Yes, but an original Apple-1 is a bare computer board, not a ready-to-use desktop. It can still run its monitor and Integer BASIC, yet you must supply a compatible ASCII keyboard, composite-video display, power arrangement and, for convenient software storage, an Apple Cassette Interface. Those parts are scarce or technically demanding, so most people are better served by an Apple-1 replica, FPGA recreation or emulator.

This guide explains what each route can do, which peripherals are compatible, how software is loaded, and how to choose between historical authenticity and practical everyday use.

What you can still do with an Apple-1

The Apple-1 remains usable because its core software and hardware behavior are documented. An original board can start its monitor, accept commands from a suitable keyboard and run Integer BASIC programs. The 1977 Integer BASIC release is attributed to Steve Wozniak, and preserved software archives support running programs either in an emulator or on a real machine.

“Usable” does not mean plug-and-play. The computer was sold as a mainboard. Apple did not provide a case, keyboard or power supply, so a working system is an assembly of the board and several external components. A complete setup also needs a display connection and a way to load or save programs.

  • Original board: authentic hardware, but dependent on scarce compatible peripherals, careful restoration and electrical work.
  • Replica or FPGA recreation: a closer physical experience using more available modern parts, with compatibility depending on the specific design.
  • Emulator: the lowest-risk way to learn WozMon and Integer BASIC or run software images on a current computer.

These options preserve the Apple-1 programming model to different degrees. The right choice depends on whether your priority is historical ownership, hands-on electronics, software compatibility or simply experimenting with the machine’s environment.

What an original Apple-1 needs

The mainboard is only the starting point

The Apple-1 Registry describes the original as a mainboard supplied without the surrounding equipment a modern computer buyer expects. You must provide the input, video, power and storage portions of the system yourself. This is why a board that appears complete in photographs may still be unusable until its interfaces and external hardware are identified.

Keyboard input

An original Apple-1 expects an ASCII-style keyboard interface. A contemporary USB keyboard is not automatically compatible: USB is a modern protocol, while the Apple-1’s interface and electrical requirements belong to its original design era. You need an interface arrangement documented for the particular board or replica you are using.

Replica projects sometimes add a PS/2 keyboard interface or another modern keyboard adapter. That convenience is design-specific, not a universal Apple-1 feature. Check the replica’s schematic, connector type and firmware requirements before buying a keyboard or adapter.

Video output

The Apple-1 produces composite video. A compatible composite monitor is the simplest match. HDMI cannot be connected directly to an original board; it requires a documented conversion path that accepts the board’s composite signal and produces a stable HDMI output.

Conversion hardware introduces another compatibility point. Verify the signal standard supported by the converter, the connector wiring and whether the converter is known to work with an Apple-1-style composite output. A generic video cable alone does not perform this conversion.

Power and enclosure

Apple did not supply the original machine with a power supply or case. Any restoration therefore has to identify a safe power arrangement and protect the exposed board. Do not assume that a modern computer power brick is suitable simply because its plug fits. The electrical requirements must be established from the board documentation and the restoration plan.

Replica kits vary in how much of this work is completed. Some are bare printed circuit boards, while others include assembled boards, connectors, keyboard interfaces or enclosure parts. Treat “kit” as an assembly category rather than a guarantee of a ready-to-run computer.

Storage through the cassette interface

Period software workflows centered on cassette loading and saving. The Apple Cassette Interface provides the bridge between the computer and audio storage. You need compatible interface hardware and a playback or recording path; the bare board does not contain a modern file system or built-in solid-state storage.

Which software still runs?

WozMon

WozMon is the Apple-1 monitor used for low-level interaction with memory and machine code. It is the first environment many users encounter after the board or emulator starts. Because it works at the monitor level, it is useful for checking that keyboard input, display output and memory access are functioning before attempting to load a larger program.

Integer BASIC

Integer BASIC is the Apple-1’s principal high-level programming environment. Programs written for it can run on a real Apple-1 or in an emulator that implements the Apple-1 memory map and processor behavior. “Integer” refers to the numeric model used by the language; software written for later, incompatible BASIC dialects should not be assumed to work unchanged.

Software preservation

Apple-1 operating and programming materials remain available as scans through SB-Projects, including the Apple-1 manual, BASIC manual and cassette-interface manual. These scans are valuable when you need the original command syntax, connector information or loading procedure rather than a modern summary.

When choosing software, distinguish between a program listing, an audio cassette image and a disk image. They represent different loading paths. A text listing may require manual entry or conversion, while an audio image can be played through a cassette workflow and a disk image requires an emulator or hardware that implements the relevant disk system.

How Apple-1 emulators reproduce the experience

Current emulator projects model the MOS 6502 processor, WozMon and Integer BASIC. Some document cycle-accurate CPU behavior, Apple Cassette Interface audio and optional Disk II support. Cycle accuracy matters when software depends on timing rather than merely producing the same final output.

An emulator replaces the original board’s electrical risks with configuration work. You still need to understand which keyboard mapping is active, how the display is represented and which image format the emulator accepts, but you do not need to locate a period composite monitor or build a power system.

A practical emulator workflow

  1. Choose an emulator with explicit Apple-1 support. Confirm that its documentation names the MOS 6502, WozMon and Integer BASIC rather than only offering a generic 6502 mode.
  2. Install the emulator for your operating system. Use the project’s documented release or build instructions and note whether it requires separate ROM, monitor or BASIC image files.
  3. Set the keyboard mapping. Map the emulator’s input keys to the Apple-1 character set. Test letters, numbers, the return key and any control functions used by the monitor.
  4. Start the machine and verify the monitor prompt. Enter a harmless memory inspection command before loading software. A missing prompt usually indicates a configuration or image problem, not a BASIC program error.
  5. Load a known-good Integer BASIC example. Use the image format supported by the emulator. If the project supports cassette audio, select its cassette input function; if it supports disk images, mount the documented disk format instead.
  6. Save your working configuration. Record emulator version, image files, keyboard settings and any timing options so that a program can be reopened consistently.

Emulation is also the safest way to learn the manuals. You can practice monitor commands and BASIC syntax before connecting fragile historical hardware.

How loading from cassette works today

The cassette method remains conceptually simple: the Apple-1 sends or receives audio tones through the Apple Cassette Interface, and the program is reconstructed from that signal. The modern challenge is supplying a clean, compatible audio path.

  1. Obtain the correct program representation. Use an Apple-1 cassette audio file or another format explicitly supported by your hardware or emulator. A disk image is not automatically a cassette recording.
  2. Connect the playback or recording device. On original hardware, follow the cassette-interface manual and the interface documentation for the replica. On an emulator, select the project’s cassette input or audio-file option.
  3. Set conservative audio levels. Excessive volume can distort the signal; insufficient volume can make transitions unreadable. Use the level guidance supplied for the interface you are using.
  4. Start the Apple-1 load command before playback. The machine must be waiting for the incoming data when the audio begins.
  5. Wait for the transfer to finish, then verify the program. Run a small test or list the loaded program before changing cables or settings. This separates a successful transfer from a program that merely appears to have loaded.
  6. For saving, record the Apple-1 output in the required format. Keep the original recording unchanged and make copies for experimentation.

Emulators that implement Apple Cassette Interface audio can use audio files without a physical tape deck. Projects with optional Disk II support provide a separate disk-image workflow; do not mix disk and cassette instructions.

Original board, replica, FPGA recreation or emulator?

Route What you get Work involved Best fit Main limitation
Original Apple-1 Historical Apple hardware and its original programming model Restoration, compatible power, ASCII keyboard, composite video and storage interfaces Collectors and restorers who value authenticity Scarce peripherals and higher electrical risk
Replica kit A physical Apple-1-compatible board built with modernly available parts Varies from soldering and testing to fitting an enclosure and configuring adapters Hands-on users seeking a practical physical machine Compatibility, included parts and documentation differ by project
FPGA recreation Apple-1 behavior implemented in programmable logic, often with modern interfaces Board setup, keyboard/video configuration and project-specific firmware Users comfortable with digital hardware who want flexible interfaces Not every recreation implements identical peripherals or timing
Desktop or browser emulator Software implementation of the 6502, WozMon, Integer BASIC and storage workflows Install, configure keyboard and mount software images Learning, testing and running programs with minimal risk No original electrical or physical experience

There is no single “best” Apple-1 replica kit. Compare assembly level, included power and video hardware, keyboard interface, cassette support, enclosure options, documentation, software compatibility and community support. A kit that includes a PS/2 interface may be convenient, while another may preserve the original connector arrangement more closely.

Peripheral compatibility checklist

Component Original Apple-1 requirement Modern substitute What to verify
Keyboard ASCII-style keyboard interface Documented adapter or replica-provided PS/2 interface Electrical interface, connector, key mapping and firmware
Display Composite video Composite monitor or documented composite-to-HDMI converter Signal support, wiring and converter compatibility
Storage Apple Cassette Interface for cassette workflows Audio file in an emulator, cassette-compatible accessory or supported disk image Image format and whether the chosen implementation supports cassette, disk or both
Power Owner-supplied power arrangement Replica-specific supply or documented regulated arrangement Voltage, polarity, current capacity and safe connection method
Enclosure None supplied Replica case or custom protection Board dimensions, ventilation, connector access and insulation

Common problems and how to diagnose them

No prompt or blank display

  • Confirm that the board or emulator is actually running and that the display path matches composite video requirements.
  • Check connector wiring before changing software settings.
  • On an emulator, verify that the monitor or ROM image expected by the project is installed and selected.

Keys produce the wrong characters

  • Check whether the keyboard is ASCII-compatible and whether an adapter is required.
  • On a replica, confirm the project’s keyboard mode, firmware and connector pinout.
  • In an emulator, review key mapping and test return and control keys separately.

Cassette loads fail

  • Make sure the image is a cassette audio representation, not a disk image or text listing.
  • Start the load command before playback and adjust the audio level within the interface’s documented range.
  • Use a known-good short program to isolate cabling and signal problems from a damaged program file.

A BASIC program will not run

  • Confirm that the emulator or hardware is running Apple-1 Integer BASIC rather than a later BASIC dialect.
  • Check that the complete program loaded and that it was not truncated during cassette transfer.
  • For machine-code examples, verify that the program’s expected memory locations match the environment you selected.

A replica does not behave like an original

“Apple-1 compatible” can describe different implementation goals. Some replicas prioritize original connectors, while others add PS/2 keyboards, modern video adapters or alternate storage. Compare the project documentation against the specific software and peripherals you plan to use instead of assuming that every Apple-1 feature is implemented identically.

Which path makes sense for most people?

Start with an emulator if your goal is to learn WozMon, study Integer BASIC or run preserved software. It avoids the original board’s power and video challenges and lets you validate software images before investing in hardware.

Choose a replica or FPGA recreation when you want physical interaction, keyboard and display wiring, or electronics assembly without depending on a rare historical board. Treat the project’s documentation as the compatibility contract: it should state the supported keyboard, video output, storage method, power arrangement and assembly requirements.

Choose an original Apple-1 only when authenticity justifies the restoration effort and you can safely provide the missing peripherals. Preserve the board, manuals and working configuration together, because replacing one undocumented interface can be more difficult than replacing a modern computer component.
