Can You Trust AI-Generated Code? Common Questions Answered

AI-generated code is a proposal, not proof of correctness. This guide explains a risk-based workflow for reviewing diffs, testing edge cases, scanning for vulnerabilities, documenting human approval, and evaluating coding models without unsupported safety claims.

Not by default. AI-generated code is best treated as a proposed change: useful, often fast, and potentially wrong or unsafe. Trust is earned by reviewing the diff, checking behavior with independent tests, and applying security checks suited to the code’s risk. Human approval and an auditable release process remain necessary.

What “trust” should mean for AI-generated code

When developers ask whether they can trust code produced by an AI assistant, they usually mean several different things. Does it implement the requested behavior? Does it handle errors and edge cases? Is it secure? Will it remain understandable and maintainable? Does it fit the project’s architecture and release rules?

A generated answer can be convincing while failing one or more of those tests. The assistant produces a suggestion based on its prompt and available context; it does not establish that the suggestion is correct in your application. The practical standard is therefore not “Was this written by a human?” or “Was it generated by AI?” It is “What evidence shows that this change is safe and suitable here?”

GitHub’s guidance on reviewing AI-generated code emphasizes human oversight and testing. NISTIR 8397 describes verification as a combination of complementary techniques rather than one magic check. Those principles apply whether an assistant wrote one function or generated a large feature.

Can you use AI-generated code without checking it?

No responsible workflow should merge generated code solely because it compiles, looks plausible, or came from a highly regarded model. Compilation demonstrates only that the code meets certain syntactic and type constraints. A passing example test demonstrates only what that test exercised. Neither proves that the implementation matches the requirement, protects sensitive data, or behaves correctly under unusual inputs.

Use the output as a starting point, then make verification part of the change itself. The person approving the pull request should understand what changed, why it changed, and what evidence supports shipping it. If the author cannot explain a generated section, that is a reason to investigate or simplify it—not a reason to approve it blindly.

A practical verification workflow

The following sequence works for a small generated function as well as a larger assistant-created feature. Adapt the depth of each step to the impact of the change.

1. Define the intended behavior before judging the implementation

Write down the inputs, outputs, constraints, failure behavior, and non-functional requirements. Include what must not happen. For an endpoint, that might include authorization rules, accepted content types, rate limits, and the fields that may be returned. For a data migration, it may include reversibility, a backup requirement, and how existing records are handled.

A vague request produces a vague standard of correctness. Turn “add login” into testable conditions such as “an unauthenticated request cannot access the account page,” “invalid credentials do not reveal whether an account exists,” and “password-reset tokens expire.” This gives the reviewer something concrete to compare with the generated change.

2. Inspect the diff, not just the final files

Review the smallest possible change set. In Git, start with:

git diff --stat
git diff

Check that every added or modified line supports the request. Look for unrelated refactoring, disabled assertions, removed validation, broadened permissions, hard-coded credentials, new network calls, or changes to dependency versions. Generated patches sometimes include “helpful” edits outside the requested area; those increase review risk and should be separated or removed.

Read the surrounding code, including callers and error-handling paths. A function can be locally reasonable but incompatible with an existing contract, transaction boundary, concurrency model, or data format.

3. Challenge assumptions and edge cases

Ask what happens with empty, oversized, malformed, duplicated, missing, expired, or unexpected input. Consider null values, encoding, time zones, integer boundaries, retries, partial failures, concurrent requests, and service timeouts. For security-sensitive code, examine how identity, authorization, validation, deserialization, file paths, queries, and outbound requests are handled.

Generated code often follows a familiar “happy path.” Your review should deliberately exercise the paths that examples omit. If the change handles money, permissions, personal data, or irreversible operations, use a written checklist instead of relying on memory.

4. Run independent tests

Run the project’s normal unit, integration, and end-to-end checks. Add tests for the acceptance conditions you defined, including failure cases. The tests should be understandable without the assistant’s explanation and should fail if the implementation violates the requirement.

Use the commands and environments documented by the project, and record any skipped suites or assumptions. A green result is evidence about the scenarios covered; it is not a universal proof of correctness. Review the tests themselves for weak assertions, overly broad mocks, fixed data that hides boundary conditions, or tests that merely reproduce the generated implementation.

5. Add automated analysis suited to the risk

NISTIR 8397 lists complementary verification methods. Depending on the application, use static analysis, type checking, dependency and license checks, secret detection, web-application scanning, fuzzing, and runtime monitoring. These tools find different classes of problems and can also produce false positives that require human judgment.

For example, a secret scanner can catch an accidentally committed token but cannot determine whether an authenticated user is authorized to view a record. A static analyzer may flag an injection path but cannot replace a review of the business rule that decides which records are accessible. Combine tools with tests and code review rather than treating any one result as decisive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Review the operational and maintenance impact

Check logging, metrics, alerting, rollback behavior, migration safety, and resource use. Generated code may add an expensive query, an unbounded loop, excessive logging of sensitive values, or a dependency that changes deployment requirements. Confirm that another developer can maintain the code and that comments explain decisions rather than restating syntax.

7. Record approval and evidence

Before merging, retain the reviewer’s approval, the tests and scans that ran, relevant exceptions, and the identity of the tool and model version when your organization’s policy requires it. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI guidance recommends explicit developer approval and an audit trail identifying the approving developer and the tool and model version. This record helps with incident response, later review, and repeatability.

Which checks belong in which situation?

There is no single mandatory test bundle for every generated line. Use the likely impact of failure to decide how much scrutiny is appropriate.

Change type Minimum review focus Additional checks to consider
Formatting, comments, or isolated refactoring Diff review, compile or type check, existing test suite Maintainability review and snapshot or regression tests
Business logic or data transformation Acceptance criteria, boundary tests, error-path tests, integration tests Property-based tests, fuzzing, performance checks
Authentication, authorization, or session handling Threat-focused review, negative tests, access-control tests Static analysis, web-application scanning, penetration testing, audit logging
Input parsing, deserialization, file or network handling Validation review, malformed-input tests, resource-limit checks Fuzzing, dependency review, sandbox and egress controls
Secrets or sensitive personal data Data-flow review, redaction checks, least-privilege review Secret detection, threat modeling, production monitoring
Database schema or deployment changes Migration rehearsal, backup and rollback plan, compatibility tests Load testing, staged rollout, post-deployment monitoring

The table is a risk guide, not a certification checklist. A low-looking change can still affect a critical path if it is used widely or runs with elevated privileges.

Can AI-generated code contain security vulnerabilities?

Yes. It can contain security problems just as code produced through other development workflows can. The source of the text does not remove familiar risks such as injection, broken access control, insecure deserialization, path traversal, cross-site scripting, weak cryptography, exposed secrets, unsafe temporary files, or denial-of-service conditions.

Security review should follow the data and privileges through the system. Ask:

  • What is the trust boundary for each input?
  • Where is input validated, normalized, and encoded for its destination?
  • Is authorization checked for the specific object and action, rather than only for a logged-in session?
  • Can an attacker influence a query, command, template, file path, redirect, or outbound URL?
  • Are secrets kept out of source, logs, error messages, and client responses?
  • Are parsing limits, timeouts, rate limits, and memory limits adequate?
  • Does the change create a new dependency or use an unsafe default?

OWASP’s AI-assisted secure-coding guidance recommends approval by a developer before merge and an audit trail that records who approved the change and which tool and model version were used. Those controls make accountability explicit; they do not replace technical testing.

Should AI-written changes use the normal release process?

Yes. Keep the ordinary design, review, testing, deployment, and post-deployment monitoring gates. OWASP’s code-generation guidance describes controls across the full software lifecycle, not just the moment an assistant emits code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a routine change, that may mean a pull request, automated checks, one qualified reviewer, and a monitored deployment. For authentication, authorization, input handling, deserialization, secrets, or sensitive data, require reviewers with relevant security knowledge and document the threat assumptions. Use staged rollout or a feature flag when a defect could affect many users or make rollback difficult.

After release, watch error rates, latency, authorization failures, unusual traffic, and business-level signals. A generated change can pass pre-release tests and still interact badly with production data, configuration, traffic patterns, or third-party services.

What NIST SP 800-218A does—and does not—tell you

NIST SP 800-218A augments the Secure Software Development Framework with practices for developing generative AI and dual-use foundation models. It is relevant when you are building or securing AI systems themselves.

It is not a benchmark that scores application code produced by coding assistants, and it does not establish that a particular assistant’s output is safe. Do not cite it as a pass/fail test for a generated pull request. For application-code verification, use the broader methods in NISTIR 8397 alongside project-specific requirements and security review.

Can passing AI-generated tests prove that the code is correct?

No. Generated tests can be useful for expanding coverage, creating fixtures, and suggesting boundary cases, but they may share the same misunderstanding as the generated implementation. They can encode an incorrect requirement, assert the current behavior instead of the desired behavior, or omit the failure path that matters most.

Review test intent and assertions independently. Add tests from acceptance criteria, production incidents, threat models, and domain rules. Have a human verify that a test would fail for a meaningful defect. GitHub’s 2024 U.S. Developer Survey reported that 92% of respondents use AI coding tools to generate test cases at least some of the time. That self-reported vendor survey measures usage, not test quality or security, so it should not be interpreted as evidence that generated tests are sufficient.

Which AI coding model produces the safest code?

The available guidance does not establish a universal safest model, a current head-to-head ranking, or one general vulnerability percentage. Output varies with the task, prompt, repository context, tool configuration, language, dependencies, and the quality of review.

If your team needs to compare tools, run a documented local evaluation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Select representative tasks from your own codebase, including at least one security-sensitive and one maintenance task.
  2. Give each tool the same requirements, relevant context, time limits, and allowed integrations.
  3. Evaluate functionality, security findings, test quality, maintainability, integration behavior, and review effort.
  4. Have qualified reviewers score the results against predefined criteria, and record failures as well as successes.
  5. Report the sample, versions, configuration, and limitations. Present the result as evidence for your environment, not a universal leaderboard.

A model that performs well on a small collection of examples may still be a poor fit for your languages, compliance obligations, or deployment model.

A review checklist you can use before merging

  • Requirement: Does the diff implement the requested behavior and nothing unrelated?
  • Correctness: Are normal, boundary, invalid, concurrent, and failure cases covered?
  • Security: Are authorization, validation, secrets, data handling, dependencies, and resource limits appropriate?
  • Tests: Do independent tests verify the acceptance criteria and fail for realistic defects?
  • Analysis: Have applicable static, secret, dependency, web, fuzzing, or threat-model checks run?
  • Operations: Are logging, monitoring, rollback, migration, and performance effects understood?
  • Maintainability: Can another developer explain and safely change the result?
  • Accountability: Is human approval recorded with the tool and model details required by policy?

The bottom line on trusting AI-generated code

AI can accelerate implementation, testing, and exploration, but generation is not verification. Treat every output as a proposed change. Trust it only to the extent that a human-reviewed diff, relevant tests, complementary security checks, and an appropriate release process support the behavior you intend to ship. The evidence available today supports that disciplined workflow—not a blanket claim that all AI code is insecure, nor a claim that any particular model is safest.
