How Windows Search Indexing Works and What It Includes

Windows Search indexes file properties and, optionally, file contents. See what Classic and Enhanced cover, how to change file-type settings, and what Copilot+ semantic indexing supports.

Windows Search builds a local catalog of file names, properties and—when enabled for a file type—the text inside files. Searching that catalog is faster than making Windows inspect every file from scratch each time. You can choose which locations are covered and whether supported file types contribute content as well as properties.

How does indexing make Windows searches faster?

Windows Search maintains an index, a catalog of information about files on your device. Instead of reopening and examining every file for each search, Windows can look up words and common properties in that catalog. Microsoft describes it as similar to an index in a book: it helps a PC and its apps find content by terms or properties such as a file’s creation date. Microsoft Support’s Windows Search indexing FAQ says the index updates in the background as files change. The first indexing run can take up to a couple of hours; later work covers changed data, and the time on a particular PC can vary.

What information does Windows Search index?

By default, Windows indexes file properties, including filenames and full paths. For file types set to include content, it also indexes text inside those files. This distinction matters: a properties-only setting leaves a filename searchable but does not make words in the file searchable.

Microsoft gives a rule of thumb that the index is less than 10 percent of the size of the indexed files. This is not a guarantee: the index can take a much larger proportion when a collection contains many very small files (under 4 KB) or computer code. Microsoft’s FAQ does not display a publication year for this estimate.

Which locations are included: Classic or Enhanced?

Windows 11 offers two indexing scopes. Classic starts with common personal folders, while Enhanced covers a broader set of locations across the PC. You can add or exclude locations, so actual coverage depends on your choices as well as each file type’s content setting.

Mode Default coverage What to expect
Classic Documents, Pictures, Music and the desktop A narrower default scope; searches may not include files stored elsewhere unless you add those locations.
Enhanced The whole PC, including user folders and files Broader coverage and potentially more complete results across locations; it may use more system resources.

To change the mode or locations, open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows. Choose Classic or Enhanced, then review the available location controls. Labels and navigation can vary by Windows version and language.

Can I choose how much of a file is indexed?

Yes. For a listed file type, Windows can index properties only or properties and content. Properties-only indexing generally keeps the index smaller, but searches for words that appear only inside a file will not find it. Including content makes those words searchable, at the cost of indexing more information.

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
  2. Open Advanced indexing options, then select Advanced.
  3. Open the File Types tab, choose a listed type, and select Properties Only or Properties and File Contents.

The available controls apply to the file types shown there. A file’s location must also be included in the index for its indexed properties or content to help a search.

Which file types can be indexed?

For ordinary Windows Search, the file-type list in Advanced indexing options determines whether Windows indexes properties alone or properties and content. The set of types and controls shown can vary; Microsoft’s guidance does not establish one universal list for every Windows build.

Additional semantic search on Copilot+ PCs

Microsoft documents semantic indexing on Copilot+ PCs in addition to traditional indexing. For documents, its listed formats are .txt, .pdf, .docx, .doc, .rtf, .pptx, .ppt, .xls and .xlsx. For images, it lists .jpg/.jpeg, .png, .gif, .bmp and .ico. Semantic results can find related concepts as well as literal matches—for example, Microsoft gives “pasta” returning “lasagna.” This does not mean every format or language receives the same semantic behavior.

Microsoft lists improved semantic-plus-lexical results for English (US, Canada, Australia and UK), French (France and Canada), German, Spanish (Spain and Mexico), Japanese, and Simplified Chinese under its stated matching conditions. Other language combinations continue to use traditional lexical search. The semantic-index data is stored locally on the PC—or locally to Cloud PC storage on AI-enabled Windows 365 devices—and Microsoft says it is not stored by Microsoft or used to train AI models. Microsoft says the feature is enabled by default on Copilot+ PCs and recommends plugging in the PC to complete initial indexing. See Microsoft’s indexing FAQ for its documented formats and language conditions.

Where should I search for a file?

You can search from the taskbar or File Explorer. Taskbar file results may include files across the PC and OneDrive. In File Explorer, search from Home or search within a selected drive or folder; the latter is useful when you want to narrow the search location. Microsoft’s file-finding guidance covers these entry points. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so these instructions foreground Windows 11.
