Remote NAS access lets you reach services on your network-attached storage device from a phone, computer, or other internet-connected device outside the network where the NAS is installed. To make that work, the NAS needs an internet connection and an access path configured through a vendor service, router rules, or a VPN.
What remote NAS access means
A NAS (network-attached storage) is a device that stores files and provides services over a network. Remote access means connecting to one of those services from outside the NAS’s local network. Depending on the method and permissions, you might reach a file app, photo library, management interface, or other supported service.
Synology defines external access as “the ability to remotely access your Synology NAS from any device with an internet connection” in its NAS External Access Quick Start Guide, updated June 4, 2026. That definition is specific to Synology’s guide, but describes the general idea.
Remote access is not simply a feature switched on in the NAS: the NAS must be online, a route to it must be configured, and the service you want to use must be permitted. The connection may travel directly to your network or through a vendor’s relay, depending on the method and network conditions.

Three ways to connect to a NAS remotely
Vendor connection services
A vendor service provides an ID, account, or link that supported clients use to find and connect to a NAS. It can reduce the amount of manual router configuration, though available apps and connection behavior vary by manufacturer.
Synology QuickConnect is one example. In Synology’s documented setup, an administrator enables QuickConnect in DSM, signs in to or registers a Synology Account, selects an available QuickConnect ID, and then uses that ID in a browser or supported mobile app. Synology says QuickConnect uses LAN/WAN detection to select a connection method and may use its relay service if a direct connection cannot be established. Its documentation also describes controls for which applications are accessible and says end-to-end encryption applies when SSL is enabled. See Synology’s setup guide, DSM 7.4 network and external-access specification, and QuickConnect white paper; implementation details can change with software versions.

QNAP’s myQNAPcloud Link is another vendor-specific example. QNAP describes it as a way to access a NAS remotely without changing router settings and recommends it or QVPN when port forwarding is disabled. These services are not interchangeable by default: check what your NAS model, software version, and chosen app support.
DDNS and port forwarding
Dynamic DNS (DDNS) gives you a hostname that points to your network’s external IP address, so you do not have to keep track of a changing numeric address. Port forwarding is a separate router rule: it directs incoming traffic on a specified external port to a particular device and service inside your network. They are commonly used together, but DDNS alone does not open a path through the router.

Synology’s external-access guide gives a DDNS hostname followed by a colon and service port as an example. For DSM, it lists default ports 5000 for HTTP and 5001 for HTTPS. Those are Synology- and service-specific examples, not universal NAS port numbers. Router settings and capabilities differ, and an ISP or router change may require you to update external-access settings. Consult the instructions for your exact NAS and router rather than copying a port rule from another setup.
VPN access
A virtual private network (VPN) creates a protected connection path from a remote device into a private network. Once connected, the device can reach network resources allowed by the VPN’s configuration and permissions. This can let you access a NAS without forwarding each NAS service separately, but it requires a VPN server or gateway, client configuration, and access controls.

Synology lists VPN among its network options. QNAP identifies QVPN as a remote-access option when port forwarding is disabled. The details depend on how the VPN endpoint and routing are configured; having a VPN app alone does not automatically make the NAS reachable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How the methods differ
| Method | Setup and connection path | What you can reach | Security consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vendor connection service | Often avoids manual router configuration; may require a vendor account, device ID, and supported client. The service may choose a direct route or use a relay. | Services and apps supported by the vendor feature and allowed by the administrator. | Not forwarding ports does not remove the need for strong accounts, current software, and carefully chosen service permissions. |
| DDNS plus port forwarding | Uses a hostname or stable external address and a router rule directing selected incoming traffic to the NAS. | The specific service or services mapped by the forwarding rules. | Forwarding makes selected services reachable from outside. QNAP warns that port forwarding can be vulnerable to cyberattacks and advises against unprotected direct internet exposure. |
| VPN | Requires a VPN server or gateway and a remote client configured to connect to the private network. | Network resources allowed by VPN routing and access policy. | It avoids forwarding each NAS service, but the VPN endpoint, accounts, software, and permissions still need secure configuration and maintenance. |
This comparison reflects manufacturer documentation, not an independent security test or speed benchmark. The best fit depends on what you need to reach, your comfort with network configuration, and which services you are prepared to expose or route.

How to choose a method
- Choose a vendor service if you want a guided setup and your NAS’s supported apps meet your needs. Confirm the available access controls and whether a relay may be involved.
- Consider a VPN if you want remote access to permitted resources on your private network and can maintain the VPN endpoint and its accounts.
- Use DDNS and forwarding only deliberately. This approach gives you control over which services and ports are routed, but requires correct router rules and a clear understanding of what becomes reachable from the internet.
Security checks before enabling remote access
Remote access changes which devices or services can be reached from outside your home or office. Decide what needs to be available before choosing a method, and avoid enabling access to services you do not use.
- Install current firmware and follow the security guidance for your NAS model and software version.
- Use strong, unique account credentials and protect the accounts used to administer remote access.
- Allow only the applications, services, and users that need access; review those permissions periodically.
- Check the router’s actual forwarding rules and other exposure settings rather than assuming that a vendor service or VPN has disabled them.
- Use encrypted connections where supported and verify the relevant setting. Synology’s QuickConnect documentation says end-to-end encryption applies when SSL is enabled; do not assume that detail applies to other vendors or configurations.
QNAP identifies internet-borne malware and ransomware as NAS security risks and recommends myQNAPcloud Link or QVPN with port forwarding disabled. It also advises checking whether devices are exposed to the internet. Synology documents QuickConnect application permissions and an auto-block feature that blocks IP addresses after too many failed login attempts. These are vendor-specific recommendations and controls, not a guarantee that any remote-access setup is risk-free. See QNAP Product Security, its NAS security best-practices FAQ, and Synology’s external-access guide and network specification.
Quick Recap
Common points of confusion
- DDNS is not port forwarding. DDNS supplies a name for your external address; the router rule determines whether and where a particular incoming connection goes.
- Remote access does not mean every NAS feature is available everywhere. The method, supported client, permissions, and network routing determine what you can use.
- A vendor relay is not the same as a direct connection. QuickConnect may use a relay when its connection procedure cannot reach the NAS directly, according to Synology’s white paper.
- Port numbers are not universal. Synology’s DSM examples of 5000 for HTTP and 5001 for HTTPS do not establish the right ports for another NAS, service, or configuration.
