Yes. An eSIM-only iPhone can work abroad if the phone supports eSIM, your carrier or travel provider supports the plan, and that plan works on networks at your destination. You can either roam with your usual carrier or use a travel eSIM from a local carrier or worldwide provider. To install an eSIM from a different carrier, your iPhone must be unlocked.
Check these things before you travel
- Confirm eSIM support for your exact iPhone. Apple’s general guidance covers iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and later models, but regional and model exceptions apply. Verify your model and make sure the carrier supports eSIM for the plan you want to use. Apple’s international eSIM guidance and its carrier and worldwide provider directory are useful starting points.
- Check whether the phone is unlocked. Go to Settings > General > About and look for “No SIM Restrictions” next to Carrier Lock. You need an unlocked iPhone to use an eSIM from a carrier other than the one that locked the phone.
- Confirm service in your destination. Check that the plan covers the country or region you are visiting and that the iPhone model supports the cellular bands used there. A provider appearing in Apple’s directory does not guarantee that every one of its plans works in every destination.
- Arrange a way to activate the plan. Apple says an iPhone generally needs Wi-Fi or a hotspot for eSIM activation, although exceptions apply in some countries and regions. Check your provider’s instructions and arrange connectivity before depending on airport Wi-Fi.
- Compare the actual plan terms. Ask your current carrier whether roaming is included or whether it offers a travel pass. For a travel eSIM, check destination coverage, data allowance, speed terms, price, activation requirements, and whether voice, SMS, or a local number is included. There is no universally cheapest choice established by these sources.
Choose how you’ll connect

Keep your regular number while using a travel eSIM
Supported iPhones can keep two eSIMs active at the same time. That can let you leave your home line on while using a travel eSIM for mobile data. Set the data line at Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data.

Keeping the home eSIM active can also mean it incurs roaming charges, even when the travel eSIM is selected for data. Check your home carrier’s terms before departure. If you turn off or do not use the home line, Apple says FaceTime and iMessage continue to work on that line; do not assume ordinary cellular calls or SMS to your home number will work without the home line and the carrier service it requires. Set up the travel eSIM and handle roaming problems
On iOS 26
Apple describes a travel-specific setup flow in iOS 26 that may prompt you to activate the travel eSIM on arrival and choose Travel eSIM Only or Travel eSIM and Current eSIM. If both lines remain on, the travel eSIM is used for data, but the home eSIM may still incur roaming fees. On return, iOS 26 may turn off the travel eSIM and restore the home line, depending on your country or region; check that your primary line is turned on. These behaviors vary by iOS version and region. Follow the current instructions from Apple and your provider.

If cellular roaming does not connect
- Check your carrier’s instructions and make sure the plan includes service where you are.
- Review the iPhone’s data roaming settings. Before enabling roaming, confirm with your carrier whether charges may apply.
- If your carrier’s instructions allow it, turn Airplane Mode on for about 30 seconds, then turn it off so the iPhone can select a network again. Apple includes this step in its roaming troubleshooting guidance.
