1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUsually, yes: you can often use Bluetooth headphones with your own phone or tablet on a flight, as long as cellular service is disabled and the airline permits Bluetooth. That does not mean the seatback entertainment screen can pair with them. For seatback audio, check the aircraft’s available connections and bring wired headphones or a compatible Bluetooth audio transmitter as a fallback.
When Bluetooth headphones are allowed on a plane
For U.S. flights, the FAA says phones and other portable electronic devices must be in airplane mode or have cellular disabled. Wi-Fi is conditional on an installed aircraft system and airline permission. The FAA’s Advisory Circular 91.21-1D, marked active and issued October 27, 2017, explains the operator’s role in determining whether devices can be used without interfering with safe aircraft operation.

Bluetooth and cellular are separate controls on supported devices. Apple says Bluetooth can remain available in Airplane Mode on listed iPhone, iPad, and Vision Pro devices, and that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth may be used in Airplane Mode if the airline allows them. See Apple’s Airplane Mode guidance. This is not a universal instruction for every device: follow your device maker’s directions and the airline’s rules.
Rules and procedures are not identical worldwide. EASA’s March 2026 Easy Access Rules for Air Operations place passenger-device permission under the operator’s responsibility, with procedures for announcements, use or stowage by flight phase, and crew instructions. In practice, the operating airline’s current directions—and any instruction from the crew—control what you may do on your flight.

Pair Bluetooth headphones with your own phone or tablet
On an iPhone or iPad, switch on Airplane Mode, then use Bluetooth settings to connect or reconnect your headphones if the airline permits Bluetooth. Keep cellular disabled. Other devices may use different menus or behave differently, so do not assume the Apple steps apply to every phone or tablet.
- Enable Airplane Mode, or otherwise disable cellular as required by the airline.
- Turn Bluetooth on if permitted, then connect your headphones through your device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Pause audio and listen whenever the crew gives a safety briefing or instruction.
Can Bluetooth headphones connect to the seatback screen?
Only if that particular entertainment system supports Bluetooth audio pairing. Do not assume it does: aircraft cabin configurations and installed systems vary, and the official guidance here does not establish universal seatback Bluetooth support. The FAA’s October 31, 2013 statement on portable electronic devices mentions connecting Bluetooth accessories such as a mouse or keyboard; it is not evidence that every seatback screen can pair with wireless headphones.

Check the operating airline’s information for your flight or look for a Bluetooth pairing option in the screen’s settings. If there is no such option, a compatible wired connection may be available. EASA notes that in-flight entertainment headphones can plug into the seat or around the seatback screen; the connector and configuration depend on the installed system. Its in-flight entertainment headphone FAQ describes this wired use case.

| Setup | Personal phone or tablet | Seatback entertainment | Check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth headphones paired directly | Works when Bluetooth is allowed and cellular is disabled. | Works only if the screen supports Bluetooth audio pairing. | Airline permission, device settings, and whether the screen offers pairing. |
| Bluetooth audio transmitter adapter | May transmit audio from another compatible wired source. | May work with a compatible wired seat or screen output. | Output-jack type, adapter compatibility, pairing, battery or charging needs, and airline instructions. |
| Wired headphones or earbuds | Works with a compatible device port or adapter. | Works when a compatible seat or screen audio output is provided. | Connector type and any aircraft-specific restrictions. |
A Bluetooth airplane audio transmitter is a conditional workaround, not a universal fix. It can send audio from a compatible wired output to Bluetooth headphones, but it cannot add Bluetooth to a system without a suitable audio output or resolve a connector mismatch. Wired headphones are the simpler fallback if you want to be prepared for seatback audio.

Headphone safety during the flight
The FAA says passengers must pause music or other device use and listen to the safety briefing. EASA also warns that headphone cords can obstruct you or a seatmate and impede quick movement during taxi, takeoff, and landing. Remove headphones, stow devices, or change how you use them whenever the crew directs you to do so.
