Sometimes you can erase a locked Android phone without signing in to a Google Account, but that does not guarantee you can set it up and use it afterward. A protected phone may ask for a Google Account previously added and synced to the device. If you have forgotten your screen lock or account details, identify which prompt you are seeing and try account recovery before resetting: a factory reset erases local data and may not remove the ownership check.
What “unlock” means on an Android phone
People use “unlock” for several different problems. The fix depends on whether the phone is asking for its screen-lock credential, requesting an account after a reset, or restricted to a particular mobile network.

- Forgotten screen lock: The phone is asking for the PIN, pattern, or password used to open its current session. Google’s general guidance for a device you cannot unlock is to erase it and set it up again. The old “Forgot pattern” option applies only to Android 4.4 or lower. See Google’s guidance for a phone you can’t unlock.
- Google Account verification after reset: Setup is asking for an account previously used on the phone. This is an ownership check, often called Factory Reset Protection (FRP) or device protection. Resetting is not a way to remove it. Google describes the check for Pixel devices in its device-protection guidance; Samsung documents similar protection for Galaxy devices in its Google Device Protection guidance.
- Carrier or network lock: This limits which mobile networks the phone can use. It is separate from both the screen lock and Google verification. Contact the carrier to ask about eligibility and the process for your model and account.
What to do before resetting
1. Read the exact prompt
If the phone is asking for a PIN, pattern, or password before you can open it, you have a screen-lock problem. If it is in setup and asks you to verify an account previously used on the device, you have an account-verification problem. These are different stages, and a reset that addresses the first may still leave you at the second.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2. Recover the Google Account
Before erasing the phone, try to regain access to the Google Account associated with it. Google’s account recovery page covers forgotten usernames or passwords and problems receiving verification codes. Google says incorrect guesses do not remove you from the recovery process. It also warns users not to share passwords or verification codes with recovery services: “We don’t work with any service that claims to provide account or password support.”

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
3. Check the account and backup
Google advises confirming the username and password associated with the phone and checking that you have a backup before a factory reset. A backup may restore eligible data during setup if you can access the relevant account and the data was backed up. It cannot restore files or other information that existed only on the locked phone. Review Google’s factory-reset preparation guidance before proceeding.
What a reset can—and cannot—do
A factory reset erases local phone data, including installed apps and their data. It can return the phone to setup, but that is not the same as proving ownership or recovering erased data. On a protected device, setup may require a Google Account previously added and synced to the phone; a guest account does not satisfy the Pixel requirement described by Google. Samsung likewise describes a previous-account check after an unauthorized reset. Exact behavior depends on the device, Android version, and applicable management policies, so no single reset outcome applies to every phone.

Google documents two broad erase routes for Android phones: remotely erasing a device when the necessary device, connectivity, account, Find Hub, and Google Play conditions are met, or following the manufacturer’s button-reset instructions. The available route depends on the phone and its state. Neither route promises that setup will skip ownership verification. Google’s reset instructions point users to the manufacturer for model-specific button steps; its unlock guidance describes erase options for a phone that cannot be unlocked.
Why Google cannot simply provide the forgotten screen PIN
The screen lock protects some private data on the phone using encryption. Google says it does not store or have access to the user’s PIN, pattern, or password, so account recovery cannot reveal the phone’s local screen-lock credential. The distinction matters: recovering a Google Account may help you pass ownership verification after a reset, but it does not disclose a forgotten screen lock or bring back local data erased by resetting. Read Google’s explanation of Android screen-lock data protection.

Choose the route that matches your situation
| Route | What it can address | Data and access implications | What you may need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recover the Google Account | Forgotten account credentials or unavailable account verification | May avoid a destructive reset; it does not reveal the phone’s screen-lock credential | Google’s account recovery process |
| Erase or reset the phone | A screen-lock problem where Google’s documented remedy is erasure and setup | Erases local data and may still lead to an ownership check during setup | Access to a documented erase route; for button steps, the manufacturer’s instructions |
| Manufacturer-authorized service | Model-specific help when account details or reset steps remain a problem | Process and requirements vary by manufacturer, device, and region | Samsung says owners who cannot remember account details can bring the device and proof of purchase to an authorized Samsung Service Center |
When to contact the manufacturer or carrier
If you cannot recover the relevant account or are unsure how to reset a particular model, contact the device maker’s authorized support channel and ask what it can do for an owner who can establish legitimate ownership. Samsung’s published Galaxy guidance says an owner who cannot remember the account details can bring the device and proof of purchase to an authorized Samsung Service Center. Confirm the current process for your model and region. For a carrier or network lock, contact the carrier instead; it is a separate issue from Google verification.
Avoid third-party services or tools that claim they can bypass Google verification or recover a password for you. Google says it does not work with account- or password-support services and advises users not to give them passwords or verification codes.
