A launcher replaces the home-screen interface; what remains accessible depends on your device, software build, and the launcher. Before replacing the home screen, try the customization controls already available on your TV, then check compatibility for your exact model and test the specific features you care about.
What “losing Google TV features” can mean
A custom launcher changes the interface you see when you go to the home screen. That is different from replacing the TV’s operating system. Still, the home screen is where some Google TV and Android TV functions are presented, so changing it can affect how easily you reach those functions—or whether the replacement provides them at all.

It helps to separate two questions:
- Can the launcher become the home app? This depends on whether your particular device allows it and how that model handles home-screen selection.
- Which functions remain accessible afterward? A replacement may not reproduce the stock home screen’s recommendations, search, Watchlist surfaces, tabs, or other interface elements.
Google’s documentation describes its own Google TV and Android TV experiences; it does not promise that a third-party launcher will duplicate them. Nor does the documentation establish that switching launchers automatically removes every underlying operating-system or app function. The practical answer is therefore model- and implementation-specific, not a blanket yes or no.

What the stock home screen provides
Google’s Android TV help describes a home screen that can include shows and movies in progress, suggested videos, personalized recommendations, and installed apps. Depending on the device, users may be able to add, remove, or reorder channel rows; turn audio or video previews off; configure Discover recommendations; and manage a Watchlist. Google notes that available settings differ among Android TV devices. Its Android TV home-screen customization guide explains the available controls.
Those controls may be enough if your goal is simply to make the existing home screen less crowded or change what it displays. They do not provide every possible layout change, but trying them first avoids relying on a replacement launcher for a problem the stock settings can already solve. Row controls, preview settings, and recommendation options are not guaranteed to be present in the same form on every TV or streaming device, so check the settings on your own model rather than following directions for a different one.
One limit is explicit: Google says its documented controls cannot turn off sponsored suggestions on the Home tab. If those suggestions are the main reason you want another launcher, do not expect the stock customization options to remove them.

Why features can depend on the home experience
Google’s own Apps only mode illustrates that a home-screen choice can change which features are available from that screen. In this mode, the home experience becomes app-oriented, but personalized recommendations are removed from the home screen and Search and Google Assistant are disabled; Google also lists some unavailable Watchlist interactions. This is an example of how Google’s documented home modes differ—not a description of how every custom launcher behaves.

Likewise, Android Developers documents interfaces through which apps can publish recommendations to Android TV home screens. That describes a platform mechanism for recommendations; it does not certify that a particular third-party launcher will show Google’s recommendations or preserve Google TV’s interface. A launcher’s own claims and compatibility notes, for your precise device and software, matter more than assuming that all launchers behave alike.
For that reason, “the launcher works” is not a complete compatibility check. It may mean only that the launcher opens and displays apps. It does not by itself establish that stock recommendations, Search, Assistant, Watchlist access, or other home-screen functions will be available in the same way. The reverse is also important: the available documentation does not say that changing the home app automatically removes every underlying app or account function. Treat access to features such as casting, app installation, or account-based services as something to verify on your device, not as something a launcher either universally preserves or universally removes.

The table describes documented stock options and the limits of what can be assumed about replacements; it is not a compatibility rating for any particular launcher. A useful comparison for your setup is whether the launcher can become the default, which stock functions remain reachable, whether Home-button behavior is reliable, and whether stock customization already meets your goal. If a particular Google TV tab or recommendation surface matters to you, include that specific surface in your comparison instead of relying on a general claim that a launcher “supports Google TV.”

How to decide safely, step by step
- Identify the exact device and software. Record the manufacturer and model, and check the device’s system information for its software version. “Android TV” or “Google TV” alone is not enough to determine which settings and restrictions apply.
- Try the built-in home-screen controls. Open the device’s home-screen settings and consult Google’s customization instructions for channel rows, previews, and recommendations. The names and availability of controls may differ by device. Remember that these documented controls do not switch off Home-tab sponsored suggestions.
- Check compatibility before installing a replacement. Consult the device manufacturer’s instructions and the launcher developer’s current compatibility notes for your exact model and software build. Confirm that the device can select it as the home app without disabling built-in apps. Google’s consumer help does not provide one setup sequence that applies to all Android TV and Google TV devices.
- Decide which functions are essential. Make a short list rather than treating “Google TV features” as one thing: for example, recommendations, Search, Assistant from the remote, Watchlist access, and reliable return to the home screen. Google documents that functions can vary with the home mode, but does not guarantee third-party parity.
- Test the actual device after setup. Check each item on your list, including what happens when you press Home and whether restarting the device changes the selected home experience. A successful launch is not proof that every stock function is retained.
- Reassess if a required function is missing. Check the launcher developer’s guidance and your manufacturer’s instructions for the supported way to change the home app or restore the stock experience. Do not treat package-disabling instructions or ADB commands as universal: the reviewed Google documentation does not establish them as a safe, general procedure.
What to verify after installation
Run through the functions that matter to you individually. The launcher may replace the front door to the device without replacing every app or account function, but the available evidence does not establish what will happen for every model. Treat each item below as a check, not as a promised capability.
- Home button: Does it return to the launcher you selected, including after you leave an app?
- Recommendations: Are the recommendations you want visible somewhere you can still reach, or has the stock recommendation surface been replaced?
- Search: Can you still access the search function you use, and does it behave as expected on this device?
- Assistant: If you use Assistant from the remote, test that specific button and interaction rather than assuming it works because the launcher opens.
- Watchlist: Check how you access the Watchlist and any interactions you rely on; Google documents mode-dependent limitations.
- Restart and return: Restart the device and verify that your home choice and Home-button behavior remain as expected.
If an item fails, the result does not prove that all devices or launchers have the same limitation. It tells you that this combination of device, software, and launcher does not meet that particular requirement as configured. Use the launcher developer’s and manufacturer’s current instructions to investigate; do not assume a setting or workaround from another model applies.

A replacement is worth considering when the layout itself is the main priority, the exact device supports selecting the launcher as its home app, and you are willing to verify the stock functions you depend on. It is a less certain choice if access to Google’s stock recommendations, Search, Assistant, Watchlist surfaces, or a specific Google TV tab is essential and you have not confirmed how that function behaves with the replacement.

If your only aim is to reorder rows, remove some channels, or stop audio and video previews, first check the stock controls. If the aim is to eliminate Home-tab sponsored suggestions, Google’s documented controls do not offer that switch. In either case, make the decision based on the feature you want to change—not on an assumption that a custom launcher preserves the entire Google TV experience.
The practical answer
You may be able to use a custom launcher on an Android TV or Google TV device, but whether it can become the default and which Google home-screen functions remain accessible are specific to the device, software, and launcher. Google does not document universal third-party compatibility or promise that a replacement retains stock features. Try the built-in settings first, check the exact compatibility guidance, and test the functions you actually use before deciding to keep the new home screen.
