How to Manage Nintendo Switch 2 Storage and Move Games to a microSD Express Card

To move eligible game files on Nintendo Switch 2, open System Settings > Data Management > Move System / microSD Express Card Data, select the software data, and choose OK. The command can move downloaded software, add-on content, and eligible update data between system memory and a microSD Express card. It does not move save data, and it is not a permanent setting for where every future download installs.

Nintendo Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, with some capacity reserved for system use. Nintendo says no individual game currently requires extra storage to play, so a card is optional until your software library or captures outgrow the space available. If you add storage, it must be a microSD Express card; a regular microSD card from the original Nintendo Switch cannot store or load digital games or save data on Switch 2.

Where is the Nintendo Switch 2 game-move command?

The transfer control is part of Data Management rather than the software icon menu. Use this exact path from the HOME Menu:

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Scroll to and select Data Management.
  3. Choose Move System / microSD Express Card Data.
  4. Select the software data you want to move. This can include downloaded software, add-on content, and update data that Nintendo allows to be migrated.
  5. Review the selection and confirm with OK.

The command works in either direction: eligible data can move from system memory to the card, or from the card back to system memory. Keep the console powered while the transfer runs and do not remove the card during the operation. The menu is a data-location tool, not a download-preference switch.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

What the move screen actually controls

Nintendo describes this function as a way to send software data between the console and a microSD Express card. It is useful when the internal memory is crowded, when you want to consolidate a library on the card, or when you need to bring a title back into system memory. It does not create a second copy; the selected data is relocated between the two storage locations.

What moving a game does—and does not—move

Downloaded software, add-ons, and eligible updates

Downloaded games, downloadable content, and update files are the types of software data covered by the move command. A title can therefore be playable after its software files have been moved, provided the card is inserted and recognized.

Save data stays in system memory

Game saves remain in the console’s system memory. They cannot be saved or copied to a microSD Express card. Moving a game does not move its progress, user profile information, or other save data. Nintendo’s support wording is explicit: Save data and some update data cannot be migrated. (Nintendo Support)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Deleting downloaded software also leaves its save data untouched. If you remove a game to reclaim space, you can download the software again later and continue with the save associated with the relevant user, subject to the title’s own save and account requirements.

Some update data may remain or move later

Not every update file can be migrated. Nintendo also warns that after you continue playing, later update data may be stored in the location you did not select during the move. That behavior does not mean the transfer failed; it means the move tool does not guarantee one permanent location for all future updates.

Do you need a microSD Express card for Switch 2?

No. Nintendo lists 256 GB of console storage for Switch 2, with part of that capacity reserved for system use, and says no individual game currently requires additional storage to play. Owners with enough free internal space can use the console without buying an expansion card.

An expansion becomes useful when several large downloads, add-on packages, or captured videos consume the available memory. It is also useful if you prefer to keep a larger installed library instead of deleting and redownloading games. The card is an optional capacity choice, not a requirement for a particular game.

Regular microSD card previously used with the original Switch Cannot save or load digital games on Switch 2 Cannot save or load Switch 2 save data Screenshots and videos captured to the card can be loaded Its capacity does not make it a compatible game-storage card for Switch 2

The distinction is compatibility, not the word “microSD” on the package. Nintendo’s guidance says, Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. (Nintendo Support)

How to choose a card that works

Look specifically for “microSD Express”

Switch 2 requires the Express format for expanded game storage. An ordinary microSD or microSDHC/ microSDXC card that worked in the original Switch is not a substitute for game installation on Switch 2. Check the card’s stated format before purchase rather than relying on a generic “microSD” label.

Stay within Nintendo’s capacity limit

Nintendo’s compatibility information supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. A card above that stated limit is not an advised choice for this console. You do not need to buy the maximum capacity; choose expansion based on the amount of software and captured media you intend to keep installed.

Plan for the first-use internet update

Nintendo says an internet system update is required the first time a microSD Express card is used. Connect the console to the internet and complete any requested system update before judging the card unusable. The requirement applies to initial use, not to every move operation.

Do not assume a guaranteed speed increase

Express cards read and write faster than ordinary microSD cards according to Nintendo, but the available information does not establish a specific loading-time improvement for every game. Treat the card primarily as an expansion option and buy a compatible capacity, not a promised performance percentage.

Can an old Switch SD card be used on Switch 2?

An original-Switch regular microSD card has a limited role on Switch 2. The console can load screenshots and videos that were captured to that card, but it cannot use the card to save or load digital games or save data. Moving the old card into the new console therefore does not turn it into game expansion storage.

If your old card contains captures you want to keep, copy or view those files before changing how you manage storage. For new game storage, use a microSD Express card and the Move System / microSD Express Card Data command.

How save data, cloud backup, and deletion fit together

Deleting software is not deleting progress

When space is tight, Data Management lets you delete downloaded software and download it again later. The deletion removes the installed program files, not the save data stored in system memory. This makes deletion a practical way to clear room for a game you want to play now without starting the game over when you reinstall it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cloud backup is separate from card storage

Nintendo Switch Online cloud backup is available for supported titles. It is a separate backup method and does not place saves on the microSD Express card. A card can carry eligible software files and captures; it is not a save-data backup device.

What a move cannot protect

Because saves remain in system memory, a card transfer should not be treated as a complete backup of your progress. If you are preparing to replace a console or move an account, use Nintendo’s system-transfer process and any supported cloud features rather than relying on the card alone.

Freeing space when the console is full

Remove a game you can redownload

  1. Open System Settings from HOME.
  2. Enter Data Management.
  3. Use the software-management controls to delete a downloaded title you do not need installed immediately.
  4. Redownload the title later when you have space and want to play it again.

The save remains in system memory when the downloaded software is deleted, so this approach is different from deleting a user’s progress.

Preserve captures before deleting them

Screenshots and videos can be uploaded to the Nintendo Switch app or transferred to a computer with a USB cable. Make and verify the copy you want to keep, then remove the console copies through Data Management. This separates media archiving from game storage and avoids deleting an irreplaceable capture before it exists somewhere else.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add a compatible card when deletion becomes routine

If you repeatedly uninstall software merely to make room, a microSD Express card can provide additional capacity for supported software data and captures. Owners who still have comfortable free space in the 256 GB internal storage do not need to add one solely because the slot exists.

Moving software after adding a microSD Express card

Insert a compatible card, complete the required first-use internet system update, and then open the move command. Select only the software data that should change location. You can leave a title in system memory, move it to the card, or move it back later as your free-space needs change.

After a transfer, launch the game normally from HOME. If a later update appears in system memory even though the base software is on the card, that is consistent with Nintendo’s warning that some update data cannot be migrated and subsequent updates may be stored in the other location.

Moving from the original Switch to Switch 2

Moving data between two locations on one Switch 2 is different from transferring an account and software between consoles. If you are migrating from the original Switch, follow Nintendo’s system-transfer guide rather than treating the old microSD card as a portable game library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the source console

Nintendo recommends moving as much data as possible into the original Switch’s system storage before beginning the system transfer. The regular microSD card used by that console does not become usable for game data on Switch 2. The destination can use a microSD Express card for expanded storage after the transfer.

Use a local transfer when both consoles are available

Nintendo provides a local method for a source console and a Switch 2 that are both present. Keep both systems available and follow the on-screen transfer instructions so the data moves directly between them. This is the appropriate route when you still have the original console and can complete the process in one session.

Understand the server method before choosing it

Nintendo also documents a server method for cases in which the source console will not be available for the normal local process. The source uploads the transfer data, is initialized after the upload, and the stored data is retained for up to one year. Initialization is a consequential step: do not choose this route until you have confirmed that the source data is uploaded and that you accept the source console being initialized.

Read Nintendo’s current instructions for the exact transfer screens and conditions: System Transfers to Nintendo Switch 2.

Storage decisions for common situations

You have plenty of internal space

Keep software in system memory and skip the card. Nintendo does not require an expansion card for any individual game currently listed in its Data Management guidance.

You want a larger installed library

Add a microSD Express card within the 2 TB supported limit, then move eligible software through Data Management. Keep in mind that saves remain in system memory and that some updates may use the other location.

You are running out of space because of videos

Transfer wanted captures to the Nintendo Switch app or a computer by USB cable, verify the copies, and delete the console versions. A card can add room, but archiving captures may recover space without changing where games are installed.

You still own only an old regular microSD card

Use it to load its existing screenshots and videos if needed, but do not expect it to install or run digital games on Switch 2. Buy a microSD Express card only if you need additional supported storage.

Troubleshooting move and storage problems

The card is not accepted for game storage

  • Confirm that the card is labeled microSD Express, not merely microSD.
  • Check that its capacity is within Nintendo’s supported maximum of 2 TB.
  • Complete the internet system update required the first time a card is used.
  • If it is the regular card from the original Switch, limit expectations to loading captures; it cannot carry digital games or saves on Switch 2.

The move finishes but an update is still in system memory

Nintendo says some update data cannot be migrated and that later updates can be saved in the location you did not select. The presence of update data in the other location is therefore an expected limitation of the tool, not proof that save data was moved or lost.

You are worried that deleting a game erased progress

Downloaded software and save data are separate. Nintendo says deleting software leaves the save data unaffected, so redownload the software from the console when you are ready to resume. Cloud backup for a supported title is an additional Nintendo Switch Online option, not card storage.

You need more space immediately

Delete software you can redownload, preserve captures to the Nintendo Switch app or a computer, and remove verified local copies. If those steps do not provide enough room for your installed library, use a compatible microSD Express card. USB hard drives are not currently supported as Switch 2 storage.

Important limits to remember

  • The move command is under System Settings > Data Management; it is not a setting that permanently directs all future downloads to one location.
  • Save data stays in system memory and cannot be copied to the microSD Express card.
  • Some update data cannot be migrated, and future updates may appear in the other storage location.
  • Only microSD Express cards are supported for expanded game storage on Switch 2.
  • Nintendo supports microSD Express capacities up to 2 TB.
  • A regular original-Switch microSD card can provide access to captures, but not digital games or save data.
  • USB hard drives are not currently supported as storage.
