Often, yes—but age alone doesn’t determine compatibility. Your older smartwatch needs to support the new phone’s operating system, and you may need the right companion app or a particular phone brand. Check compatibility for the exact watch model and the features you rely on: pairing successfully does not guarantee every function will work.
Check compatibility before switching
Start with the watch’s exact model or generation, the new phone model and operating-system version, and your country or region. Then check the manufacturer’s compatibility page and the current requirements for its companion app. Confirm both that the watch can pair and that the features you care about are supported.

Requirements differ even within one product family. Samsung’s U.S. compatibility chart, for example, lists Android 11 or later for Galaxy Watch7 and Watch Ultra, Android 8.0 or later for Watch5, and Android 6.0 or later for Watch4. Those are model-specific examples, not universal smartwatch requirements. Samsung also notes that region, carrier, and model can affect compatibility. The companion app has its own requirements, which can change over time. Garmin Connect’s listed requirements are currently iOS 18.2 or later, or Android 9 or later with native Google Play support. Garmin warns that using an unsupported operating-system version can limit app functionality; check the current listing before switching. Garmin Connect compatibility

What to check beyond basic pairing
- Phone platform: Some watches work only with certain phone operating systems or brands. Samsung says newer Galaxy Watches running Wear OS are not compatible with iOS; some older Galaxy Watch and Gear models support specified iPhone and iOS combinations.
- Companion app: Use the app specified for that watch generation. Samsung directs compatible Galaxy Watch owners to Galaxy Wearable. Google says Wear OS 3 watches do not use the Wear OS app, and Galaxy Watch4 series watches have their own setup instructions. Google Wear OS setup
- Feature limits: A watch may connect to a non-Samsung Android phone but lack some Samsung-specific options. Samsung’s examples include Samsung Health Monitor features that require a Samsung phone. Check the feature list, not just the basic compatibility entry. Samsung Galaxy smart watch and phone compatibility
- Data transfer: Pairing does not by itself establish that settings, health records, or activity history have transferred. Check the maker’s backup and restore guidance before removing the old pairing.
Move the watch to the new phone
- Record the exact devices and software. Find the watch model, phone model, phone operating-system version, and region. Check the manufacturer’s current compatibility page and companion-app requirements.
- Back up or sync data first. For Apple Watch, Apple recommends backing up the old iPhone. Health data must be synced with iCloud for an iCloud transfer, or included in an encrypted computer backup. Apple: Transfer your Apple Watch to a new iPhone
- Remove the old pairing when possible. Follow the watch maker’s instructions rather than relying only on the phone’s Bluetooth menu. Google says a Wear OS watch can connect to only one phone at a time. Garmin advises removing the watch from Garmin Connect and the old phone’s Bluetooth settings where possible, then switching off the old phone so it does not reclaim the connection. Garmin: Pair your watch with a new phone
- Install the correct app on the new phone. Add the watch through that app’s setup flow. If the old phone is unavailable, follow the manufacturer’s recovery instructions; you may need to reset the watch.
- Confirm the result. Check that the app shows the watch as connected and synced, then test the specific notifications, health features, and other functions you depend on.
Platform-specific steps and limits
Apple Watch: moving to a new iPhone
Apple’s transfer instructions cover moving an Apple Watch to a new iPhone; they do not establish that an Apple Watch can pair with an Android phone. Apple’s process requires the Apple Account and password and watch passcode, Wi-Fi on both iPhones, and at least 50% charge on the watch and new iPhone. Apple recommends updating the old iPhone and watch and backing up the iPhone before transfer. Keep the unlocked watch on your wrist near the new iPhone and use the Apple Watch app to complete setup. Apple: Transfer your Apple Watch to a new iPhone
For Health and Activity data, make sure Health is enabled in iCloud or use an encrypted computer backup. If the old iPhone is unavailable but the watch is still paired to it, Apple’s recovery guidance says to erase the watch, set up the new iPhone and sign in to iCloud, then pair again and try restoring the most recent watch backup. Changes made since that backup may be lost. Apple says Health and Activity data stored in iCloud updates across devices using the same Apple Account; Activity Sharing is not stored in iCloud. Use Samsung’s chart for the exact watch generation and phone platform. Its U.S. page distinguishes older models from newer Wear OS models and lists model-specific Android and RAM requirements. The page says newer Galaxy Watches running Wear OS are not compatible with iOS, while some older Galaxy Watch and Gear models support specified iPhone and iOS combinations. Wear OS
Google says setup steps vary by manufacturer, device, and software version. Wear OS 3 watches do not use the Wear OS app; Galaxy Watch4 series owners should use the setup steps for that device. Garmin
Garmin’s suggested switch involves removing the watch from Garmin Connect and the old phone’s Bluetooth settings if possible, then turning off the old phone. On the new phone, remove any stale Bluetooth entry, install Garmin Connect, choose Add Device, put the watch into pairing mode, and follow the app prompts. Check Garmin Connect’s current operating-system requirements as well as any needs specific to your watch. Garmin: Pair your watch with a new phone · Garmin Connect compatibility

Look for the manufacturer’s recovery procedure for your exact model; the watch may remain locked to its previous pairing until it is removed or reset. Apple’s instructions for an Apple Watch still paired to an unavailable iPhone call for erasing the watch, pairing it with the new iPhone, and trying to restore a watch backup. Restore availability does not mean every recent change is recoverable. Apple: If you can’t pair an Apple Watch with your iPhone

For a Wear OS watch, account for the one-phone-at-a-time limit. For Garmin, remove stale Bluetooth entries on the new phone and prevent the old phone from reconnecting if you can. If you cannot access the old phone, use the watch maker’s instructions rather than assuming a factory reset will preserve data.
