For ordinary, general-purpose GTA V mods, PC is the relevant platform. Rockstar’s current support index has a specific policy route for PC single-player (Story Mode) modifications and points players to its formal Mod Guidelines, Terms of Service and Creator Platform License Agreement. It does not describe an equivalent, supported console modding route.
That does not prove that every console workaround is technically impossible. It does mean console players should not expect the broad, supported mod ecosystem available to PC Story Mode players. More importantly, Story Mode and GTA Online are governed differently: taking mods, mod menus or exploits into GTA Online can lead to account suspension or a ban.

What “PC-only” means in practice
When people ask whether GTA V mods are “PC-only,” they usually mean whether they can install the same kinds of user-made changes that PC players use in Story Mode: altered vehicles, graphics, maps, scripts, character models or gameplay systems. Rockstar’s published guidance is explicitly centered on PC single-player/Story Mode. Its support index, updated September 15, 2026, directs PC players to the operative Mod Guidelines and related legal documents.
There is no corresponding Rockstar support pathway that explains how to install ordinary Story Mode mods on PlayStation or Xbox consoles. Therefore, the practical answer is:

- Choose PC if access to the general-purpose GTA V Story Mode mod ecosystem is your priority.
- Do not assume a console workaround is supported simply because a video or forum post shows one working.
- Keep every modification out of GTA Online. Rockstar treats online modding and related interference as an enforcement issue, not as an extension of Story Mode customization.
This is a platform-and-policy distinction, not a claim that every mod works on every PC edition or that every console method fails in exactly the same way.

The table does not establish that every unofficial console modification is detected, impossible or punished identically. It records what Rockstar documents and supports.
Why Story Mode and GTA Online must be treated separately
Story Mode is the setting addressed by Rockstar’s mod guidance
Rockstar’s current PC support material discusses single-player or Story Mode modifications. It sends readers to the current Mod Guidelines, Terms of Service and Creator Platform License Agreement instead of presenting a blanket approval for anything described as a “mod.” Those documents are the controlling references for what is permitted and how Rockstar defines unacceptable conduct.

For a PC owner, the safe conceptual boundary is simple: launch and use modifications only in an offline Story Mode context that is covered by the applicable guidance. Keep a clean, unmodified installation available for other uses, and do not treat a visual or gameplay change as harmless merely because it was downloaded from a popular community.
GTA Online is a separate risk category
Rockstar’s account-enforcement guidance, updated May 20, 2024, says that modding online games, exploiting online mechanics, manipulating protected code or interfering with other players may result in an account suspension or ban. That warning applies to the conduct, not just to a particular brand of mod menu.

Consequences can affect access to online features and the account itself. A modification that appears to work in Story Mode can still be prohibited when it is carried into a networked session. Do not test a Story Mode mod by joining GTA Online, and do not assume that removing a visible menu removes every altered file or process.
What BattlEye does—and does not—mean
Rockstar’s BattlEye FAQ, updated June 17, 2025, explains that BattlEye protects GTA Online on PC and describes a way to disable it for Story Mode. That setting exists to accommodate offline play; it is not permission to use mods in GTA Online.

BattlEye’s operating state and Rockstar’s account policy answer different questions:
- BattlEye setting: whether the anti-cheat component is active for the mode you are launching.
- Rockstar policy: whether your conduct is allowed and whether it can trigger account action.
Use any BattlEye option only as Rockstar describes it for Story Mode. Never use the setting as a workaround for online cheating or as evidence that an online session is safe.
What Rockstar’s console-support statement actually establishes
Rockstar’s support article on console peripherals, updated February 3, 2024, says Rockstar Support does not support hardware or software unless it is officially licensed and authorized by the console manufacturer. This is the clearest basis for describing console modification workarounds as unsupported by Rockstar Support.

That wording has important limits. It does not prove that every proposed console modification method works, that none can be detected, or that every method carries the same account consequence. It also does not turn an unofficial method into an approved feature. If a workaround requires altered console software, unauthorized hardware or a service outside the console maker’s approval, you should expect no normal Rockstar troubleshooting path when the game stops working.

Step 1: identify the experience you want to change
Write down whether your goal is a private Story Mode change or an advantage in a shared online world. General-purpose mods belong to the first category. If the goal involves extra money, altered abilities, protected code, automated actions or advantages over other players, it is not a safe Story Mode-versus-Online misunderstanding; it is online-risk territory.
Step 2: treat PC as the supported subject, not as a universal guarantee
Rockstar’s PC policy route makes PC the sensible platform for readers who specifically want mods. It does not promise compatibility for a particular mod, mod manager, storefront edition or graphics configuration. Those details can vary, so check the current Rockstar guidance and the individual creator’s documentation before changing files.
Step 3: keep modded and online use physically separate
Use a dedicated Story Mode setup for modifications and preserve a clean setup for any activity that could connect to GTA Online. Do not rely only on memory to remove files before an online session. If you cannot clearly verify that the game is unmodified and that no unauthorized tool is running, do not enter an online session.
Step 4: read the current rules before installing anything
Rockstar’s PC Story Mode support index was updated September 15, 2026, and points to the current formal guidelines. Read those documents at the time you install a mod because the operative language, supported features and enforcement context can change. A community post, old tutorial or a creator’s “safe” label cannot replace Rockstar’s terms.

Step 5: plan for recovery
Before altering a PC installation, keep backups of unmodified files and know how to restore or verify the game through the store or launcher you use. The published material does not establish a universal recovery procedure for every edition, so follow the instructions for your specific installation rather than assuming a console-style reinstall or a one-click toggle will undo every change.

“A console video proves consoles officially support mods.”
A demonstration proves only that a particular setup was shown to run at a particular time. Rockstar’s published support route is for PC Story Mode, and its console-support statement excludes unauthorized hardware or software from normal Rockstar Support. Treat an unofficial demonstration as unsupported, with no guarantee of durability, safety or account outcome.
“A Story Mode mod is automatically allowed everywhere.”
Rockstar’s guidance is mode-specific and points to formal terms. A modification intended for single-player does not become acceptable in GTA Online merely because its purpose is cosmetic or because it does not obviously affect another player.
“Disabling BattlEye grants permission.”
It does not. Rockstar describes BattlEye as protecting GTA Online and describes disabling it for Story Mode. The separate account policy still warns against online modding, exploits and interference.
“If Rockstar Support cannot detect a workaround, it must be safe.”
Detection is not the standard stated in the support material. The relevant questions are whether the software or hardware is authorized, whether the activity is covered by the applicable guidelines and whether it affects an online service or other players.

“Buying GTA V on a console gives me access to PC mods.”
A console copy and a PC installation are different platform environments. Rockstar’s PC-specific support and purchase material does not establish that a console license includes a PC copy, a transferable entitlement or any particular edition. Confirm the platform and edition before purchasing if mods are the deciding factor.
What is and is not established about penalties
Rockstar expressly warns that online modding, exploits, protected-code manipulation and interference with other players may result in account suspension or a ban. That is the supported conclusion. The available guidance does not provide a penalty table for every type of console workaround, a detection rate, or a claim that all unofficial modifications receive identical treatment.
Accordingly, avoid promises such as “this method is undetectable,” “you cannot be banned,” or “every mod causes an immediate ban.” The only responsible advice is to keep modifications out of GTA Online and to regard unauthorized console changes as outside Rockstar Support.

- Choose PC when Story Mode customization is the main reason for buying or replaying GTA V.
- Stay on console when you value the standard supported console experience and do not need general-purpose mods.
- Separate modes: treat Story Mode and GTA Online as different operating environments.
- Check the date: use the current Rockstar guidelines rather than an old tutorial.
- Protect the account: never join GTA Online with a modded, altered or uncertain installation.
- Expect limited support: unauthorized console hardware or software is outside Rockstar Support’s stated coverage.
The bottom line for console players
If mods are the deciding feature, PC is the platform to consider because Rockstar publishes a specific Story Mode mod-policy route for it. Consoles do not have a comparable Rockstar-documented path for ordinary user-installed GTA V mods, and unofficial console modifications are not covered by Rockstar Support when they rely on hardware or software lacking the console manufacturer’s authorization.
Whichever platform you use, keep modifications confined to the context Rockstar addresses—PC Story Mode—and keep them completely separate from GTA Online. BattlEye settings, community claims and a successful workaround do not override Rockstar’s online enforcement rules.
