To recover a deleted photo for free, restore it from the bin that matches where it was deleted: Windows Recycle Bin, OneDrive Recycle bin, Google Photos Trash, or iCloud Photos Recently Deleted. Open that location, select the photo, and choose its restore option. The usual built-in route works only while the item remains there; if a bin was emptied or its retention period expired, recovery depends on finding a separate copy in another account, device, or backup.
First, identify which bin to check
“Recycle Bin” can mean different things. A photo deleted from a Windows computer may be in its local Recycle Bin; a cloud photo library has its own deleted-items folder. A synced photo may be connected to both a device and a cloud service, so the phone’s gallery is not necessarily an independent backup.

- Deleted a file on a Windows PC: check the Windows Recycle Bin.
- Deleted it from OneDrive: check OneDrive’s online Recycle bin, and also check the computer’s Recycle Bin or Mac Trash if you deleted it through a synced folder.
- Deleted it in Google Photos: check Google Photos Trash.
- Used iCloud Photos on Windows: check Recently Deleted in iCloud Photos; if the deletion was on the Windows computer, check Windows Recycle Bin as well.
If you are unsure, check each account and service you actually used to store the photo. A cloud library’s deleted-items folder is separate from the computer’s local bin.

Restore photos from Windows Recycle Bin
- Open Recycle Bin on the Windows desktop. If you do not see its icon, search for Recycle Bin from the Start menu.
- Find the photo. Select multiple files if needed.
- Right-click a selected file and choose Restore.
Windows restores the selected items through the Recycle Bin restore action. If the photo is not there, check the cloud service or other storage location where it may have been kept.

Restore photos from OneDrive
- Sign in to OneDrive on the web using the account that held the photo.
- Open Recycle bin.
- Select the photo or photos and choose Restore.
Microsoft’s OneDrive mobile support guidance says deleted files stay in the cloud Recycle Bin for 30 days. Retention and restore options can differ for personal and work or school accounts, including because of administrator policies, so follow the rules shown for your account. Microsoft’s OneDrive restore instructions also advise checking your computer’s Recycle Bin or Mac Trash if you deleted a file from a synced OneDrive folder. Online-only files do not appear in that local bin.
If a photo has been permanently deleted from the OneDrive Recycle Bin, Microsoft says it cannot be recovered through OneDrive restore. Microsoft 365’s “Restore your OneDrive” feature can undo changes from the last 30 days for eligible subscribers, but it is not a free universal recovery method and does not recover a file permanently deleted from the Recycle Bin.

Restore photos from Google Photos Trash
- Sign in to Google Photos on the web with the account that stored the photo.
- Open Trash.
- Select the photo and choose Restore.
Google’s reviewed desktop help guidance says items in Trash are permanently deleted after 30 days, and permanently deleted items cannot be restored. If the photo is missing, Google recommends checking Archive and backup settings. Google Photos’ help page explains the Trash workflow.
Deleting an item in Google Photos can also remove it from Android or iOS devices where Google Photos is installed and backup is turned on. Google says this does not automatically remove items from services such as Drive, Gmail, or YouTube. Check another account or service only if you had separately stored a copy there. Google’s guidance on deleting photos and videos describes this sync behavior.

Recover iCloud Photos on Windows
Apple’s iCloud for Windows guide says iCloud Photos items can be recovered from Recently Deleted within 30 days. Its instructions also direct you to the Windows Recycle Bin for a photo deleted on the computer. These are separate locations, so check the one that matches the deletion. Apple’s iCloud for Windows guide covers these recovery options.
What if the bin is empty or the photo is gone?
Check for a genuinely separate copy: another signed-in account, a different device, an external backup, or another cloud library you had configured before deletion. A backup helps only if it contains the photo from before it was deleted. A synced view of the same library may not be an independent copy.

Do not assume that a photo can be restored after it has been permanently deleted. Microsoft says OneDrive cannot restore files permanently deleted from its Recycle Bin, and Google says permanently deleted items cannot be restored from Photos Trash. The reviewed guidance does not establish a guaranteed free recovery route after permanent deletion.

| Where the photo was deleted | First place to check | Published retention guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Windows computer | Windows Recycle Bin | Not stated in the cited Microsoft guidance. |
| OneDrive | OneDrive online Recycle bin; also local Recycle Bin or Mac Trash for deletions through a synced folder | 30 days in Microsoft’s OneDrive mobile support guidance; account type and administrator policy may affect options. |
| Google Photos | Google Photos Trash | 30 days in the reviewed Google Photos desktop guidance. |
| iCloud Photos on Windows | Recently Deleted in iCloud Photos; Windows Recycle Bin for a computer deletion | 30 days for iCloud Photos items, according to Apple’s iCloud for Windows guide. |
These are service retention rules, not guarantees that every deleted photo remains recoverable in every account or circumstance. If the photo is not in the relevant bin, your best next check is for a separate copy made before deletion.
