Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Short answer: use an AI detector as a lead, not a verdict. Detector scores can help you decide what to examine next, but they are not proof that an image, video, audio clip or document is genuine or synthetic. Accuracy changes with the media type, generator, training data, compression, resizing and other edits. For anything consequential, combine the score with source and context checks, provenance, independent corroboration and trained human review.
Why an AI-detector score is not proof
A detector estimates whether a file resembles examples of synthetic or manipulated media that it has learned to recognize. It does not directly observe the event depicted, identify the person who created the file or establish whether the claim attached to the file is true. A genuine recording can be flagged, and a sophisticated fake can pass.

Performance is conditional. A model trained mostly on one image generator may perform better on that generator than on another. Re-encoding, screenshots, resizing, cropping, filters, noise reduction, subtitles and platform processing can remove or distort the traces a detector relies on. A detector that performs well on a laboratory test set can therefore behave differently on a social-media repost or a live video call.
False positives matter as much as false negatives. Calling authentic evidence fake can damage a person’s reputation, undermine legitimate reporting and encourage the public to dismiss real documentation. Missing a synthetic recording can enable fraud. Treat the output as a probability or triage signal whose meaning depends on the test conditions.

What published accuracy numbers really mean
NIST’s 2024 review illustrates why a single advertised percentage is inadequate. The studies below used different datasets, generators, definitions and evaluation procedures, so their numbers are not interchangeable benchmarks.
| Media and study reported by NIST (2024) | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Images, 2023 study | 61%–70% accuracy | Performance in that study’s conditions; it does not establish the same rate for every generator or real-world upload. |
| Images, 2022 study | 50%–62% accuracy; area under the ROC curve (AUC) 52%–91% | The wide spread shows how strongly results depend on the system and test setup. AUC summarizes ranking ability across thresholds, not a guaranteed field accuracy. |
| Synthetic video, 2023 survey | 62%–99% accuracy | A survey range across systems and evaluations, not a promise that a particular detector will reach 99% on your clip. |
Before relying on a vendor’s number, ask which modalities and generators were tested, how many genuine and manipulated samples were used, what threshold produced the result, and whether the test set was independent. Require separate false-positive and false-negative rates. A high accuracy figure without those details cannot tell you the risk of a wrong decision.

- Facial or vocal inconsistencies: systems look for movements, expressions, lip synchronization or speech characteristics that do not fit a natural recording.
- Generation traces: systems search for statistical or technical fingerprints left by an image, video or audio generator.
- Color abnormalities: systems identify unusual pixel or lighting patterns that may result from synthesis or compositing.
These signals are not permanent. New generators can eliminate today’s visual hallmarks, and ordinary editing can create artifacts that resemble synthetic traces. Detection, labeling, provenance and testing are complementary safeguards rather than substitutes for one another.
Questions to ask before trusting a detector
Use this checklist when selecting or auditing a service for moderation, journalism, hiring, identity checks or another consequential task:
- Modality: Does it cover the exact format—text, image, video or audio—and the relevant codec, resolution and language?
- Generator coverage: Were current and older generators, face-swaps, voice-cloning systems and common editing pipelines included?
- Test design: Were genuine and manipulated examples balanced, and was evaluation performed on data that the developers did not use for training?
- Error reporting: Are false-positive and false-negative rates reported at the operating threshold you will use?
- Robustness: Was performance measured after compression, resizing, cropping, screenshots, paraphrasing or other ordinary transformations?
- Independent evaluation: Have outside researchers or an impartial test reproduced the results?
- Privacy: What happens to uploaded files, biometric information and metadata? How long are they retained, and are they used to train another model?
- Human escalation: Is a trained reviewer required before an account, payment, publication or identity decision is made?
NIST Special Publication 800-63A says automated media analysis should be tested on genuine and manipulated examples, with expected error rates documented, and that automated decisions should be augmented by manual review. That is a useful minimum for any high-impact deployment.

A practical verification workflow
For an unfamiliar file, work from the least destructive checks to the most specialized analysis. Preserve the original before opening it in an editor or converting it.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Pause before acting. Do not publish, forward, pay, disclose a password or grant remote access while authenticity is uncertain.
- Preserve the original. Save the unmodified file, message, account name, timestamp, URL and surrounding conversation. Screenshots alone can discard metadata and compression history.
- Record the detector result, including conditions. Note the service, version if shown, threshold, file format and score. A score without its operating conditions is not reproducible evidence.
- Inspect the source. Check when and where the account first posted the item, whether the account is established, and whether earlier versions or a longer recording exist. A repost is not independent confirmation.
- Check context. Compare the claimed date, location, weather, language, uniforms, landmarks and event schedule with independently obtained information. Look for original reporting or witnesses that do not rely on the same clip.
- Review provenance. If the file carries Content Credentials, inspect the signed history and every modification recorded. Treat missing credentials as unknown, not as evidence of fakery.
- Seek independent corroboration. Contact the person or organization through a phone number, email address or website you obtained separately from the suspicious message. Do not use contact details supplied inside the potentially fraudulent content.
- Escalate high-stakes cases. Have a trained human reviewer compare the original media, metadata, source history and corroborating evidence. Document the reasoning and preserve both supporting and conflicting indicators.
Can you tell from visual or audio clues?
The FBI lists possible indicators such as facial warping, unnatural movement, inconsistent features, abnormal skin or lighting, distorted audio, unusual pauses, choppy sentences, odd inflections and background noise that does not fit the scene. These observations can justify closer examination, but they cannot certify a file.
Compression can make a genuine video look choppy, while a high-quality synthetic clip may hide the same artifacts. Lighting can change naturally during a call; microphones can create echoes; a speaker may pause because of network delay. Use human clues to generate questions, not to reach a final determination. As generators improve, today’s telltale signs may disappear.

Do Content Credentials prove an image is real?
C2PA Content Credentials are digitally signed, tamper-evident records that can describe how an image, video, audio recording or document was created, modified and handled. If a recorded asset is altered, broken cryptographic links can signal that the history no longer matches the file.
Credentials establish provenance, not truth. They can show that a camera captured a file, that software edited it or that a publisher approved a version; they do not prove that the depicted event happened as claimed, that a speaker was honest or that the scene was not staged. C2PA explicitly presents provenance as a complement to media literacy, fact-checking and digital forensics.
History can also be incomplete. An editing or sharing tool that does not preserve credentials may remove them, and a file without a signed history may still be authentic. Use provenance to answer “what happened to this file?” and independent evidence to answer “is the claim true?”

How to handle a suspicious video call or voice message
Synthetic content is used in social engineering, spear-phishing, business-email compromise, romance scams, investment fraud and impersonation. The FBI’s December 3, 2024 public-service announcement warns that criminals can conduct real-time video chats while posing as executives, law-enforcement officers or other authorities.
- Stop the transaction. Do not send money, cryptocurrency, credentials, intimate images or remote-control access.
- Break the channel. End the call or stop replying rather than allowing urgency and conversation to override verification.
- Use an independently obtained contact. Call the person’s known number, start a new conversation from your address book or contact the organization through its official directory.
- Use a pre-agreed challenge. A family secret word or phrase, or a question only the real person would know, is stronger than asking the suspicious caller to confirm their identity.
- Preserve evidence. Keep the original message, headers where available, profile URL, payment instructions and timestamps. Do not edit the only copy.
- Report promptly. Use the platform’s fraud mechanism and contact the relevant financial institution or authorities. Fast reporting can limit further losses.
The Federal Trade Commission has cautioned that nobody should treat AI itself as the solution to harmful online content. Its work on impersonation, fake reviews, media manipulation and misinformation, along with its voice-cloning framework, emphasizes prevention or authentication, real-time detection or monitoring, and post-use evaluation. No single detector removes the need for those layers.
Rules for organizations making consequential decisions
A newsroom, employer, bank, school or platform should define in advance what a detector can trigger. A low-confidence score may justify a queue for review; it should not automatically reject an applicant, freeze an account, deny a claim or label a person a fraudster.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Set a documented threshold and publish the expected false-positive and false-negative rates for that threshold.
- Require at least one independent source or provenance check before an adverse action.
- Give a trained reviewer access to the original file and relevant metadata, not only a screenshot or detector label.
- Log the model version, input transformations, score, reviewer decision and appeal outcome so performance can be audited.
- Retest after major generator releases, codec changes and platform redesigns; yesterday’s benchmark can become obsolete.
- Protect the files and biometric data used for analysis with defined retention and deletion rules.
This approach reflects NIST’s requirement for testing on both genuine and manipulated media and for manual augmentation of automated decisions. It also reduces the harm of confidently misclassifying authentic evidence.
Is there a reliable deepfake detector?
There is no universal detector that can reliably settle every image, video or voice question across generators, edits and contexts. A detector can be useful when its evaluation matches your media and threat model, its error rates are known, and a human treats the output as one piece of evidence. Reliability comes from the whole verification process—source investigation, provenance, corroboration and review—not from a percentage displayed beside a file.
