Use an AI chatbot for election background, not as your final authority on anything that could determine whether or how you vote. A chatbot can explain terms such as “primary” or “absentee ballot” and help you identify the right election office. It can also invent a polling place, repeat an expired deadline, misunderstand your county, or confidently state an eligibility rule that is wrong. Verify registration, dates, hours, locations, identification rules, eligibility and ballot-return instructions with your state or local election office and a current official .gov source.
What an AI chatbot can—and cannot—be trusted to do
Chatbots generate likely text from patterns in their training and conversation. They do not automatically consult your live voter file, know which county rules changed this week, or show a traceable reason for every sentence. An answer can sound precise while being outdated or fabricated.

That makes the risk uneven. A wrong explanation of what a primary is may waste a few minutes. A wrong polling address or registration deadline can stop you from voting. Use the chatbot as a convenience layer, then move every consequential fact to an official election source.

What the evidence says about accuracy
The U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s warning
The U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) wrote in its March 2024 60-Second Security Series: Cybersecurity: Artificial Intelligence that AI-generated information may seem plausible but is often inaccurate. It specifically warns that voting dates, hours and locations require a higher degree of accuracy than many AI tools can currently provide. The EAC explains that large language models can produce plausible answers that are not always correct, and that the reason for a particular response is often unclear.

The Associated Press chatbot test
An Associated Press report published February 27, 2024 described a test of OpenAI GPT-4, Meta Llama 2, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude and Mistral Mixtral conducted with election officials and AI researchers. More than half of the responses were rated inaccurate, and 40% were categorized as harmful. Failures included nonexistent polling places, dated information and an incorrect claim that Nevada voters could not register close to Election Day.
Philadelphia city commissioner Seth Bluestein said the chatbots were “not ready for primetime” for important, nuanced election information. Anthropic Trust and Safety Lead Alex Sanderford said the company’s model was not trained frequently enough for real-time information about specific elections and acknowledged that large language models can sometimes “hallucinate” incorrect information.
Evidence that is more encouraging—but narrower
A 2025 UK preprint by L. Luettgau and colleagues surveyed 2,499 people and found that 32% of chatbot users and 13% of eligible UK voters used conversational AI for politically relevant information in the week before the 2024 election. In randomized trials with 2,858 participants, conversations with AI increased belief in true information and reduced belief in misinformation about as much as self-directed internet search.

Those results support using conversational AI for general political learning. They do not establish that a chatbot has current, local voting facts for a U.S. state, county or city. Learning about an issue and finding the correct place and time to cast a ballot are different tasks.
Why a chatbot can give you a polling place that does not exist
It predicts text instead of querying an official database
A language model may have seen thousands of addresses, election pages and old news stories. When asked for a polling place, it predicts a plausible continuation rather than proving that the address is open for your election. A real street name, a closed school or a polling site from a previous cycle can be combined into a convincing but false answer.

Election information changes by time and jurisdiction
Rules can differ between states, counties, municipalities and election types. A model may merge a statewide rule with a county exception, apply a 2022 deadline to a 2026 election, or answer for the wrong country. Even a correct general statement can be wrong for your precinct.
Confidence is not evidence
Chatbots usually do not display a confidence score tied to an official record. They may cite a page that is old, irrelevant or nonexistent. A link in an answer is a lead to investigate, not proof that the claim is current.

Learn general vocabulary
Questions such as “What is a primary election?” or “How does ranked-choice voting work in general?” are suitable starting points. Ask the chatbot to explain terms in plain language, then consult your election authority for the rules that apply where you live.
Build a verification checklist
You can ask for a list of questions to take to an election office: What is my registration deadline? Do I need identification? Where is my assigned polling place? What are early-voting hours? How do I return a mail ballot, and when must it arrive? The checklist is useful even when the chatbot’s local answers are not.
Find the responsible office
A chatbot may help you identify whether your state, county or city election office handles a particular issue. Confirm the office through an official .gov page or a phone number published by that office before relying on any details.

A safe workflow for election questions
- State the jurisdiction and election. Include your country, state, county or municipality and the election date. Do not assume the chatbot will infer them.
- Ask for the source behind each factual claim. Request the exact official election-office page and the date it was checked. Treat missing, broken or unrelated links as a stop sign.
- Open the source yourself. Type the official address or use a trusted government search result rather than trusting a copied URL or phone number in the chat.
- Confirm your registration independently. Use the official voter-registration lookup or contact the election office. A chatbot cannot establish that your record is active.
- Verify operational details. Check the assigned polling place, early-voting schedule, identification rules, accessibility information and ballot-return instructions on the current official page.
- Resolve conflicts in favor of the election authority. If the chatbot and the official source disagree, follow the official source and call the office if the page is unclear.
- Report suspicious information when appropriate. Preserve the misleading response and notify the relevant election authority or another responsible channel, especially when it concerns the time, place or manner of voting.
What must be checked before you act
| Question | Why a chatbot answer is risky | Independent check |
|---|---|---|
| Am I registered? | Registration status is an individual record, not a general fact. | Use your state or local election office’s official lookup or phone line. |
| When is the deadline? | Deadlines vary by election, method and jurisdiction and can change. | Confirm the date and time on the current official election calendar. |
| Where do I vote? | Polling places can be assigned by address and can move between elections. | Use the official polling-place tool or call the election office. |
| Can I vote early or by mail? | Eligibility, application dates and return rules are jurisdiction-specific. | Read the official early-voting and mail-ballot instructions for your address. |
| What identification is accepted? | Accepted documents and exceptions differ by state and voter category. | Check the election office’s current identification guidance. |
| How do I return my ballot? | Postmarks, receipt deadlines, witnesses, signatures and drop boxes may have separate rules. | Follow the official ballot instructions and verify the final receipt deadline. |
Chatbot versus search versus an official election website
The fastest tool is not always the safest tool. Compare options on the dimensions that matter when a mistake could prevent a ballot from being counted.
| Dimension | AI chatbot | Web search | Official election website |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recency | May rely on training data or an unverified page; real-time coverage is uncertain. | Can surface newer pages, but the result may be old or unofficial. | Designed to publish the current rule, schedule and notice for that jurisdiction. |
| Jurisdiction | May blend states, counties or countries unless you specify them. | Can be narrowed with location terms, but ranking can mislead. | Directly tied to the responsible state, county or municipal authority. |
| Source transparency | Reasoning and source selection may be impossible to audit. | You can inspect results, but must judge authority yourself. | Shows the office responsible for the information and its contact details. |
| Error cost | High for dates, locations, eligibility and ballot handling. | Moderate; an incorrect result can still send you to the wrong source. | Lowest practical risk when the page is current and matches your jurisdiction. |
| Accountability | No election office is responsible for correcting the generated sentence. | Search providers do not set election rules. | You can call the publishing election office to resolve an ambiguity. |
How to prompt more safely
A careful prompt reduces ambiguity but cannot turn a chatbot into an official voter-record system. Include the election type, date, jurisdiction and the exact decision you need to make. Ask the model to separate general explanation from claims that require confirmation.
For example: “For the November 2026 election in [state] and [county], explain what early voting means in general. Then list the official election-office pages I should use to verify dates, hours and locations. Do not guess if you cannot confirm a current source.”
For a deadline: “I live in [jurisdiction]. Give me the official office responsible for voter registration and the page where its current deadline is published. Quote no date unless the page clearly states the election and year.” Replace the bracketed details with your own information in the chat; do not paste a driver’s-license number, full birth date, voter-identification number or other unnecessary personal data.

Stop before acting
Do not travel to a location, mail a ballot or share a deadline based only on a generated response. A polished tone is not confirmation.

Check the official source and call
Look for a current state, county or municipal election page. If instructions conflict, call the number printed on that official page. Election staff can tell you which rule applies to your address and voting method.
Warn others carefully
Do not forward a suspicious chatbot answer as a fact. The FBI and CISA advise seeking information from trusted state and local election officials and verifying claims through trusted official sources before sharing them. They also recommend learning about generative-AI and deepfake tactics, including knowingly false claims about the time, place or manner of an election.
Should AI help decide how or where you vote?
It can help you understand a process or formulate questions, but it should not make the operational decision for you. “Where do I vote?” requires a current, address-specific assignment. “How do I return this ballot?” requires the exact local instructions. Those are administrative facts, not recommendations that can safely be inferred from conversational fluency.
For political arguments, use the chatbot as one explanatory aid rather than an authority. Ask for definitions, competing viewpoints and primary documents, then read the original materials and compare independent, accountable sources. Keep persuasion separate from logistics: a useful explanation of an issue does not validate a claimed deadline or polling address.
Bottom line for common questions
Can I trust ChatGPT to tell me where to vote?
Not without independent confirmation. Use it, at most, to identify the name of your election authority, then obtain the assigned location from that authority’s current tool or phone line.
Best Value
Is AI accurate for election dates and registration deadlines?
Accuracy is not reliable enough to act without checking. The 2024 EAC warning and the Associated Press test show why dates and deadlines need an official source.
Why did a chatbot provide a nonexistent polling place?
It generated a plausible answer from learned patterns instead of verifying a live, address-specific election record. Old data, mixed jurisdictions and hallucinated details can all produce that result.
Can a chatbot tell me whether I am eligible?
It can describe general eligibility concepts, but your election office must resolve your individual status and any state-specific exception.
What is the safest role for AI during an election?
Use it for plain-language education and a verification checklist. Use the official election authority for every fact that controls registration, access to the ballot or ballot return.
