1. Set your target before shopping
Start with items you already plan to buy. Write down the exact model and the details that affect price or fit, such as size, color, capacity, or included accessories. That makes it less likely you’ll mistake a cheaper, differently configured item for a comparable deal.

Use price history when it is available
On eligible Amazon product pages, price history may show 30-, 90-, or 365-day views. Availability and the time ranges shown vary by marketplace and product, so you may not see every view. Open price history from the product detail page if the option appears. Amazon also says shoppers can ask Alexa for Shopping about price history. Compare today’s price with the displayed range, but remember that past prices don’t establish what the item should cost or whether it is the best offer elsewhere.
Understand the reference price

Compare like with like
When the purchase warrants a wider check, compare the same model and configuration at other retailers. Include shipping, any required membership, and add-ons needed to use the product. A different storage size, generation, bundle, or color may not be a fair comparison.

3. Read reviews for patterns, not just a score
Read recent positive and critical reviews that address the way you intend to use the item. Give more weight to recurring, concrete observations than to a single dramatic account or a rating summary that does not answer your question.
- For electronics, look for repeated comments about compatibility, reliability, setup, or a feature you need.

- For any category, ask whether reviewers describe the same use case, model, or configuration you are considering.

4. Verify the return terms for the exact listing
Amazon says free, convenient returns apply to most items delivered in the U.S.; its shopping tips say the FREE Returns badge identifies qualifying products. “Most” does not mean every item, and a general policy page cannot tell you the terms for every seller or listing. Before checkout, confirm the deadline and any conditions that apply. In particular, check whether return shipping is free, what condition the item must be in, and which drop-off or pickup options are available for that order. 5. Use alerts without letting them make the decision
Amazon describes deal alerts and target-price notifications, as well as an Alexa for Shopping auto-buy option for a specified target price. Feature availability may change. An alert can help you monitor an item you already want; an automatic purchase can still happen on an item or terms you have not rechecked. 6. Run this final check before placing the order
- Confirm the exact model, configuration, seller, condition, delivery estimate, and included accessories.
- Compare the current price with any available price history and, when useful, the same item at other retailers.
- Check reviews for repeated specifics related to your intended use.
- Read the listing’s return deadline, condition requirements, fees, and available return methods.
- Order only if the price meets your target and no unresolved review or return concern changes the decision.
