How to Set Up Nintendo Switch 2 Parental Controls for Game Purchases and Playtime

Nintendo Switch 2 uses three separate control surfaces for family restrictions: the console’s System Settings > Parental Controls for age ratings and communication, the free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app for play-time limits and activity reports, and the supervising adult’s Nintendo Account settings for Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Store purchase restrictions. A console PIN or a play-time limit does not, by itself, block purchases.

For the fullest setup, use an adult Nintendo Account (the supervising parent or guardian must be 18 or older), a supported iPhone or Android device, and the Switch 2. If you do not want to use a phone or tablet, you can still configure the console’s age and communication restrictions and protect them with a four- to eight-digit PIN.

What each parental-control setting actually controls

The most common setup mistake is treating “parental controls” as one switch. Nintendo separates the controls by where they are managed and what they can restrict.

Control surface Use it for Important limitation
Switch 2 System Settings Software age ratings, communication restrictions and other restrictions available directly on the console; protecting changes with a PIN Works without a smart device, but does not provide the app’s play-time and activity features
Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app Daily play-time limits, bedtime, activity viewing, selected-game exceptions and additional Switch 2 controls Requires a supported phone or tablet and an adult Nintendo Account
Parent or guardian Nintendo Account settings Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Store purchase restrictions, eShop viewing restrictions, friend suggestions and third-party information-sharing choices Separate from the console PIN and from the app’s play-time controls

Most Switch 2 restrictions apply to the system rather than to an individual user. Choose settings that are appropriate for the youngest person who uses that console. The app can show activity by user, but a system-wide restriction can still affect everyone playing on the device.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

What you need before starting

  • A Nintendo Switch 2 with access to its System Settings.
  • A parent or guardian Nintendo Account belonging to someone aged 18 or older if you are using the app or managing a child or supervised account.
  • A supported smart device: Nintendo currently lists iOS 16.0 or newer and Android 8.0 or newer for the app.
  • The free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, if you want time limits, bedtime controls or activity reports.
  • A private four- to eight-digit PIN for console restrictions. Do not give this PIN to the child whose activity you are limiting.

No accessory, replacement part, subscription, printed manual or other physical product is required for this setup. The console is the only hardware being configured; the app and Nintendo Account controls are software services.

Set age and communication restrictions on Switch 2 without a phone

This route is useful when you only need age-rating or communication controls, or when you do not want to link a smart device. Nintendo’s Switch 2 instructions allow these restrictions to be configured directly on the console.

  1. From the Switch 2 HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Open Parental Controls.
  3. Choose the option to configure parental controls on the console rather than linking the mobile app.
  4. Select the restrictions you want, such as software age ratings and communication limits. The labels and available choices can vary with a system update or region.
  5. Save the choices when the console prompts you.
  6. Create a four- to eight-digit PIN, then enter it again to confirm.

The PIN authorizes changes to the restrictions and may also be required for some protected system settings. Store it in a password manager or another private place. If a child knows the PIN, the controls are no longer an effective barrier.

Use the Parental Controls app for play-time limits

The app is the control surface for time-based rules and activity review. Nintendo identifies it as a free app for Switch 2 and Switch systems.

Install and link the app

  1. Install Nintendo Switch Parental Controls on an iPhone running iOS 16.0 or later, or an Android device running Android 8.0 or later.
  2. Open the app and sign in with the supervising parent or guardian’s Nintendo Account. That account holder must be at least 18.
  3. Follow the app’s on-screen linking process to associate the app with the Switch 2. Keep the console and smart device available while the link is completed.
  4. Open the app’s Parental Controls area after the console appears as a linked system.

If the menus shown on your device do not match these names, check Nintendo’s current support instructions. Nintendo can change labels and requirements through app, console or account updates, and availability can differ by region.

Set a daily play-time limit

  1. In the linked console’s Parental Controls area, choose the daily play-time setting.
  2. Set the amount of time allowed. Nintendo supports different limits on different days, so you can use one schedule for school days and another for weekends.
  3. Save the schedule and confirm that it is assigned to the intended Switch 2.

The time control applies to the console. The app can display activity by user, but the limit is not a separate allowance for every Nintendo Account on the system.

Add a bedtime

Use the app’s bedtime setting when the goal is to stop play at a particular clock time rather than after a number of minutes. You can use a daily limit, a bedtime, or both.

When both are active, the earlier restriction takes effect. For example, if the daily allowance would end at 9:30 p.m. but bedtime is 9 p.m., play ends at 9 p.m. The bedtime does not extend the daily allowance; it is an additional cutoff.

Choose what happens when time expires

The app offers Suspend Play When Time’s Up. With it enabled, the software is stopped when the limit is reached. With it disabled, the console displays a notification and the child can continue playing. Decide which behavior fits your household before saving the rule: a notification is less disruptive, while suspension provides an actual stop.

Review activity and make selected exceptions

The app supports activity viewing, allowing a parent or guardian to see how the system is being used. Nintendo also allows individually selected games to ignore restrictions. Use an exception only for a specific title that you have reviewed; it does not turn off every restriction on the console.

Block game and add-on purchases through the supervising Nintendo Account

Purchase controls are separate from both play-time settings and the console PIN. To restrict a child or supervised account from buying games or other Nintendo content, use the supervising adult’s Nintendo Account settings.

  1. Sign in to the parent or guardian Nintendo Account that supervises the child or supervised account.
  2. Open the account’s family or supervised-account settings.
  3. Select the child or supervised account whose purchases you want to control.
  4. Open the Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store purchase-restriction settings and enable the restrictions you need.
  5. Save the account changes, then verify that the restriction is attached to the intended child or supervised account.

Nintendo’s feature comparison places purchase restrictions and eShop viewing restrictions in Nintendo Account settings, not in the console’s parental-control PIN and not in the mobile app’s play-time panel. If a child uses a different account, apply the restriction to that account as well.

What this setting covers

The account-level rule is intended for Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Store purchases made by the supervised account. It is not a timer and does not stop a game that has already been downloaded from running during allowed play time.

Phone and tablet in-app purchases are a separate case

If the purchase is made inside an app on a phone or tablet rather than through Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store, Nintendo says to use that device’s own parental-control and purchase settings. A Nintendo Account purchase restriction should not be assumed to cover a third-party mobile app or a payment flow handled by iOS or Android.

A complete setup sequence for a family console

Use this order when you want both time limits and purchase protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. On the Switch 2, open System Settings > Parental Controls and choose the age-rating and communication restrictions that suit the youngest player.
  2. Create and confirm a private four- to eight-digit console PIN.
  3. Install the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on a supported phone or tablet.
  4. Sign in with the supervising adult’s Nintendo Account and link the Switch 2.
  5. Set daily play-time limits, varying them by day if needed.
  6. Add a bedtime if you want a clock-based cutoff as well.
  7. Choose whether Suspend Play When Time’s Up should stop software or only show a warning.
  8. Review activity and add exceptions only for individually approved games.
  9. In the supervising Nintendo Account’s family settings, apply Nintendo eShop and Nintendo Store purchase restrictions to each child or supervised account.
  10. Test the arrangement with the child present: confirm that an age or communication rule behaves as expected, that the app shows the linked console, and that the purchase restriction is assigned to the correct account.

How the controls interact

Age ratings and play time solve different problems

An age-rating restriction addresses whether software is suitable for the selected age range. A play-time rule addresses how long the console can be used. A game can be age-appropriate and still be unavailable after the daily limit or bedtime.

Communication controls are not purchase controls

Restricting communication limits interactions supported by the console and its services. It does not automatically prevent a child from buying a game, downloadable content or another item. Purchase protection must be configured in the supervising Nintendo Account.

The PIN is not the app password

The console PIN protects changes made on the Switch 2. The adult Nintendo Account credentials authorize account-level settings, and the app requires that adult account to manage its linked controls. Keep both forms of access private.

System-wide rules require a youngest-player check

Because most console restrictions apply across the system, settings chosen for one child can affect an older child using the same Switch 2. The app’s user activity view helps you see who played, but it does not turn system-wide age or communication controls into per-user rules.

Shared parental control access in app version 2.6.0

Nintendo’s app update history lists version 2.6.0, released September 14, 2026. That update says shared parental controls allow two parents or guardians to monitor activity and set daily play-time limits from their respective devices.

This feature is useful when two adults need access without sharing one phone. Each adult should use their own authorized Nintendo Account access as presented by Nintendo’s current setup flow. App behavior and device compatibility are version-dependent, so check the current app listing and Nintendo support instructions if the shared-control option is absent.

Troubleshooting the most common setup problems

The app is not showing play-time controls

  • Confirm that the Switch 2 is linked to the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, rather than only having console settings configured.
  • Check that the phone meets Nintendo’s current minimum: iOS 16.0 or newer or Android 8.0 or newer.
  • Sign in with the adult Nintendo Account used to supervise the console.
  • Update the app and console if Nintendo’s current instructions require a newer version, then reopen the Parental Controls area.

A child can still buy content

  • Check the supervising Nintendo Account, not only the console PIN.
  • Verify that the restriction is applied to the exact child or supervised account used in Nintendo eShop.
  • Determine whether the transaction occurred in a phone or tablet app. If so, configure the device’s own purchase controls.

Play continues after the allotted time

  • Confirm that a daily limit or bedtime is actually saved for the linked Switch 2.
  • Check whether Suspend Play When Time’s Up is disabled. In that mode, Nintendo displays a notification but allows play to continue.
  • Remember that the earlier of the daily limit and bedtime wins when both are configured.

The menu names differ

Nintendo can revise menus through updates, and account options can vary by country or region. Use the current Nintendo support instructions for the displayed labels rather than selecting an unrelated setting based on an older screenshot or guide.

The PIN is forgotten

Do not guess repeatedly or give the PIN to the child. Use Nintendo’s current recovery process for Switch 2 parental-control PINs, following the account and console prompts shown for your region. Recovery requirements can change, so the current support instructions are the authoritative route.

Practical household policies that fit the controls

For school nights

Set a shorter weekday limit and a bedtime that leaves a buffer before sleep. Enable suspension if the limit must be enforced automatically; leave it off only when a warning and parent intervention are sufficient.

For weekends

Use the app’s per-day schedule rather than changing one global limit every Friday. This keeps the weekday rule intact and makes the weekend allowance visible to everyone.

For a shared console with different ages

Set age and communication restrictions for the youngest regular player, because those controls generally apply system-wide. Use activity reports to understand which user is playing, and consider individually approved game exceptions for older players instead of weakening the system-wide baseline.

For supervised online spending

Apply Nintendo Account purchase restrictions before adding payment information or allowing access to Nintendo eShop. Recheck the account assignment whenever a child’s Nintendo Account changes, because a console-wide PIN does not replace account-level purchase protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to recheck after updates or account changes

  • Whether the app still meets the phone’s operating-system requirement.
  • Whether the linked console is still visible in the app.
  • Whether daily limits, bedtime and suspension behavior remain enabled.
  • Whether purchase restrictions still apply to every child or supervised account using the Switch 2.
  • Whether a newly added game needs its own review or exception.
  • Whether Nintendo has changed menu labels or regional account requirements.

Nintendo’s published app requirements and feature list are current details rather than permanent specifications. Recheck them after major app or console updates, especially when moving to a different phone or adding another supervising adult.
