The practical answer
The official ChatGPT apps for iOS and Android act as clients for OpenAI’s service. OpenAI documents cloud operation for its work products rather than a downloadable phone model that answers prompts locally. Because the documentation does not describe an on-device inference mode, the safest expectation is straightforward: a new question needs the phone to reach the service.

That conclusion is an architectural inference, not a quoted sentence saying “the mobile app cannot work offline.” App behavior can change with a release, platform, plan or workspace setting. Until OpenAI documents a local mode, do not rely on airplane mode for generating answers.
What “offline” can mean on a phone
People use “offline ChatGPT” to describe several different activities. Separating them prevents a cached screen or an export file from being mistaken for an offline chatbot.

What to expect in common situations
Airplane mode or a dead-data area
Turn on airplane mode and submit a fresh prompt and the app has no documented path to send that request to OpenAI. You may see a loading indicator, an error, or a retry control; the exact screen depends on the app version and whether any cached interface state remains. Reconnecting Wi‑Fi or cellular data is the remedy. Repeatedly tapping Send while offline does not create a local answer queue that OpenAI promises to process later.
A conversation that was open before you lost signal
The mobile apps provide chat-history views. If the messages were already downloaded, the visible portion may remain on screen or reopen from local cache. This is useful for rereading an itinerary, code snippet or explanation, but it is not evidence that the model is available. Older threads, attachments, images and portions that never finished loading may be missing. OpenAI does not guarantee complete offline history access, so save anything important before leaving coverage.
Chat history and synchronization
OpenAI states that “Cloud Work chats sync across web, mobile, and desktop.” Synchronization is therefore a cloud operation. A message drafted or a change made while disconnected cannot be treated as safely stored on the account until the app reconnects and confirms the update. If the information matters, copy it into the phone’s notes or files app as a second, ordinary offline copy.

Voice conversations
Voice availability in the mobile app does not imply local speech recognition or local model inference. Audio capture, transcription and response generation are service-backed functions. A previously displayed transcript may be readable, but starting a new voice exchange without connectivity is not a supported plan. Download or copy important spoken answers as text while online.
“Offline web search” is not an offline ChatGPT app
OpenAI uses the phrase “offline web search” for an eligible-workspace configuration. Its Help Center describes it as “a web search configuration for eligible ChatGPT workspaces.” When enabled, “ChatGPT uses OpenAI’s indexed and cached web content.” The data is held and searched on OpenAI’s service, not installed as a searchable web index on your phone.
This distinction has three practical consequences:
- Eligibility: It is a managed workspace setting, not a switch every consumer account can turn on.
- Freshness: Indexed or cached pages are not a live request to the public web. OpenAI explicitly says the feature is “not a full substitute for live web search.”
- Connectivity: Because the feature belongs to the ChatGPT service, it should not be treated as a way to submit prompts with the phone completely disconnected.
Use the label to describe the age and source of search material, not to claim that an iPhone or Android device contains a local copy of ChatGPT.

Why a connection is normally necessary
A ChatGPT request involves more than displaying an app screen. The phone must send your prompt, account and conversation context to the service, receive generated tokens, and often retrieve files, tools or search results. OpenAI’s documentation summarizes the operating model for its work products as “Work on web and mobile runs in the cloud.” Without a network path, that request-and-response exchange cannot be completed.

The absence of a documented local-model download matters too. An app can cache interface resources and recently viewed text without containing the model weights, runtime and supporting services needed to generate a new response. Cache persistence is an implementation detail that may vary by release, storage pressure and operating-system cleanup; it is not a feature guarantee.
How to prepare for a flight, outage or remote trip
Preparation preserves the information you will need; it does not turn the phone into an offline ChatGPT client. Complete these steps while connected.

- Ask for the essential answers early. Request the itinerary, checklist, directions, definitions or troubleshooting steps you expect to need, and wait until each response is fully displayed.
- Copy the useful text out of ChatGPT. Paste it into an offline-capable notes app or a document stored locally. This avoids relying on an app cache that may disappear after an update or storage cleanup.
- Save source files locally. Download manuals, tickets, maps, spreadsheets and reference PDFs, then confirm they open with the phone in airplane mode.
- Export your account when a durable archive is required. OpenAI provides a downloadable ZIP containing chat history and other relevant account data. Treat that ZIP as an archive to browse, not as a program that can answer follow-up questions.
- Test before departure. Disable Wi‑Fi and cellular data, open the notes and files you saved, and verify that the exact pages or passages you need are present.
- Keep a reconnection plan. Record which prompts or edits still need to be sent. When service returns, reopen the relevant chats and confirm that pending work actually synchronized.
Using saved material while disconnected
Once the phone is offline, work from the ordinary apps that store data locally: notes, files, an e-book reader or a document viewer. Search within the saved document rather than trying to invoke ChatGPT. If you need a calculation, translation or rewrite, perform it manually or mark the passage for a later prompt; do not assume an offline screen can accept and answer it.
Keep the date and context beside time-sensitive information. A copied answer about opening hours, transport or software behavior can become stale even though the text remains available offline. When you reconnect, ask ChatGPT to verify anything that depends on current conditions.
Troubleshooting when you reconnect
A prompt failed in airplane mode
- Restore Wi‑Fi or cellular data and wait for the phone to show a working connection.
- Reopen the conversation and check whether the prompt appears as sent, pending or unsent.
- If it is absent, submit it again rather than assuming the app queued it.
- For an important answer, wait for the complete response and copy it to a local file.
A chat appears on one device but not another
Do not infer that the missing copy was available offline. Cloud synchronization can only reconcile devices after they reconnect. Confirm that both devices use the intended account or workspace, allow the app to finish syncing, and then refresh the history view. Keep a local copy of any text created during the outage until you see it in the account.
The app shows old content but cannot answer
This is consistent with cached display data: reading and generating are separate capabilities. Use the displayed material as reference, then reconnect before asking a follow-up. If a message is important and only appears in the cache, copy it immediately into a local note while it is visible.

Limits that can change over time
Mobile operating systems may evict cached data when storage is low, an app is updated or the system performs maintenance. App releases can also alter which screens reopen without a network. Plans and managed workspaces may expose different tools, including the cached-search configuration. For those reasons, describe offline viewing as “may remain available,” not as a guaranteed archive, and check the current app behavior before depending on it for safety-critical information.
OpenAI’s wording about cloud work and exported data establishes the boundaries: the service handles generation and synchronization, while the ZIP provides a copy of account data. Neither statement promises local model execution. A disconnected phone can preserve information you deliberately saved, but it cannot be assumed to reproduce the online ChatGPT experience.
Quick pre-disconnection checklist
- Have all essential prompts been answered and fully loaded?
- Did you copy critical responses into a local notes or files app?
- Are source documents downloaded and readable with data disabled?
- If you need a durable record, did you request and store the account-data ZIP?
- Did you test the saved material in airplane mode?
- Have you marked questions that must be sent after reconnection?
Bottom line
There is no documented OpenAI consumer feature that lets the official iPhone or Android app generate fresh ChatGPT answers with no internet connection. Previously loaded text, locally saved documents and an exported ZIP can support offline reference work. “Offline web search” is a service-side, indexed-and-cached workspace option—not local inference—and cloud sync, live search and voice should wait until the phone is connected again.
