Short answer: Photograph the footprint where it lies, from enough overlapping angles to show every part of its relief, include a ruler or two known-distance markers when measurements matter, and process the original images in a photogrammetry application. Then inspect coverage, holes, edges, depth, and scale before treating the model as a record. A detailed mesh is useful documentation, but photogrammetry alone does not make it complete or scientifically validated.
The safest workflow is non-invasive: obtain permission, avoid touching or altering the fossil, preserve the original files and metadata, and keep a record of the capture and processing decisions. The steps below are designed for a footprint impression on a protected surface, whether the final result is for visualization, morphology comparison, or measured research.

What a detailed 3D footprint record should contain
A useful record is more than a textured model. It combines the untouched photographs, the reconstructed geometry, a defensible scale reference when dimensions are needed, and enough context for another person to understand how the model was made.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Context: images showing the footprint in its site, with a site or specimen identifier and an appropriately sensitive location description.
- Coverage: overlapping views of the entire impression, its rim, floor, walls, and any undercuts or shadowed recesses that are visible without moving the specimen.
- Scale: a documented ruler or known distance between markers if you intend to report measurements.
- Provenance: original image files, embedded metadata, capture notes, reference dimensions, software version, and processing settings.
- Quality evidence: an inspection showing where cameras saw the surface and where holes, glare, blur, or occlusion remain.
Photogrammetry estimates three-dimensional shape by matching the same visual features in multiple photographs. In the Metashape workflow, the first stage is alignment: the software matches image features and estimates camera positions. It then uses those views to create a surface or model and, when required, a texture. Geometry that is never visible from at least two cameras cannot be reconstructed reliably; a gap hidden by a rim or a deep shadow is not repaired simply because software produces a surface over it.

Start with the purpose, permission and conservation plan
Define the result you need
Decide whether the record is primarily a visual reference, a way to compare track morphology, a source of dimensions, or a public-facing interactive model. A visual model may tolerate less coverage and no metric control. A dimensional study needs a known length, repeatable capture, and explicit checks against independent measurements. A public model may need a lighter presentation copy, while the preservation master should retain full resolution and all source evidence.
Confirm access and site rules
Ask the land manager, collection custodian or responsible curator what photography is allowed and whether a tripod, markers or lights may be placed nearby. Protected surfaces can have rules that differ by country, site and institution. Treat those rules as controlling; do not assume that a technique permitted at one locality is acceptable at another.
Do not alter the footprint for contrast
Capture the impression in place whenever possible. Do not apply chalk, water, powder, coatings or other contrast aids. Do not clean sediment, reposition material, step inside the track, or touch the surface to obtain a more convenient angle unless a responsible custodian has explicitly authorized the work. These precautions protect both the specimen and its context; they are not a substitute for local legal or conservation guidance.

Write down the footprint or site identifier, date, operator, camera and lens, lighting conditions, access limitations and the location description at a level that does not expose a sensitive site. Note whether any portion was inaccessible or partly obscured. These notes explain gaps in the model later and prevent a visually impressive file from losing its provenance.

Equipment: choose for sharp, repeatable coverage
Use equipment that lets you make crisp, high-resolution photographs without compromising the site. The categories below describe functions rather than a shopping list.
| Item | Why it matters | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Camera | Sharp detail gives the software features to match. | A modern phone can work for visualization if it produces sharp, stable images. A camera with manual controls can make focus, exposure and repeat captures more consistent when measurements matter. |
| Lens or close-focus camera | Fills the frame with the footprint while retaining context. | Use a working distance that keeps the whole track and scale reference in focus. Avoid extreme wide-angle distortion if the camera permits another option. |
| Stable support | Reduces motion blur and makes a repeatable sequence possible. | Use a tripod or other support only where it can be placed safely and legally without contacting or obscuring the fossil. |
| Lighting | Consistent illumination reveals shallow relief without changing shadows. | Prefer diffuse, steady light. Avoid glare, hard moving shadows and reflections that erase surface texture. |
| Scale reference | Supplies a known length for model dimensions. | Use a rigid, clearly graduated ruler or calibrated scale bar that is readable in the images and does not cover the track. Two markers with a documented separation also work. |
| Storage and backup | Preserves evidence beyond the exported mesh. | Keep original files, metadata, notes and the working project in at least two controlled copies when the record is important. |
Plan the photograph sequence
Think in terms of visibility, not a magic photo count. Every relevant patch of the footprint should appear sharply in several images, with enough viewpoint change to reveal depth. A practical sequence is:
- Context frames: photograph the entire footprint and its setting, including a view that shows where the track sits on the surface.
- Near-vertical frames: make a grid or arc of views looking down toward the impression. These establish the overall outline and reduce large unrecorded areas.
- Oblique frames: move around the footprint while keeping adjacent images substantially overlapped. Oblique views expose the rim, slope and floor.
- Low-angle frames: add safe, low views that show relief and undercuts. Do not enter or lean on a fragile surface just to obtain them.
- Detail frames: if a toe, heel, ridge or deep feature is unusually complex, make closer views while retaining enough surrounding texture for alignment.
Agisoft’s capture guidance states that a surface should be visible from at least two cameras and that blind zones should be minimized. A published Heritage Science workflow used approximately 70 percent overlap between adjacent frames; that is an example of one workflow, not a fossil-specific rule. Increase overlap where texture is weak or the surface is difficult to distinguish.

Capture the photographs without damaging the evidence
Keep the camera and light steady
Use low ISO where practical, enough depth of field to keep the relief sharp, and a shutter speed that prevents motion blur. Focus on the footprint rather than allowing the camera to refocus unpredictably between frames. Diffuse, unchanging light is preferable to sunlight that moves during a long sequence. Glare, specular highlights and changing shadows can hide the very features the software needs to match.

Maintain useful overlap and scale
Move in small, controlled increments so neighboring frames share plenty of the same surface. Keep every important region visible in multiple photographs. Place the ruler or markers in the same capture area, outside the impression when possible, and record the exact reference length and placement. The scale object does not need to touch the fossil; it only needs to be visible with a known dimension.
Preserve original files
Save the camera originals, including embedded metadata. Do not crop, resize, rotate or geometrically correct the images before reconstruction. Such changes can interfere with automatic camera calibration. If you need presentation crops or color adjustments, make copies and leave the processing inputs untouched.
How many photos do you need?
There is no universal minimum. The Digital Atlas of Ancient Life guide reports that its specimen examples typically used 108 to 216 photographs across three to six viewing angles. That range describes the guide’s examples, not a guaranteed level of detail for a footprint. The required number changes with footprint size and relief, camera resolution, lens, lighting, access, texture and overlap. Stop adding frames only when the whole accessible surface is repeatedly visible and the weakest areas have been addressed.

- Measure the reference with a documented value and unit before or during the session.
- Photograph it clearly in the same sequence as the footprint; do not rely on a reference photographed later under different geometry.
- In the photogrammetry project, identify the two markers or ruler endpoints and enter their known distance using the application’s reference or scale tools.
- Apply the scale before exporting measurements, then compare a model dimension with an independent field measurement when one exists.
- Record the reference value, where it was placed, which points were selected, the resulting units and any discrepancy you observed.
Scaling establishes the model’s coordinate size; it does not prove that every ridge or depth is accurate. An incorrectly measured ruler, a sloping or flexible reference, poor camera geometry or a hidden portion of the track can still produce misleading dimensions.
Process the originals in a photogrammetry application
The current Standard Edition 2.3 manual describes a sequence of image alignment, camera estimation, surface or model construction and optional texturing. Labels vary by edition and version, but the logic is consistent.
- Create a project and add the originals. In applications that use Metashape’s workflow menu, this is typically Workflow > Add Photos. Keep the files in their native resolution and retain their metadata.
- Align the photographs. The manual’s concise description is, “The first step is called alignment.” The software matches features and estimates each camera position. Review which cameras align and whether their positions form a sensible ring or grid around the footprint.
- Inspect coverage before building geometry. Look for isolated cameras, large gaps, weakly matched regions and views dominated by glare or blur. If the site rules and conditions permit, re-shoot the weak area; otherwise mark it as a limitation rather than concealing it.
- Generate a point cloud or surface. Choose a quality and density appropriate to the image detail and your intended use. More detail cannot recover information absent from the photographs.
- Build the model or mesh. Create a surface that represents the impression, checking that edges and deep regions are not being bridged across empty space. Keep the unedited result as a preservation version.
- Apply the recorded scale. Use the known marker distance or ruler endpoints, then verify the units and check a dimension against your field notes.
- Create a texture only when it serves the purpose. Texturing helps visual interpretation and public presentation, but color appearance does not compensate for missing geometry.
- Export working and presentation copies. Retain the project, aligned cameras, point cloud or mesh, texture inputs and export settings. Make decimated or cleaned copies for web viewing instead of overwriting the preservation master.
Inspect the result before calling it a record
Check camera coverage
Display the aligned cameras and confirm that each major surface patch is seen from multiple directions. A camera arrangement that looks dense from above can still leave a vertical wall or deep recess unseen.
Check geometry
Rotate the model with edges, the deepest part of the impression and any undercuts in view. Look for holes, spikes, ripples, warped borders, flattened relief and surfaces that appear to continue across a gap. Compare the mesh with the photographs rather than assuming a smooth surface is real.

Check scale and orientation
Measure the reference distance inside the model and compare it with the documented value. Confirm that units, axis orientation and any coordinate transformation are recorded. If an independent field dimension disagrees, investigate the reference selection and camera coverage before reporting a biological measurement.
Separate observation from interpretation
Label which features are directly visible, which are reconstructed from multiple views and which remain uncertain. A colored texture can make an uncertain edge look authoritative; retain notes that identify occluded or glare-affected areas.
Preserve a reproducible record
Use a folder or archive structure that keeps evidence together:
Recommended Free Tools
- Original photographs in their camera-native form.
- A copy of embedded metadata and a file inventory.
- Site, specimen and access notes, with sensitive coordinates protected as required.
- Camera, lens, focus, exposure and lighting notes.
- Reference length, units, marker locations and the selected points used for scaling.
- The photogrammetry project, software name and version, alignment and model settings, and export settings.
- Unedited preservation outputs plus clearly labeled presentation derivatives.
- A quality note listing inaccessible areas, holes, glare, blur, suspected distortion and any independent checks.
Keep at least one untouched copy of the source images and project. A future researcher should be able to distinguish the photographic evidence from a cleaned, decimated or re-textured derivative.
Can a phone capture a fossil footprint in 3D?
Yes, a phone can be used in a photogrammetry workflow, and it may be adequate for a visual record when its images are sharp and the footprint can be covered safely from enough angles. Phone capture is not automatically metric or survey-grade. Small sensors, computational sharpening, autofocus changes, rolling-shutter movement, glare and limited control can reduce repeatability.
Use a phone when it meets the actual requirements: high-resolution originals, consistent focus and exposure, sufficient depth of field, overlapping views of the relief, a visible scale reference for measurements and a validation plan. If the record will support a legal, conservation or publication decision that depends on sub-millimetre accuracy, use a documented specialist workflow and independent validation rather than relying on an unverified phone result.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Large holes in the floor or walls | The area was not visible from two or more cameras, or it was hidden by glare or shadow. | Inspect the photographs, add safe oblique or low views if possible, and label any unrecoverable gap. |
| Wavy or doubled edges | Blur, weak overlap, moving texture or unstable camera estimates. | Remove unusable frames, improve support and shutter speed, and recapture only with permission. |
| A smooth bridge across a recess | The software interpolated between sparse observations. | Compare the surface with the images; do not present the bridge as observed geometry. |
| Model will not align | Images lack shared features, are too dark or reflective, or were cropped or geometrically altered. | Return to native originals, add overlapping context, improve diffuse lighting and separate feature-poor detail shots from the main sequence. |
| Measurements have the wrong size | No scale reference, incorrect marker distance or wrong points selected. | Recheck the documented length and endpoint selection, then apply scale before taking measurements. |
| Texture looks convincing but shape is wrong | Color hides missing or distorted geometry. | Inspect the untextured mesh and coverage display; treat texture as appearance, not validation. |
Choose the workflow by the claim you plan to make
| Intended claim | Minimum defensible emphasis | What still needs qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Illustrative 3D view | Complete visual coverage, stable lighting and a readable texture. | Hidden areas and scale may remain uncertain. |
| Morphology comparison | Repeatable camera positions, overlapping relief views and preserved originals. | Differences can reflect capture or reconstruction artifacts. |
| Reported dimensions | Known-distance markers or ruler, documented units and an independent check. | Scale does not establish accuracy in occluded or distorted regions. |
| Conservation or legal evidence | Permission, chain of custody, preservation master, specialist capture and independent validation. | Do not claim a tolerance that has not been demonstrated for the specific setup. |
Limits you should state with the model
A visually detailed mesh is not automatically complete, metrically accurate or scientifically validated. Missing viewpoints, blur, glare, weak texture, occlusion, unstable camera geometry and an inaccurate reference can each undermine the result. The documented sources do not establish a fossil-footprint-specific accuracy tolerance for an unspecified camera and lighting setup. Report what was captured, how it was scaled, which areas were inaccessible and what checks were performed. That transparency makes the digital record useful without overstating what photogrammetry can prove.
