Immediate competition depends on academic standing at the school they leave and progress-toward-degree requirements at the school they join. Graduate transfers follow a separate checklist. Portal entry starts the transfer process; it does not certify eligibility.
Does transferring more than once make you sit out?
No, not by itself, for Division I. A prior transfer is not an automatic bar to competing immediately after a later transfer. The student still must meet the applicable academic conditions, and the receiving school must determine whether those requirements are satisfied. The NCAA Board of Directors ratified the Division I transfer-rule changes on April 22, 2024: NCAA Board of Directors ratifies transfer, NIL rule changes.

Undergraduates
An undergraduate must have left the previous institution academically eligible and in good standing, then satisfy progress-toward-degree requirements at the new institution before competing. A transfer history alone does not answer whether those conditions are met.

Graduate transfers are assessed under a separate set of conditions. The NCAA’s 2024 summary specifies degree completion, good academic standing when leaving the previous institution, full-time enrollment in a graduate program at the new institution, and compliance with minimum academic standards. The receiving school’s compliance staff must assess the individual case.

What the Transfer Portal does—and does not do
The NCAA describes the Transfer Portal as a centralized database. An athlete notifies their current school, and that school enters the athlete into the Portal so other institutions can see that they are available to transfer. This is a process for communicating transfer intent; it is not an eligibility ruling and does not establish the right to compete at another school. See the NCAA Eligibility Center’s transfer guidance.
Transfer windows affect when an athlete can enter the process
Notification generally must happen during the window for the athlete’s sport, subject to applicable exceptions and policy changes. Window dates vary, so an athlete should verify the current rule for their sport and situation with their school’s compliance office before relying on a date.

Basketball windows described in the January 2026 revision
In January 2026, the Division I Cabinet adopted revised windows in several sports. For men’s and women’s basketball, the NCAA described a 15-day period beginning the day after the respective championship game. It also described a separate 15-day period opening five days after a new head coach is hired or publicly announced. These are sport- and circumstance-specific windows, not a universal transfer deadline. See the NCAA’s January 14, 2026 transfer-window announcement.
Which eligibility time framework applies after the 2026 change?
Division I adopted an age-based eligibility framework in June 2026, but it is being introduced in stages. The applicable framework depends on the athlete’s enrollment and eligibility cohort, so it is not accurate to apply either the older seasons-based model or the new model to every Division I athlete.

| Athlete cohort | Framework described by the NCAA |
|---|---|
| Current student-athletes who retain eligibility after 2025–26 | May use the previous rules or the new age-based model, whichever is more favorable. |
| Prospects first enrolling full time in 2026–27 | May use either framework. |
| Prospects first enrolling in fall 2027 or later | Use the age-based model. |
| Athletes who used their final season under the previous rules in 2025–26 | The transition description does not grant additional eligibility. |
These transition categories are from the NCAA’s June 23, 2026 announcement. Under the new framework, the NCAA describes a continuous five-year eligibility period that begins at the earlier of initial full-time college enrollment or the applicable age-based trigger. The period does not pause because of a transfer or time away from competition. Being within that period does not, by itself, satisfy academic or other athletics requirements; see the NCAA Eligibility Center’s Division I and II age-based eligibility overview.
A past waiver deadline is not a current route
For current athletes under the previous framework, the NCAA said schools had to submit waiver requests for circumstances occurring during or before 2025–26 by July 31, 2026. That deadline has passed. It should not be treated as an available current option.

- Confirm the division and sport. This explanation covers Division I; Division II and Division III rules should not be assumed to match it. Check the applicable sport rules and current transfer-window policy.
- Identify undergraduate or graduate status. The immediate-transfer academic checklist differs for graduate students.
- Gather academic records from the school being left. The receiving school needs to assess academic eligibility and good standing at departure; graduate students also need to establish degree completion.
- Ask the receiving school’s compliance office to review progress and enrollment. Undergraduates must meet progress-toward-degree requirements before competing; graduate students must meet the relevant graduate enrollment and academic standards.
- Verify portal timing and certification separately. Meeting a notification window and appearing in the Portal do not replace the receiving institution’s eligibility certification.
The NCAA’s rules establish the general framework, but the title alone cannot determine an individual athlete’s eligibility. A school compliance office should apply the current Division I manual and the athlete’s records to the specific case.
