An extraction shooter is a game in which you enter a dangerous area to gather loot or pursue objectives, then try to get out with what you collected. In ARC Raiders, a run pits Raiders against hostile machines and potentially other players; surviving long enough to return with your haul is part of the goal, not an optional epilogue to the fighting.
What “extraction shooter” means
There is no single formal definition that every game in the genre follows. The practical idea is a risk-and-reward loop: enter a hazardous map, search for value, and attempt to extract before a threat—or a decision to stay too long—ends the run. Loot only becomes useful for what comes next if you manage to bring it back.

That creates a different measure of success from a conventional team deathmatch. Eliminating an opponent may help, but it does not by itself secure the resources you found. You must also decide how much more to risk and when to leave. A quiet run that ends with a successful return can be more valuable than a string of fights followed by a failed escape.

ARC Raiders applies this loop to a multiplayer adventure set on a lethal future Earth. Raiders leave the underground community of Speranza to scavenge on the surface, where ARC machines and other Raiders may threaten them. The game’s official site describes it as blending extraction-shooter tension with an adventure setting; Steam and PlayStation describe the scavenging, combat, and return-to-progression loop.

How an ARC Raiders run works
- Prepare in Speranza. Before going topside, use the workshop to craft, repair, or upgrade gear. What you take into a raid affects both your capabilities and what you stand to lose if the run goes badly.
- Search the surface and choose your priorities. Scavenge resources and useful equipment, and pursue objectives as you decide what is worth the time and danger. Each additional opportunity can increase the potential haul, but staying out longer also means remaining exposed to threats.
- Respond to machines and other players. ARC machines supply player-versus-environment (PvE) danger. Other Raiders create player-versus-player (PvP) risk. A human encounter might become a fight, a temporary cooperation, or an opportunity to keep clear of one another; you cannot assume every Raider will act the same way.
- Make the extraction decision. Try to leave with the value you have collected rather than treating every encounter as a reason to keep fighting. If a run fails, you can lose carried equipment and miss the chance to bring newly gathered loot home. The exact outcome depends on the game’s rules for the situation; the available launch coverage describes this risk without establishing a complete item-by-item loss table.
- Put returned loot to work. Back in Speranza, loot can support selling, crafting, repairs, workshop improvements, and character progression. That gives a successful extraction value beyond the immediate run: it can help prepare you for later ones.
This is why “getting out” belongs in the genre’s name. Combat, scavenging, and objectives happen during the outing, but extraction is what turns the haul into secured progress. The loop is not simply “win the fight”; it is “judge the risk, collect value, and return if you can.”
Why ARC Raiders is PvPvE
ARC Raiders combines PvE threats with possible PvP encounters. The machines are not just scenery around a player-versus-player contest: they are a separate source of danger, and PlayStation’s overview describes enemies with different strengths and tactics. At the same time, other Raiders can change the risk of a route or a fight.
Noise matters because a battle can draw attention from other players. That makes combat a decision with consequences beyond the enemy in front of you: engaging may cost resources, take time, and alert nearby Raiders. Avoiding a fight may preserve an opportunity to continue scavenging, but it does not remove the machine threat or guarantee a safe route. The sources establish these broad pressures, not a precise sound radius, enemy roster, or formula for how encounters unfold.
The mix also means that “PvPvE” is more informative than calling the game purely PvP or purely PvE. The official site and PlayStation describe both machines and Raiders as threats. The presence of another player does not prove that a fight will happen, while the presence of machines does not mean players are protected from one another.
What is distinctive about the multiplayer experience
Every encounter is not necessarily a firefight
Xbox Wire’s launch preview described sessions that varied from quiet scavenging to repeated firefights, with interactions ranging from friendliness to betrayal. That is a report about the preview experience, not a promise that a particular mix—or any particular social behavior—will appear in every current match. The useful takeaway is that player encounters can be unpredictable, so a plan should account for the possibility of cooperation or conflict rather than treating either as certain.
The cost of a fight includes the risk to the haul
In a match where collected loot and carried equipment are at stake, a fight has a different cost from one in a mode where the only immediate objective is defeating the opposing team. It may consume time or put the run at risk; it can also attract attention. Whether to engage therefore depends on more than whether you think you can win the exchange. Consider what you already have, what you still hope to find, and whether the encounter advances an objective enough to justify putting the run in danger.

Progress continues between raids
The loop is not described as a full reset after each outing. Steam and PlayStation list systems including selling loot, crafting, repairs, workshop station improvements, blueprints, and skills. Returned resources can therefore feed longer-term development as well as the next gear preparation. A failed run may interrupt a plan, but the available descriptions do not support saying that every form of progress is erased when a Raider fails to extract.

Xbox Wire’s launch preview warns that a bad encounter can cost equipment brought into a raid and the opportunity to keep newly found loot. That is the central risk the extraction loop asks players to weigh. It does not establish that every failure removes every carried item, nor does it provide a universal rule for every cause of failure. Treat gear as exposed to risk, but do not assume a more detailed loss rule than the game’s current interface states.
The same preview describes free loadouts as a lower-risk way for new or struggling players to enter a raid, with no risk of loss attached to those loadouts. This can reduce the stakes of a particular entry. It does not make the overall game risk-free: the run still involves surviving threats, and this detail should not be mistaken for a guarantee that every item gathered or every kind of progression is protected.
A practical way to think about the stakes is to distinguish what you bring from what you hope to bring back. A valuable loadout raises the cost of a failed outing; a more conservative entry can limit that exposure. As you collect loot, the potential cost of continuing can rise too. The game’s loop makes that moment of reassessment part of play rather than a purely tactical afterthought.
Can you play ARC Raiders solo?
You can enter as a solo Raider, and the game also supports parties of two or three. Solo entry does not mean an offline campaign or a private world: PlayStation describes the game as online and multiplayer-only. Other players remain part of the wider multiplayer environment, alongside the PvE machines.
For a solo player, the key distinction is between going in alone and being alone in the game. The first is supported; the second is not guaranteed. The sources do not establish a separate solo-only matchmaking pool or promise that solo players will encounter only other solos, so do not infer either from the ability to queue alone.

Is ARC Raiders PvE-only now?
As of October 13, 2026, the official ARC Raiders site says Embark is testing a PvE matchmaking toggle from October 13 at 11:00 CEST through October 20 at 11:00 CEST. This is a limited test window, not confirmation that a permanent PvE-only mode is available. Availability after the stated end time is not established by that announcement.
GamesRadar reported on October 9, 2026, that executive producer Aleksander Grøndal called the test a way to address an ongoing player question and said a future split into PvPvE and PvE experiences was “very possible.” That describes a possibility, not a confirmed roadmap commitment. The test and the reported comment should not be read as proof that the standard experience has permanently changed or that a separate mode will remain after testing.

The label alone does not tell you how punishing or predictable a particular extraction shooter is. For ARC Raiders, the useful questions are how comfortable you are with losing exposed equipment, how much you want to avoid or pursue PvP, how you feel about PvE threats, and whether online play fits your expectations.

Before a run, decide what you are willing to risk and what would make you leave. During the run, update that judgment as you find loot, encounter machines, or hear signs of other players. That is the basic skill the extraction format rewards: not only fighting effectively, but recognizing when the potential value of continuing is outweighed by the value of getting home.

Is ARC Raiders PvP or PvE?
Both. ARC machines are PvE threats, while other Raiders may create PvP risk. The official site announced a limited PvE matchmaking-toggle test for October 13–20, 2026; that does not confirm a permanent PvE-only mode.
Can I play ARC Raiders alone?
Yes, you can enter as a solo Raider, and parties of two or three are also supported. The game remains online multiplayer-only, so solo entry does not mean offline play or a guaranteed solo-only matchmaking pool.
Do you lose gear when you die?
A bad encounter can mean losing equipment brought into the raid and missing the chance to keep newly gathered loot, according to Xbox Wire’s launch preview. It also describes free loadouts as carrying no risk of loss. The preview does not provide a complete item-by-item loss rule.
Does extraction mean escaping the whole game?
No. It means returning from a particular surface run with your haul. You can then use the workshop and settlement systems to prepare for later runs.
Do I need a gaming headset to play?
The reviewed sources do not state that a headset is required. It may be a useful optional accessory for online multiplayer, but they do not establish a best headset for the game.
