Yes. Apple says you can use a higher-wattage USB-C power adapter with an iPhone. The iPhone draws power according to its charging requirements, so a larger wattage rating alone does not guarantee faster charging. For the fastest wired charging Apple documents, check your iPhone model and use a compatible adapter and cable.
How to choose the right USB-C charger
Start with the exact iPhone model: Apple’s fast-charge requirements differ across models. Use a USB-C adapter with the required output and a cable that meets the model’s specifications. Apple says its iPad and Mac notebook USB power adapters can charge iPhone, and compatible third-party adapters are also an option. For comparable third-party fast charging, Apple identifies USB Power Delivery (USB-PD) as the relevant support.

Apple’s adapter guidance says third-party power adapters should comply with applicable country regulations and international and regional safety standards. Its published recommendations include:

| iPhone models | Adapter requirement for Apple-documented fast charging | Cable requirement |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air | At least 40W output. Apple’s example is its 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max. | Use a compatible USB-C charge cable; the cited guidance does not state a specific cable wattage for these models. |
| iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max | 60W-or-higher AVS adapter. | Apple recommends a 60W-rated cable. |
| Other iPhone models | Check Apple’s model-specific fast-charge guidance; the wattage requirements above should not be assumed to apply. | Check the requirements for the exact model. |
Apple’s model-specific requirements and examples are in its Fast charge your iPhone guidance. Its broader Power adapters for iPhone guide covers compatible Apple and third-party adapters. If buying a charger, compare USB-PD support, output for your model, cable rating and connector, safety compliance, and whether power is shared across ports.

What charging speed to expect
Apple says iPhone 8 or later can reach around 50% battery in about 30 minutes under its stated fast-charge test conditions. For iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max, Apple states around 50% in about 20 minutes with a 40W-or-higher adapter. These are Apple test claims, not guaranteed times: the company says actual charging times vary with conditions and identifies specific test setups in its guidance.
A charger with a higher maximum output than your iPhone needs can still be used, but the wattage printed on the adapter is not a promise that the phone will accept that much power or charge faster. Model compatibility, cable, and charging conditions all matter.

Why a high-wattage charger may still charge slowly
- Power is shared: When several devices are connected to a multiport charger, the power available to the iPhone can be reduced.
- You are using an intermediary: Charging through a computer or USB hub can provide less power than a suitable wall adapter.
- The charger or cable does not meet the model’s requirements: A high wattage rating by itself does not establish USB-PD support, the required output, or an appropriate cable rating.
Apple says iOS 18 and later may display a “Slow Charger” message when a higher-wattage charger could improve charging. With iOS 26, an “Incompatible Charger” message may appear when a connected charger is not charging. Apple explains these messages in If your iPhone is charging slowly or shows a charger alert.
Practical answer
Use the high-wattage USB-C charger if it is compatible with your iPhone; Apple explicitly allows higher-wattage adapters, including Mac laptop adapters. To pursue the fastest wired charging Apple documents, verify your model’s adapter and cable requirements, and use a compatible USB-PD charger where Apple specifies it. Do not choose solely by the charger’s largest wattage number.
