Yes—usually. You can switch the primary assistant back to Google Assistant, silence Gemini’s activation methods, and remove the Gemini app without disabling Google Search. The important detail is that Android treats the assistant choice, Gemini app, Circle to Search, and Google app as separate controls. Change the assistant setting first, test it, and only then remove or disable anything else.
What “turning off Android AI” actually involves
Android does not provide one universal switch labeled “disable all AI.” The features people commonly mean are managed independently:

- Default digital assistant: the service launched by “Hey Google,” a button or gesture, or an assistant shortcut.
- Gemini app: the mobile app that can act as the selected assistant and provide Gemini conversations.
- Gemini activation settings: hands-free voice activation, power-button gestures, and use while the phone is locked.
- Circle to Search: a separate screen-search feature with its own requirements.
- Google app and system services: components used by Search and other Android functions.
Because these controls are separate, removing one does not automatically reset the others. A safe change targets the specific feature you do not want instead of disabling broad Google components.

There are three common goals. Decide which one matches your situation so you do not remove more than necessary.

Keep Google Assistant and Search, but stop Gemini prompts
Switch the default assistant to Google Assistant, then turn off Gemini’s hands-free and lock-screen activation options. Gemini can remain installed for occasional use, but it will no longer intercept the assistant shortcut.
Remove Gemini from the phone
First select Google Assistant as the default assistant. After confirming that voice and button activation work, delete the Gemini mobile app. This removes the app while preserving the assistant choice you tested.
Keep the assistant but disable screen-based AI features
Circle to Search is controlled separately. You can leave Google Assistant and Search enabled while turning Circle to Search off, provided your device exposes that setting.

Safe sequence: switch first, test second, remove last
The following order minimizes the chance of losing your assistant shortcut or confusing an app-removal problem with a default-assistant problem. Menu names can differ by manufacturer and Android version, but the Gemini app path below is the one documented by Google.
- Open Gemini. Launch the Gemini mobile app from the app drawer.
- Open the assistant-switching menu. Tap Menu, then your profile picture or initial, and choose Switch to Google Assistant.
- Select Google Assistant. Confirm the change when prompted. Google states that, after switching, “Hey Google” and touch activation use Google Assistant.
- Test both entry points. Say “Hey Google” and ask a simple question. Then use the power-button or Home-button assistant shortcut supported by your phone. Confirm that Google Assistant opens rather than Gemini.
- Silence Gemini if it remains installed. In Gemini settings, turn off Talk to Gemini hands-free, remove Gemini from the power-button gesture if that option appears, and disable Use Gemini without unlocking.
- Delete Gemini only after the tests pass. Uninstall the Gemini mobile app using your phone’s normal app-uninstall control. Do not use app deletion as a substitute for changing the default assistant; those are separate actions.
- Configure Circle to Search independently. If you want it, verify its requirements. If you do not want it, use the Circle to Search setting documented for your device to turn it off.
This sequence is reversible. You can reinstall Gemini or select it again later, but the assistant selection should always be checked after a major app or system change.

The last row is intentionally not part of the normal removal procedure. Disabling a core Google component can change more than Gemini, and the exact effects depend on the phone’s software build.
How to keep Google Search working
Google Search does not require Gemini to be the default assistant. The low-risk approach is to leave the Google app and Android system services enabled, while changing the assistant and Gemini-specific settings described above.

Changes that normally preserve Search
- Selecting Google Assistant as the default digital assistant.
- Turning off Gemini hands-free activation.
- Removing Gemini from a power-button gesture.
- Disabling Gemini use while the phone is locked.
- Uninstalling the Gemini mobile app after the assistant switch.
- Turning Circle to Search on or off through its own device setting.
Changes that can affect Search or other features
Disabling the Google app, Android system services, or another package identified as a system dependency can remove search entry points, break assistant launches, or affect unrelated functions. There is no single cross-device list of safe packages to disable. Treat those changes as device-specific troubleshooting, not as a general way to turn off AI.
Circle to Search has separate requirements
Circle to Search is not simply another Gemini switch. On supported devices, it requires Google to be the default digital assistant and requires Use screen and app data to be enabled. If either requirement is missing, Circle to Search may disappear or refuse to start.
If you want to keep Circle to Search
- Confirm that Google is selected as the default digital assistant.
- Open the Circle to Search settings available on your phone and enable Use screen and app data.
- Invoke Circle to Search using the device’s documented gesture, such as a long press on the navigation handle or Home button where supported.
Removing Gemini does not by itself decide whether Circle to Search is available. Compatibility, navigation mode, manufacturer software, and the Android version also matter.

If you want Circle to Search gone
Use the Circle to Search toggle in your phone’s settings or the Pixel-specific setting where that control is provided. This leaves Google Assistant and ordinary Search untouched because it changes a separate feature.
Menu differences by phone and Android version
Android settings are not identical across Pixel phones and devices from other manufacturers. A setting may be under Apps, Default apps, Digital assistant, Gestures, or a manufacturer-specific section. Labels can also change between Android releases.
If the Gemini menu does not show Switch to Google Assistant, search the Settings app for digital assistant, default assistant, or assistant app. Do not assume that a missing label means the feature cannot be changed; it may be exposed in the system’s default-app controls instead. Conversely, do not select a similarly named setting without checking that it changes the assistant provider rather than voice input or accessibility.
Managed or work-owned phones
Administrators can impose additional policies on managed Android devices. Enterprise controls may cover generative-AI features, Circle to Search, or system-service behavior. A setting that is available on a personal phone may be hidden, locked, or automatically restored on a work-managed device. Contact the device administrator before attempting package removal or policy workarounds.
Verification checklist after each change
Testing one function at a time makes it clear which change caused a problem.

- Voice: say “Hey Google” and wait for Google Assistant’s response.
- Physical shortcut: use the supported power-button, Home-button, or navigation gesture.
- Search: open the Google app and run a normal web search.
- Screen search: if retained, invoke Circle to Search and confirm that it can read the current screen.
- Lock state: if you disabled lock-screen Gemini access, verify that the phone does not open Gemini while locked.
- App state: check the app drawer and Settings’ app list to confirm whether Gemini is installed, disabled, or merely hidden by the launcher.
Run the checklist after switching assistants and again after uninstalling Gemini. If everything works after the first test, a later failure points to the uninstall or another intervening setting rather than the assistant switch itself.

“Hey Google” still opens Gemini
Reopen Gemini and repeat Menu > profile picture or initial > Switch to Google Assistant > Google Assistant. Then check the system’s default digital-assistant setting. A voice trigger can continue launching Gemini when the app remains installed if the default selection was never changed.
The power-button shortcut does nothing
Check whether your phone assigns the gesture to Gemini, Google Assistant, another assistant, or a manufacturer action. Reassign it to the assistant shortcut offered by the device, then test again. Some phones use a long press, while others use a different duration or navigation gesture.
Circle to Search disappeared
Confirm that Google is the default digital assistant and that Use screen and app data is enabled. If both are correct, check whether the phone model, navigation mode, or software version supports Circle to Search. On a managed phone, an administrator policy may have disabled it.

Re-enable the Google app or any system package you disabled, restart the phone, and test Search before changing anything else. Because package names and dependencies differ by manufacturer, use the phone maker’s recovery instructions if a component cannot be restored from Settings. Avoid repeating the cleanup until you know which package caused the failure.
The expected toggle is missing
Look under both the Gemini app and the system’s default-app or gesture settings. If the control is still absent, the phone’s Android build may not expose it, or a management policy may be enforcing the setting. An unavailable toggle is not evidence that disabling a core service is safe.
How to restore Gemini later
To return to Gemini, reinstall the app if it was removed, open it, and use its assistant-switching menu to select Gemini when that option is offered. Re-enable only the activation methods you actually want, such as hands-free use or lock-screen access. If Circle to Search is also desired, verify its Google-default-assistant and screen/app-data requirements after changing the assistant.
Restoring Gemini does not require disabling Google Search. Search and assistant selection remain separate settings, so you can choose Gemini for assistant interactions while continuing to use the Google app for web searches.

Bottom line for a safe removal
Start with the assistant setting, not the uninstall button: switch to Google Assistant, test voice and hardware activation, silence any remaining Gemini triggers, and only then remove the Gemini app. Manage Circle to Search on its own. Leave the Google app and low-level system services alone unless you are following device-specific recovery guidance, because those components can affect Search and other Android features far beyond Gemini.
