To choose which wide receiver to add off waivers, start with recurring targets and routes, then judge whether the player’s role will last. Compare candidates against your scoring settings, lineup needs and the time horizon that matters to your team—not just their latest box score. Because the right pickup depends on who is available in your league, use this method with your live player list rather than relying on a universal ranking.
How should you prioritize available wide receivers?
Work through the candidates in this order: opportunity, role durability, expected value for your roster, and the cost or waiver priority needed to get the player. A receiver with a modest recent score but a stable route-and-target role may be a better addition than one whose big game depended on a temporary opening.

- Measure opportunity. Check whether the receiver is running routes regularly and earning targets across games. Target share—the portion of a team’s targets going to a player—helps put raw target totals in context.
- Assess whether the role can last. Find out whether the opportunity comes from a promotion, a lasting change in the offense, or an injured teammate’s absence. A replacement can be useful now without being a durable rest-of-season option.
- Use efficiency to interpret the volume. Yards per route run can help distinguish productive route involvement from targets that have not produced much. Treat it as a supporting clue alongside playing time and targets, not a substitute for them.
- Compare expected points over the right period. Use projections for the current week if you need an immediate starter, or compare future weeks and rest-of-season projections if you are building depth. Consider the player as a starter and as a bench addition.
- Account for your roster and acquisition cost. Weigh lineup slots, bye weeks, bench depth, the player you would drop, and the waiver priority or bid the pickup would consume.
Why targets and routes are a strong starting point
A receiver needs chances to produce, so repeated targets and consistent route participation are more informative than one unusually productive game. In a 2026 NFL.com article looking back at the 2025 season, Matt Okada wrote, “Volume is king in fantasy football.” He noted that all five wideouts with 150-plus targets finished among the top six fantasy receivers; George Pickens was the stated outlier, with 137 targets. That is a historical association from one season, not proof that a target threshold guarantees future fantasy success. NFL.com’s 2026 fantasy draft tips
For waiver decisions, look for a pattern rather than treating any single stat as a rule. A receiver’s target share can show whether his involvement is growing, while yards per route run can help explain what he has done with his routes. Neither metric alone establishes that the role will continue.

How to separate a temporary replacement from a lasting pickup
Injuries can create a valuable short-term opening, but the value may shrink when a teammate returns. Before spending a high waiver claim or a large share of your FAAB, ask who is absent, how long the receiver’s increased role is expected to last, and whether the player has a meaningful role when the lineup is healthy.
NFL.com’s Week 4, 2026 waiver article used Mack Hollins as an example of a short-term option while A.J. Brown was out. That example illustrates the need to connect a player’s opportunity to the injury context; it is not a current recommendation or a forecast for another week. The same article discussed Kalif Raymond using recent production alongside target share and yards per route run. Those are dated examples, not current rankings or universal cutoffs. How scoring settings change receiver value
Check your league’s scoring before comparing projections. In a points-per-reception (PPR) league, receptions add points directly; standard scoring does not award that reception point. Half-PPR awards half a point per reception. That difference can affect how you compare receivers whose value comes from frequent catches versus fewer, higher-yardage plays.

How to compare projections with your roster needs
Projection tools can help turn a general preference into a roster-specific decision. NFL.com’s Best Available feature uses projections to show the point difference when a player is added as a starter or bench option. It also lets users view projections for this week, a future week, the rest of the season or the playoffs. These comparisons are most useful when you select the period and lineup role that match your need; a strong rest-of-season projection does not necessarily solve a one-week lineup gap. NFL Fantasy Best Available
Make the comparison against the player you would actually start or drop, not an abstract league-wide ranking. A receiver can be worth adding for depth even if he is not currently projected to beat your starter, while a one-week replacement may be useful when a bye or injury leaves a lineup spot open.

How waiver availability and timing work
Availability labels affect when you can make the move. On NFL Fantasy, a free agent can be added immediately, while a player on waivers must wait until the league’s waiver period ends. Other fantasy platforms and custom leagues may use different deadlines and priority systems, so check the rules in your league before planning a claim. NFL Fantasy instructions for adding a player
Before submitting a claim or dropping someone, verify the player’s status, your league’s deadline, and the effect on your waiver priority or FAAB budget. Use your platform’s current player list: player availability, injuries, projections and roles can change quickly.

A quick decision checklist
- Is the receiver running routes and earning targets repeatedly, or did one game drive his appeal?
- Does his target share or yards per route run support the case for his involvement?
- Is the opportunity likely to remain after an injured teammate returns?
- Do his projections fit your scoring format and the week or season horizon you need?
- Would you use him as a starter, a bench option, or neither—and which rostered player would he replace?
- What waiver priority, FAAB, or roster flexibility are you spending, and when can the player actually be added?
