Often, yes—but “free” is not a licence. It may describe a zero price, an open-source distribution model, or permission for personal use only. The font’s actual licence determines whether you may turn it into a logo, embed it on a website, modify it, redistribute the files, or hand editable work to a client.

Before using any font commercially, identify the exact family and version, read the licence supplied with that download or service, and keep a copy with your project records. The same family name can appear in multiple releases or from multiple distributors with different terms.

The short answer for each common use

  • Logo: A font licensed under the SIL Open Font License (OFL) may be used in logos and other artwork, subject to the licence’s conditions. The OFL FAQ expressly lists books, posters, artwork, logos and websites as permitted uses: SIL Open Font License FAQ.
  • Website: You need permission for web embedding, either through a licence that allows self-hosting or through an authorised hosted-font service. A desktop entitlement does not automatically grant the right to upload font files to your server. Adobe’s product terms, for example, restrict copying and distributing its font software: Adobe Fonts Product Specific Terms (7 October 2024).
  • Client project: Commercial client work is usually allowed when the licence covers commercial use. Adobe says its Fonts service can be used for commercial projects made for clients. You can generally deliver finished PDFs, JPEGs or PNGs when the font data is rasterised or properly embedded, but an editable source file may require the client to have its own appropriate access: Adobe Fonts licensing FAQ.

“Free for personal use” should be treated as non-commercial unless the designer gives you separate written commercial permission. Do not infer rights from a download button, a font marketplace label, or the fact that a file costs nothing.

What “free font” can mean

Free of charge

A no-cost download can still prohibit business use, logos, advertising, client work or web hosting. Some authors publish a basic version at no charge and sell a separate commercial licence. The price is not the permission.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Open-source

Open-source fonts come with a licence granting specified freedoms, but those freedoms still have conditions. Google describes its catalogue as free and open source, while warning that each family is governed by its own licence. Read the licence file shipped with the exact family and version: Google Fonts FAQ.

Included with a subscription

A subscription library may let you activate fonts while your account is eligible, without giving you ownership of the font software. Service terms can limit copying, redistribution, the number of users, domains or other forms of access. Record whether the rights depend on an active subscription and what happens to new work if the subscription ends.

Logo use: what to verify

A logo normally converts lettering into artwork, but that does not make every font licence interchangeable. Confirm that the licence permits commercial artwork and logos, then check whether it imposes notice, modification or naming conditions.

SIL Open Font License

The OFL FAQ specifically permits fonts in logos and other artwork. Its conditions still matter when you distribute the font itself or a modified version. Keep the copyright and licence notices required by the licence, and review any reserved-font-name rule before renaming or altering a family.

Turning type into outlines

Converting text to vector outlines can prevent a recipient from needing the font merely to view the finished mark, but outlining is not a substitute for permission to use the font in the first place. Keep the original licence record even when the final logo contains only paths.

Trademark and unusual cases

Font permission does not decide whether your logo is registrable as a trademark, infringes another mark, or complies with a country’s advertising rules. If the project involves a disputed name, international filing or unusual redistribution, obtain advice from qualified counsel in the relevant jurisdiction.

Putting a font on a website

Self-hosting

Self-hosting means you copy webfont files to infrastructure you control and serve them to visitors. The licence must allow web embedding and the file formats you intend to use. Check whether self-hosting is allowed at all, whether only particular formats are permitted, and whether the licence limits domains, traffic or seats. If those details are not stated, ask the foundry or use a licence that states them clearly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hosted services

A hosted service can deliver the font without you distributing the underlying files yourself, but your service agreement controls the permitted sites, users and traffic. “Available in a desktop app” does not by itself authorise web delivery. Adobe’s terms illustrate the distinction by restricting copying and distribution of licensed font software: Adobe Fonts Product Specific Terms.

Client websites

If you build a site for a client, determine who will host the files and who must hold the licence. A contract can assign responsibility, but it cannot grant rights that the font licence does not grant. Give the client the licence information and tell them whether continued use depends on your account or an active subscription.

Performance does not change licensing

Subsetting, converting formats or using a variable-font build may reduce page weight, but these are modifications or derivative distributions. Confirm that the licence allows the technical changes and preserves any required notices or reserved names.

Client work and delivery of files

Finished exports

Adobe states that its Fonts service supports commercial digital and print projects created for clients. A finished PDF, JPEG or PNG can generally be delivered when the font is properly embedded or rasterised, because the client receives the design rather than a stand-alone font file: Adobe Fonts licensing FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Editable source files

Source files in applications such as design, presentation or video software may require the recipient to access the font. Before handing over an editable file, check whether the licence permits that transfer and whether the client must activate the font independently. If the licence does not allow you to send the font software, supply outlined or exported artwork where practical and instruct the client to obtain its own licence.

Packaging a project

Do not assume that collecting a project’s fonts into a ZIP file is harmless. Redistribution is a separate act from using the font to make an image. Read the licence’s redistribution clause, preserve notices, and ask the client to accept responsibility for any licence they must hold after handoff.

How the main licence patterns compare

Source or wording Commercial work Logo and artwork Website method Modification and notices Client transfer and subscription
SIL Open Font License Permitted under the licence’s terms. Explicitly permitted by the OFL FAQ. Websites are listed as permitted; confirm the exact version and conditions. Conditions apply to notices, redistribution, modified versions and reserved font names. Check the licence before sending font files or edited versions; no subscription is inherent in the OFL.
Google Fonts catalogue Catalog fonts are described as free and open source, but each family’s licence controls use. Depends on that family’s licence; not stated universally by the catalogue FAQ. Use the family’s licence and the permitted embedding method. Read the licence file shipped with the exact family and version. Redistribution and client delivery follow that family’s terms; subscription dependence is not stated by the catalogue FAQ.
Subscription library such as Adobe Fonts Adobe says commercial projects for clients are allowed. Use is tied to the service terms rather than a universal “free font” rule. Follow the service’s web-use and distribution rules; desktop access is not automatically self-hosting permission. Product terms restrict copying and distributing font software; follow any service notices. Finished exports can generally be delivered when embedded or rasterised; editable files may require the client’s own access. Continued rights can depend on an active subscription.
“Free for personal use” Not established; treat as non-commercial unless separate permission is supplied. Not established for commercial logos. Not established for business websites. Read the author’s commercial licence and attribution requirements. Do not send the font to a client unless redistribution is expressly allowed.

A practical licence-checking workflow

  1. Identify the exact asset. Record the family name, individual weights or styles, file formats, author or foundry, version number and the website or package from which you obtained it. A similarly named re-upload is not proof of identical terms.
  2. Save the licence. Download the text or PDF that accompanied the files and note the access date. Store it with the project, purchase receipt or subscription record so you can show what terms applied when the work was created.
  3. Confirm commercial permission. Look for explicit language covering business, advertising, paid products, client work and resale. If the wording says “personal use,” stop and obtain commercial permission before proceeding.
  4. Check logos and artwork. Search for terms covering logos, marks, print, digital artwork and merchandise. Under the OFL, the FAQ expressly permits logos, but other licences may not say so.
  5. Check web embedding. Confirm whether self-hosting is allowed, which formats may be served, whether a hosted service is required, and whether domains, traffic or seats are limited. A desktop licence alone is not enough.
  6. Read modification rules. Subsetting, renaming, converting, editing outlines or creating a derivative can trigger conditions. Note reserved-font-name rules and preserve required copyright and licence notices.
  7. Check attribution and notices. Determine whether credits must appear in a website, app, documentation, about page or redistribution package. Keep the notice in any package where the licence requires it.
  8. Plan client delivery. Separate finished exports from editable source files and raw font files. Confirm whether the client may receive each item, whether they need their own seat or account, and who is responsible for future updates.
  9. Check geography and duration. Verify territorial restrictions, seat counts, traffic caps and whether rights continue after a subscription ends. If the licence does not state a limit, do not invent one; ask the rights holder.
  10. Keep an audit trail. Save correspondence granting exceptions, the URL, version, date and the final decision. This prevents a later team member from replacing a licensed file with a differently licensed download.

Do you need to credit the font?

There is no universal answer. Some licences require notices when you redistribute the font software or a modified version, while using the font in a finished image may not require a visible credit. Read the attribution and notice clauses rather than assuming either “always credit” or “never credit.” If a website licence asks for a notice, place it where the licence specifies; if it does not, do not add a misleading statement that implies the font is public domain.

The U.S. copyright distinction

The U.S. Copyright Office explains that typeface designs generally are not copyrightable as typeface designs, while the software that generates the fonts may be protected: Copyright Office Circular 33. That distinction does not cancel a contract or licence governing font files. You can face a licence breach even when the visual letterforms themselves receive limited copyright protection. Rules in other countries may differ, so treat this as a U.S.-specific legal explanation, not global legal advice.

Common failure cases and fixes

The download page says “free,” but the licence says personal use

Remove the font from commercial production or contact the author for written commercial permission. Keep the response with your records; a marketplace label is not a substitute for the licence.

A logo works, but the website team wants the font files

Logo artwork permission does not automatically include web embedding. Obtain a web licence, switch to a family with suitable open terms, or use an authorised hosted service.

The client needs an editable file after handoff

Check the redistribution and user-access terms. If the client cannot lawfully receive the font, deliver outlined or exported artwork and have the client obtain its own access before editing.

A subscription ends after launch

Review the service terms for continued use, existing published work and future edits. Record the account holder and renewal responsibility in the project agreement, and do not promise perpetual font access unless the licence grants it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You modified the font and renamed it

Check modification, reserved-font-name and notice requirements before distributing the result. Some licences allow changes only when their conditions are met; others may require a separate agreement.

Bottom line

Use a free font in a logo, website or client project only after matching the exact use to the exact licence. The safest process is to document the file and version, confirm commercial and logo rights, obtain explicit web-embedding permission, separate finished exports from editable files, preserve required notices, and verify any subscription, seat, traffic or geographic limits. When the wording is ambiguous, ask the rights holder or qualified counsel instead of treating “free” as unlimited permission.
