If your phone’s location is inaccurate, first check that the affected app has permission to use precise location. Then move to an open area and give the phone several minutes to find satellites. On Android, also check the device’s Location Accuracy setting; on iPhone, check Precise Location and automatic date and time. These checks address the most common settings and reception issues without assuming the phone has a faulty GPS receiver.
A phone’s location is not always GPS alone. Depending on the device and settings, it may combine satellite signals with Wi-Fi, cellular networks, Bluetooth scanning, and sensors. The right fix depends on whether the problem is app access, limited signal visibility, or something other than positioning, such as the map or compass.

Start with what is actually inaccurate
Notice what the phone is doing before changing settings. Does the location dot sit far from where you are, move around while you stand still, or fail to appear? Does the problem occur in one app or several? Does it happen mainly indoors, between tall buildings, or inside a vehicle? These details help separate an app permission issue from limited satellite reception or a problem with the map display.
Keep in mind that a map marker, map data, compass heading, and route calculation are related but distinct. A marker that appears to drift does not by itself prove that the GPS receiver has failed. For example, a displayed map may be slow to update, while a compass heading can point the wrong way even when the position estimate is usable. Test the phone in another location app if possible, and compare its behavior in an open area.

Phone location estimates can draw on GPS, Wi-Fi, cellular signals, Bluetooth, and device sensors, depending on the platform, hardware, settings, and signals available nearby. That mix means a location can still be available when satellite reception is limited, but it also means the term “GPS accuracy” does not describe every part of the location experience.
It helps to record the pattern before troubleshooting: which app is affected, whether the issue is a missing location or a wandering one, and whether it changes when you move outdoors. This simple comparison is more useful than treating every incorrect marker as the same fault. Location sharing and activity tracking also depend on the relevant app being allowed to access location; a phone may have location features enabled while an individual app does not have the access it needs.
Check whether the affected app can use precise location
On iPhone
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and confirm that Location Services is on.
- Select the affected app and review its location access. Apps can have different access levels, including access only while the app is in use or access that continues in the background.
- If the task needs an exact position, confirm that Precise Location is enabled for that app.
Location Services being enabled for the phone does not automatically give every app the same access. Check the specific app that is showing the problem. If you change its permission, return to the app and see whether the location display updates.
Think about what the app is meant to do when reviewing access. A map used only while open may need location while in use, whereas an app intended to share or record location when it is not on screen may need the relevant background access. The available access options differ by app and platform settings. Grant only the access that fits the task, and remember that precise location is a separate choice from simply allowing location access.
On Android 12 and later
Check two separate controls: the app’s precise-location permission and the device’s Location Accuracy setting. The app permission governs whether that app can receive a precise location. Location Accuracy governs whether the device can use additional sources to estimate location. One setting does not replace the other.
Android menu names and paths vary by version and manufacturer, so use the Settings search field for “Location” or “Location Accuracy” if the labels below do not match your phone. In the affected app’s permissions, look for the option to allow precise location. Then check the device-wide Location Accuracy setting. A Wi-Fi-only tablet or another device without GPS hardware may not have the same positioning capabilities as a phone; Android devices do not all share the same hardware or signals.
This distinction is useful when one app works and another does not. If device-wide Location Accuracy is enabled, an app can still be denied precise location. Conversely, allowing an app precise location does not itself turn on every additional source the device may use. Check both controls rather than assuming that one location toggle covers the whole system.

Satellite GPS depends on the phone receiving signals from visible satellites. Apple Support explains that “GPS accuracy depends on the number of visible GPS satellites.” Walls, vehicle roofs, tall buildings, and mountains can obstruct those signals. A clear view in several directions gives the phone a better chance of receiving satellite signals than being deep inside a building or surrounded by high structures.
On supported Android devices with Google Play services, Location Accuracy can combine GPS with nearby Wi-Fi access points, cellular towers, and available sensors such as accelerometers, barometers, and gyroscopes. Apple says Location Services may use mobile data, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth. The available sources vary with the device and surroundings; not every phone has every radio, sensor, or signal source.

| Approach | Where it can help | What it depends on | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Satellite GPS | Outdoors with an unobstructed view of the sky | Visible satellites and enough time to acquire a fix | Buildings, roofs, and terrain can obstruct reception |
| Combined location estimate | Places where satellite reception is limited, including indoors and near large buildings | Supported device features and available Wi-Fi, cellular, Bluetooth, or sensor information | It may provide a location when GPS is obstructed, but it does not make satellite signals pass through a building or guarantee greater accuracy everywhere |
The practical difference is availability versus dependence. Satellite reception is most useful when the phone can see enough satellites, so open sky and time to acquire a fix matter. Combined estimation can help a supported device provide a location where satellite visibility is poor, but it depends on the device and nearby signals or sensors being available. Neither approach is guaranteed to produce the best result in every setting, and the sources do not provide a universal measured improvement for one method over the other.
Think of assisted location as another way for a supported phone to estimate where it is, not as a GPS signal booster. On Android, Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning are separately configurable. Turning Wi-Fi or Bluetooth off is not a universal way to improve GPS accuracy; wireless information may instead help a supported device estimate location when satellite reception is weak. Google documents data collection associated with Location Accuracy, and you can review the platform’s privacy settings if you want to understand or adjust how location features work.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not assume that every Android device can use the same combination of sources. Google’s guidance applies to devices with Google Play services, and it notes that GPS, wireless signals, or sensor data may not be present on every device. Apple’s description likewise includes device-specific distinctions: GPS and cellular location are available on iPhone and iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular models. A Wi-Fi-only tablet should not be expected to have identical location capabilities.
Give the phone a better chance to find satellites
- Move to an open area. If practical, step away from indoor walls, tall buildings, mountains, and vehicle roofs. Try to give the phone an unobstructed view in several directions.
- Wait for the position to settle. A phone may need several minutes to locate visible satellites. Apple Support notes that finding all visible satellites can take several minutes and that accuracy may gradually improve during that time.
- Keep the phone in the open while it acquires a fix. Retest the app after waiting rather than judging its position immediately after moving outside.
- Check again where you intend to use it. A position that is stable in open sky may become less dependable when you go indoors or enter a place where buildings or terrain block signals.
Apple also notes that an iPhone or iPad may use Wi-Fi or mobile networks until GPS satellites are visible again. GPS and cellular location are available on iPhone and iPad Wi-Fi + Cellular models; do not assume that a Wi-Fi-only iPad has the same location hardware. These platform details matter when comparing devices as well as when troubleshooting one.
There is no need to expect an immediate, final position the moment you step outside. Apple’s guidance describes satellite acquisition as taking several minutes in some circumstances, with accuracy gradually improving as visible satellites are located. If a phone has just moved from a heavily obstructed place, wait before deciding the test has failed. Afterward, compare the location in the same app and, if possible, in another location app.
Correct the iPhone’s date, time, and time zone
For an iPhone, open Settings > General > Date & Time, check the date, time, and time zone, and use Set Automatically where possible. This is Apple’s guidance for iPhone location troubleshooting. Do not apply that exact menu path to Android; Android labels and settings depend on the device and software version.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →This is a targeted iPhone check, not a general instruction to change every clock setting on every platform. If the date, time, or time zone is incorrect, correct it using Apple’s automatic option where possible, then test the location again. Avoid using this menu path as though it were universal Android guidance.
Use a focused troubleshooting sequence
Work through the checks in order. Change one relevant setting at a time and test again, so you can tell which change affected the result.
- Check the app. Confirm that the particular map, navigation, sharing, or activity app has location access. Enable precise location for it if the task needs an exact position.
- Check the device-level setting. On Android 12 and later, review Location Accuracy as well as the app’s precise-location permission. On iPhone, confirm Location Services is on.
- Check the environment. If the problem occurs indoors, in a vehicle, or among tall buildings, move to an open area and wait several minutes before deciding whether it persists.
- Check iPhone time settings. If you use an iPhone, verify date, time, and time zone, with automatic settings where possible.
- Compare apps and places. If you can, check a second location app and repeat the test outdoors. A problem limited to one app points you toward that app’s access or behavior; a problem across multiple apps in open sky is a stronger reason to seek device-specific support.
For a useful comparison, keep the test conditions as similar as possible: use the same phone, check the same general place, and allow time for a satellite fix outdoors. The goal is not to produce a scientific measurement but to find out whether changing the location environment or checking app access changes the symptom. If you change several unrelated settings at once, it becomes harder to identify what helped.

On Android, leave Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning questions within the context of the device’s Location Accuracy features. Turning off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is not a guaranteed GPS remedy, and it may remove signals a supported device could otherwise use for its location estimate. If privacy is a concern, review the platform’s privacy settings and decide whether those features fit your preferences rather than assuming a connectivity switch will improve the result.
What to make of common GPS symptoms
The location is wrong indoors but improves outside
This pattern is consistent with limited satellite visibility indoors. A phone may use available wireless signals or other supported sources in the meantime, but the estimate can behave differently from a position acquired with visible satellites. Test from an open area and allow time for the phone to find satellites.
Walls, roofs, tall buildings, and nearby terrain are relevant because they can obstruct satellite signals. Moving a short distance toward a clearer view may change what the phone can receive; it does not mean the phone has permanently improved or that the indoor location will match the outdoor one. If your navigation or tracking task takes place indoors or in a covered area, understand that conditions there may not support the same satellite reception as open sky.
The marker jumps or wanders while you are standing still
First check whether the behavior occurs in more than one location app. Review app permissions and the device-level location setting, then compare indoors with open sky. A wandering marker alone does not identify the cause or establish that the GPS receiver is defective; the estimate can involve several signal sources, and the displayed map is not the same thing as the receiver.
Also distinguish a changing position from a changing direction indicator. The position dot, compass heading, map presentation, and route are different pieces of the experience. Check which one is actually moving or pointing incorrectly before changing settings. If the phone is in a place with obstructed satellite visibility, test again in open sky after allowing several minutes to acquire visible satellites.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe position works in one app but not another
Review each app’s location access separately. On iPhone, confirm the affected app’s access and Precise Location control. On Android 12 and later, check both the app’s precise-location permission and device-wide Location Accuracy. Apps may have different access levels, so a setting that works for one does not prove that another has the same permission.
For an app used for navigation, location sharing, or activity tracking, consider whether it needs access only while open or also when running in the background. These access levels are distinct. Available guidance does not establish that one level is best for every app; choose based on the app’s purpose and the access choices shown in its settings.
The dot is close, but the direction or route seems wrong
Position, compass heading, map details, and routing are not interchangeable. Check whether the issue is the location dot itself or the direction the map points, and compare the result in another app. The cited platform guidance does not establish that a confusing map or heading is evidence of a failed GPS receiver.
A route that looks wrong is not, by itself, a direct test of GPS reception. The location estimate, map data, and route calculation are related parts of a navigation experience, but the available troubleshooting sources do not give a universal way to diagnose a routing issue from the screen alone. Use the comparison across apps and open-sky conditions before concluding that the phone’s positioning hardware is the cause.

The problem remains across apps in open sky
If several location apps still show the same problem outdoors after the relevant permissions and settings are checked and the phone has had time to acquire satellites, contact the phone maker or carrier for device-specific support. That is a sensible next step, not proof of a hardware fault. The available platform troubleshooting guidance does not provide a universal diagnostic test that identifies a damaged receiver.
When you contact support, describe the conditions you already tested: whether multiple apps were affected, whether you checked permissions, whether the issue occurred in open sky, and whether you allowed several minutes for satellite acquisition. That gives support a clearer starting point than simply reporting “GPS is bad,” while avoiding an unsupported diagnosis of a failed component.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Limits of GPS accuracy claims and accessories
The cited Apple and Google troubleshooting guidance does not publish a universal accuracy radius, a percentage improvement, or a measured before-and-after result for these steps. Accuracy depends on visible satellites and, where supported, on other available signals and device features. Treat any precise meter figure as specific to its source, conditions, device, and measurement method rather than as a promise for every phone.
There is no single accuracy number in this guidance that applies across phones, environments, apps, and signal combinations. The official statements describe the importance of visible satellites and explain that several minutes may be needed to locate them; they do not quantify a guaranteed radius or the amount that a troubleshooting step will improve a position. Do not treat a particular meter figure or percentage as a general phone specification unless its source and testing conditions are directly relevant.
The official troubleshooting steps focus on app permissions, device settings, clock correctness on iPhone, satellite visibility, and combined location estimation. They do not establish a broadly compatible external receiver, antenna, mount, replacement part, or generic GPS booster as a reliable way to improve every phone’s accuracy. A device-specific accessory claim would need evidence for that exact phone and accessory; without it, start with the settings and reception checks above.
A mount may position a phone conveniently, but the cited sources do not establish that a generic mount improves location accuracy. Similarly, the sources do not support a universal external GPS receiver or antenna recommendation. A generic GPS booster or repeater claim would require separate model-specific and regulatory research before it could be recommended. Be cautious of a product promise that claims a guaranteed improvement for all phones when the location estimate depends on device capability and reception conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I improve GPS accuracy on my phone quickly?
Check that the affected app has location access and, if needed, precise-location permission. Then move to an open area with a clear view in several directions and wait several minutes for visible satellites to be located. On Android 12 and later, check both the app’s precise-location permission and device-wide Location Accuracy; on iPhone, confirm Location Services and the app’s Precise Location setting.
Why does my phone location jump around when I am standing still?
A wandering marker alone does not prove the GPS receiver has failed. A phone’s estimate may combine satellite GPS with available Wi-Fi, cellular, Bluetooth, and sensor information, and the map marker is distinct from the map display or compass heading. Check the app’s permissions, compare another location app, and test outdoors after allowing time to acquire satellites.
Should I turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to get better GPS?
Not as a universal fix. On supported Android devices, Location Accuracy can use nearby Wi-Fi access points and other available signals; Apple says Location Services may use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as well as GPS and mobile data. Turning wireless features off does not make a blocked satellite signal pass through a building and may remove information that could help estimate location. Google documents data collection associated with Location Accuracy, so review privacy settings if that is a concern.
Best Value
Does Android Location Accuracy replace precise-location permission?
No. On Android 12 and later, an app’s precise-location permission and the device-wide Location Accuracy setting are separate controls. The app permission affects whether that app can receive precise location, while Location Accuracy lets supported devices use additional sources for an estimate. Check both, and note that setting names and availability vary by Android version and manufacturer.
How long should I wait for my phone to find GPS satellites?
A phone may need several minutes to locate visible satellites, and accuracy can improve gradually during that time. Apple’s guidance says locating all visible satellites can take several minutes. Move to an open area, keep the phone where it has an unobstructed view in several directions, and retest rather than judging the result immediately.
Can a phone get GPS indoors?
Satellite signals can be obstructed by walls and roofs, so GPS reception may be limited indoors. A supported phone may still estimate location using Wi-Fi, cellular networks, Bluetooth, or sensors, but that combined estimate is not the same as making satellite signals pass through a building. Results depend on the device, settings, and signals available.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why is my location accurate in one app but not another?
Apps can have different location access levels. Review the affected app’s permission individually, including Precise Location on iPhone or precise-location permission on Android 12 and later. If needed, check the Android device-wide Location Accuracy setting too; enabling one control does not automatically grant every app the same access.
Is there a guaranteed GPS accuracy range for every phone?
No universal accuracy radius or improvement percentage is provided by the cited Apple and Google troubleshooting guidance. Results depend on visible satellites and, where supported, other available signals and device features. Treat any number as specific to its device, conditions, and measurement method rather than a promise for all phones.
Should I buy a GPS booster or external antenna for my phone?
The cited troubleshooting sources do not establish a generally compatible receiver, antenna, or generic GPS booster as a reliable way to improve every phone. Start with app permissions, device settings, and open-sky reception. Any accessory claim would need evidence for the exact phone and accessory; a booster or repeater would also need separate model-specific and regulatory research.
What if my phone is still inaccurate in several apps outdoors?
After checking app permissions and applicable device settings, test in open sky and allow several minutes for satellite acquisition. If the problem persists across multiple location apps, contact the phone maker or carrier for device-specific support. That is a sensible next step, but the available guidance does not make it a definite diagnosis of hardware failure.

The Bottom Line
Start with app-specific location permissions, then check the platform settings that apply: iPhone Location Services, Precise Location, and automatic date and time; or Android 12 and later precise-location permission plus Location Accuracy. For satellite reception, move to open sky and wait several minutes. If several apps remain inaccurate after those checks, seek device-specific support rather than assuming a receiver failure or buying an unverified accessory.
