AI can help explain complex topics and prepare questions, but it is not a stand-alone professional for high-stakes medical, legal, or financial decisions. Trust depends on the exact task, the quality and currency of the evidence, the data you provide, the possibility of bias or error, and whether a licensed human can review the result. Use AI as a research assistant, drafting tool, or checklist generator. Before acting on a diagnosis, treatment change, legal filing or deadline, investment, loan, tax position, or other difficult-to-reverse decision, have an appropriately qualified professional verify it.
Why AI trust is task-specific
An AI system generates an answer from patterns in its training and the information in your prompt. It can produce a fluent explanation even when it lacks a crucial fact, uses an outdated rule, misunderstands your jurisdiction, or invents a source. A confident tone is not evidence of accuracy.

Assess a proposed use across six questions: How serious is the consequence of an error? Can you independently verify the evidence? How sensitive is the information involved? Could bias or unequal performance affect the result? Can you reverse the decision? Is a qualified person available to review it?
| Use case | Consequence if wrong | Evidence you can check | Privacy sensitivity | Reversibility | Human review |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plain-language explanation of a public medical term | Usually low, provided it does not replace care | Often high through public health sources | Low if no personal details are supplied | High | Optional for general education |
| Symptom triage or treatment change | High: delayed or inappropriate care | Mixed; symptoms need clinical context | High | Sometimes low | Clinician review before action |
| Legal issue spotting or a draft question list | Moderate to high | Depends on current law and jurisdiction | High when identifiers are included | Varies | Attorney review for action |
| Filling out a form or checking a deadline | High if a missed deadline waives rights | Must be checked against the controlling authority | High | Often low | Attorney or authorized adviser |
| Budgeting or explaining a fee | Low to moderate | Usually checkable from statements and contracts | Moderate to high | High | Useful when consequences are material |
| Investment, lending, or tax decision | High: financial loss, liability, or fraud | Market and regulatory facts change | High | Often low | Qualified adviser or tax professional |
The higher the consequence and the lower the reversibility, the less appropriate an unreviewed AI answer becomes.

Medical advice: useful for preparation, unsafe as a diagnosis
What AI can do reasonably well
AI can translate medical terminology into everyday language, organize symptoms into a timeline, suggest questions for an appointment, summarize instructions you already received, and help you identify which information a clinician may need. Those are preparation tasks, not a diagnosis or treatment plan.
Why a medical answer needs context
A symptom can have many causes, and safe triage depends on age, pregnancy status, medications, allergies, vital signs, examination findings, test results, and local emergency guidance. A system may omit a dangerous possibility or give false reassurance. Do not use a chatbot to decide whether severe or rapidly worsening symptoms can wait; contact emergency services or an appropriate local health service.

What the FDA framework means
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s January 2025 draft guidance takes a risk-based approach: the credibility of an AI model must be established for a particular context of use, with safeguards tied to safety, effectiveness, and quality. A model that helps researchers search records is not automatically validated to diagnose patients. FDA’s AI for Drug Development page reports more than 500 drug and biological-product submissions containing AI components from 2016 through 2023. That activity shows adoption in regulated development, not a blanket approval of consumer chatbots for personal care.
The same FDA page reports more than 800 external comments on its May 2023 AI discussion paper, as reported in 2025. Ongoing policy work is another reason to check the date, intended use, and regulatory status of any medical AI product rather than treating “AI-powered” as a safety claim.

A safer medical workflow
- Describe the task, not just a fear. Include the symptom timeline, relevant age range, known conditions, medications, allergies, temperature or other measured values, and your country or state. Leave out names, record numbers, and anything not needed.
- Ask for possibilities and urgency criteria. Request a list of questions to ask a clinician and explicit warning signs that require urgent care. Do not ask the system to “confirm” a diagnosis.
- Check authoritative material. Open each cited source yourself and compare it with current guidance from a public health authority, hospital, or professional medical organization. An uncited answer is not verified.
- Have a clinician interpret it. Bring the AI-generated summary and your questions to a licensed medical professional. Follow the clinician’s assessment, not the chatbot’s confidence.
Legal advice: treat AI output as general information
Where it can help
AI can explain legal vocabulary, turn your facts into a chronology, identify documents to gather, and draft questions for an attorney. It may help you find the names of relevant concepts, but it does not establish that a rule applies to your facts.
Jurisdiction and currency are decisive
Laws, court rules, agency procedures, and limitation periods vary by country, state, and sometimes court. A provision can change after the model’s training data or be displaced by a local rule. A plausible citation may be incomplete, misquoted, or unrelated to your jurisdiction. The supplied evidence does not establish a current bar-association or court position on consumers relying on generative-AI legal advice, so avoid treating AI output as a legal opinion or assuming that using it is lawful in every setting.

Tasks that require attorney verification
- Calculating a filing, appeal, response, or limitation deadline.
- Preparing or submitting a court, immigration, tax, benefits, or regulatory form.
- Signing a settlement, contract, waiver, plea, or power of attorney.
- Choosing whether to disclose facts, contact an opposing party, or accept an offer.
- Interpreting liability, eligibility, or penalties in a dispute.
A safer legal workflow
- State the jurisdiction and date. Identify the country, state or province, court or agency, and the date on which the issue arises.
- Separate facts from assumptions. Ask the system to list missing facts and competing interpretations instead of selecting the answer you hope is true.
- Demand primary authorities. Request links or citations to statutes, regulations, official forms, and court rules. Open them and confirm that the text and version match your matter.
- Protect identifiers. Remove full names, addresses, case numbers, account information, signatures, and confidential communications unless a lawyer-approved system is being used under appropriate terms.
- Obtain legal review. A qualified attorney should verify any deadline, filing, negotiation position, or document before you rely on it.
Financial advice: no AI can promise a market outcome
Investing and trading
The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission warns that AI technology cannot predict the future or sudden market changes. Claims of guaranteed returns, unusually high profits, or a system that “never loses” are fraud signals. The CFTC’s 2024 advisory about Mirror Trading International describes more than $1.7 billion stolen from at least 23,000 people. That case is a warning about trusting performance stories and automated trading claims, not evidence that every AI tool is fraudulent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBefore acting on an AI-generated investment idea, understand the underlying asset, fees, liquidity, tax treatment, downside scenarios, and who holds your money. Research the provider independently, seek a second opinion, and never transfer funds solely because an AI-generated message creates urgency or secrecy.
Best Value
Banking, lending, and consumer finance
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says AI tools can provide incorrect information, fail to provide meaningful dispute resolution, and create privacy and security risks. Existing consumer-finance laws still apply; CFPB Director Rohit Chopra summarized this point as, “there is no ‘fancy new technology’ carveout to existing laws.” An automated explanation does not remove a lender’s or provider’s obligations regarding accuracy, fair treatment, disclosures, or dispute handling.
A safer financial workflow
- Define the decision. Give the time horizon, objective, risk tolerance, jurisdiction, and constraints. Ask for assumptions rather than a single “best” product.
- Verify numbers. Recalculate fees, interest, taxes, returns, and repayment totals from statements, contracts, prospectuses, or regulator data.
- Test adverse cases. Ask what happens if income falls, rates rise, a market drops, a claim is denied, or an asset cannot be sold.
- Check the provider. Confirm registration or licensing where applicable, disciplinary history, custody arrangements, privacy terms, and how complaints are handled.
- Use human review for material decisions. A fiduciary financial adviser, lender specialist, accountant, or tax professional should review choices that could materially affect your money or legal obligations.
Governance, privacy, and bias checks
The CFTC Technology Advisory Committee identifies fairness, robustness, transparency, explainability, and privacy as responsible-AI properties, alongside human governance and risk management. You can turn those principles into practical questions:
- Fairness: Could the data or recommendation disadvantage people with a protected characteristic, disability, accent, location, or nonstandard financial history?
- Robustness: Does the answer change when a harmless fact is rephrased? What happens with missing or contradictory information?
- Transparency: Does the provider explain the model’s purpose, data sources, limitations, update schedule, and escalation process?
- Explainability: Can you see the assumptions and evidence behind a recommendation, rather than receiving only a score?
- Privacy: Who stores prompts and files, for how long, and whether they are used for training or shared with contractors?
- Human governance: Is there a person who can correct an error, investigate a complaint, and override an automated result?
Never paste a complete medical record, legal file, account number, tax identifier, password, or private correspondence when a less detailed description will do. Redact names and unique identifiers, and read the service’s data-retention and deletion terms before uploading anything.

- Write the exact question. Include the relevant facts, jurisdiction, date, and desired outcome.
- Classify the consequence. Mark the decision low, medium, or high consequence and note whether it can be reversed.
- Request uncertainty. Ask for assumptions, alternative explanations, confidence limits, and situations in which the answer could fail.
- Inspect every important source. Open the cited document, check its date and authority, and confirm that it actually supports the claim.
- Look for omissions and contradictions. Compare another authoritative source and ask what facts would change the conclusion.
- Remove unnecessary sensitive data. Use placeholders or summaries instead of identifiers and full records.
- Get independent review. Before a high-consequence action, have a licensed professional verify the output and make the final decision.
Reject any recommendation that relies on guaranteed returns, extreme urgency, secrecy, unverifiable testimonials, or influencer-only promotion. Those signals deserve skepticism whether the message was written by a person or generated by software.
