages.
  4. Hold the environment steady. Test the devices in the same place and conditions, and note temperature and other relevant setup details.
  5. Use the same charge endpoints. Begin and stop each run at the same charge levels and record the endpoint, workload, and settings with the elapsed time.

Professional reviewers may automate test sequences: GSMArena says it uses SmartViser to automate its editorial testing protocols. Automation can improve consistency, but the existence of that professional workflow does not make a consumer tool necessary.

Why results from different sources may disagree

  • Different workloads: a call test, video loop, and mixed active-use score are not interchangeable.
  • Different display output: matching a slider percentage does not ensure matching luminance.
  • Different controls: network conditions, background activity, refresh behavior, and environment affect what the test measures.
  • Different endpoints: a full-charge-to-shutdown run cannot be compared as if it covered the same interval as a partial-charge benchmark.
  • Different metric definitions: runtime per charge cycle is not the same measure as long-term capacity retention after many cycles.

GSMA’s terminal-testing page points to TS.09 battery-life measurement files, but the linked file contents are not established here; it should not be treated as evidence for specific protocol details. GSMA Terminal Testing.
