Tripo’s Help Center says paid users may use, modify, distribute, license and commercially exploit models generated through the service, including work made from GPT‑Image‑2.5 Sunburst images. Free-plan users are not granted commercial-use rights under Tripo’s stated policy, and Tripo says it retains rights to free users’ inputs and outputs.
That permission covers Tripo-generated output, not automatically the image you uploaded as a reference. Copyrighted characters, brand artwork, photographs of real people and other third-party material can create separate legal problems even when your Tripo account is paid.

The short answer: paid Tripo access is the contractual requirement
Tripo’s official guidance answers the commercial-use question directly: “Yes, if you are on a paid plan.” The same guidance says paid users have full rights to use, modify, distribute and commercially exploit generated 3D models. In practical terms, a model made in a paid workflow can be used for a game, client delivery, asset pack, 3D print, film, marketing campaign or print-on-demand product, subject to the rights in any material used as input and to other laws that may apply.
A free account is different. Tripo says it retains all rights to free-user inputs and outputs and does not grant commercial use. If you intend to sell a model, license it, publish it in a paid product, deliver it to a client or use it to earn advertising or production revenue, move the work to a qualifying paid plan before relying on it commercially. Do not assume that paying later automatically cures every issue with an asset generated while you were on the free tier; keep records and ask Tripo how its current terms treat that transition.

What GPT‑Image‑2.5 Sunburst is in Tripo
Sunburst is a documented image model in Tripo’s developer workflow. Tripo’s September 2026 developer changelog lists the model identifier chat_image_2.5_sunburst for text-to-image and image-to-image endpoints. That means you may encounter Sunburst when generating a source image from a prompt or when editing an uploaded image before using the result in a 3D workflow.
Tripo describes Sunburst’s main trade-off relative to Flare as preservation of untouched portions of an edited image. If you alter one area, Sunburst is positioned to keep other areas closer to the original. Higher quality settings consume additional credits, so a paid subscription does not necessarily mean unlimited high-quality generations. Your account’s credit allowance, endpoint pricing and quality controls determine the cost of a particular run.

OpenAI’s 2026 announcement describes GPT‑Image‑2.5 Sunburst as a model for premium visual workflows that benefit from tighter control across edits, including production-ready campaign creative and polished product imagery. That positioning explains why a Sunburst image might be used as a reference or design source, but it does not change Tripo’s account-tier rule: the commercial permission comes from using a paid Tripo plan.
Which commercial activities are covered on a paid plan?
Games and interactive products
Tripo’s paid-user guidance lists games as an allowed example. You can incorporate a generated model into a game, virtual environment or interactive application, modify its geometry and textures, and distribute it as part of that product. If you sell the raw model separately, document that the model was created in a paid workflow and confirm that every reference asset was yours to use.
Client and commissioned work
Paid users may use generated models for client work. A studio can create a prototype, product visualization, virtual-production asset or final deliverable for a customer. Your client agreement should state what rights are being delivered and should avoid promising exclusivity or guaranteed copyright ownership unless a lawyer has confirmed those points for the relevant jurisdiction.

Asset packs and licensing
Tripo names distribution and licensing among permitted activities for paid users. That supports selling a collection of models or licensing them to another party. Keep the license scope precise: commercial permission from Tripo does not make a model free of trademark, publicity, design-right or contractual claims arising from recognizable third-party material.
3D printing and physical products
A paid workflow can be used for commercial 3D printing, including selling printed objects or using a model in a manufactured product. Before production, check whether the reference depicts a protected character, logo, product design or person. Physical manufacture can create the same infringement issues as digital distribution; changing the medium does not remove the underlying rights question.
Film, marketing and print-on-demand
Film and marketing are listed examples in Tripo’s guidance, as are print-on-demand uses. You can use a paid-plan model in a rendered shot, advertisement, poster or merchandise design, but clear rights in logos, likenesses, photographs and supplied artwork remain essential.

What a free Tripo account allows—and why it is risky for sales
Tripo’s stated free-plan policy is not a limited commercial license. It says Tripo retains all rights to free-user inputs and outputs and does not grant commercial use. That affects more than selling a downloadable file. A free-plan output should not be placed in a monetized game, client project, paid course, advertising campaign, marketplace listing, commercial 3D print or subscription library.
Changing the file after downloading it does not necessarily solve the problem. Modification is itself a commercial use when the modified result is sold or delivered. The safest operational rule is to create commercially intended work while the account is on a paid plan, retain the invoice or subscription record, and save the project identifier and generation date.
Your reference image is a separate rights problem
Commercial permission for a generated Tripo model does not grant permission to the image that guided it. Tripo specifically warns that copyrighted characters, intellectual property and artwork in a reference can still infringe. The image-to-image workflow may transform the picture, but transformation is not the same as obtaining a license for the original.

Lower-risk inputs
- Artwork or photographs you created and still control.
- Stock images whose license expressly allows derivative works, commercial AI processing and the intended distribution.
- Public-domain material, after checking that the public-domain status applies in the country where you will publish.
- Client-supplied material accompanied by written permission covering AI processing and commercial derivatives.
Higher-risk or uncertain inputs
- Fan art, screenshots, scans or images downloaded from an unknown source.
- Recognizable characters, logos, uniforms, product designs or other branded elements.
- Portraits of real people without a release covering the intended commercial use.
- Photographs whose license permits display but not derivative works, resale or machine-learning processing.
If you cannot show where an input came from and what its license permits, replace it before generating the commercial asset. A paid Tripo plan cannot repair an unclear chain of title.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What rights do you give Tripo?
Paid users still grant Tripo a royalty-free, perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive license to use and display submitted or generated content as needed to provide the service. This is a license to Tripo; it is not a statement that Tripo becomes the exclusive owner of your commercial project. It does mean you should not upload confidential client material, unreleased product designs or restricted data without checking your client contract and Tripo’s current privacy and service terms.
“Non-exclusive” also matters when planning a product. Tripo’s paid-use guidance gives you commercial exploitation rights, but it does not promise that no one else can generate a similar model or that your output is unique. Treat exclusivity as a separate business and legal question.

Tripo’s permission answers whether its platform terms allow paid users to exploit an output. It does not determine whether a court or copyright office will recognize copyright in every AI-assisted result. The answer can depend on the amount of human creative control, the jurisdiction, the final edits and the way the work was created.
Nor does the permission eliminate trademark, publicity, design-right, privacy or contract claims. A model that resembles a famous character, a branded sneaker or a real person may attract claims even if Tripo allows commercial use. Avoid marketing language that promises “exclusive,” “copyright-protected” or “risk-free” assets unless you have obtained advice specific to the project and territory.
A compliant workflow for a model you plan to sell
- Choose the account tier first. Confirm that the Tripo account and workspace are on a paid plan whose current terms grant commercial use. Save the plan name, billing confirmation and the date you generated the asset.
- Inventory every input. Record whether the Sunburst source was original artwork, licensed stock, public-domain material or a client asset. Store the license, release or permission with the project.
- Remove risky elements. Replace unknown-source images and clear recognizable characters, logos, products and people before generating. Do not assume that a prompt or image edit makes protected material safe.
- Generate and document. Note whether you used text-to-image or image-to-image, the
chat_image_2.5_sunburstendpoint when applicable, quality settings and the generation date. Higher quality settings may use additional credits. - Build the 3D asset. Keep records of substantial modeling, sculpting, retopology, texture work and other human edits. Those records help explain your contribution and support a client handoff.
- Run a rights review. Inspect the final mesh, textures, logos, likenesses and packaging for third-party material. Separate the platform-use question from copyrightability and trademark clearance.
- Deliver with accurate terms. Tell a client or buyer what license you are granting, whether redistribution of the raw file is allowed and whether any components have separate restrictions. Do not promise exclusivity unless you can support it.
- Recheck before release. Read Tripo’s current Terms of Service and Help Center guidance immediately before publishing, selling or printing. Keep the version and date of the terms in your project file.
Common scenarios and the right decision
| Scenario | Decision | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Free account creates a model for a paid indie game. | Do not ship it as-is. | Free users are not granted commercial use. Recreate the asset in a qualifying paid workflow and verify the inputs. |
| Paid account turns your own Sunburst image into a decorative model for an online store. | Generally allowed under Tripo’s paid-plan guidance. | You have the platform’s commercial permission and control the reference, subject to ordinary legal checks. |
| Paid account converts fan art of a movie character into a printable statue. | High risk; obtain permission or use original material. | The paid-plan grant does not license the character or fan artwork. |
| Agency creates a product visualization from a client’s confidential photograph. | Check the client contract and Tripo’s service terms before upload. | Commercial output rights do not override confidentiality, privacy or data-handling obligations. |
| Creator sells a model as an “exclusive” asset. | Avoid that promise without separate verification. | Tripo permits commercial exploitation but does not guarantee uniqueness or exclusivity. |
Questions to resolve before you publish or sell
- Was the Tripo generation performed while the account was on a paid plan?
- Can you prove you own or properly license every reference image and texture?
- Does the output contain a recognizable person, character, logo, product design or other protected element?
- Does your customer agreement permit uploading the source material to an external service?
- Are you describing the asset accurately, without promising guaranteed copyright, exclusivity or universal legal clearance?
- Have you checked Tripo’s current Terms of Service and plan language on the date of release?
Bottom line for Sunburst users
You can use a GPT‑Image‑2.5 Sunburst-derived model commercially in Tripo when the work is generated under a paid Tripo plan that includes the stated commercial-use grant. The grant supports modification, distribution, licensing, games, client work, asset packs, 3D printing, film, marketing and print-on-demand. A free account does not provide that permission. Keep the input-image rights separate, because Tripo’s commercial-use statement does not legalize copyrighted references, and treat copyrightability, exclusivity and third-party claims as questions that require their own review.
