In an MBR partition table, 8e is the traditional Linux LVM partition-type code. It labels a partition’s intended use; it does not create an LVM physical volume or volume group. The separate vgcreate -s 16M option sets the physical extent size for a volume group’s physical volumes.
What does partition type 8e mean?
The “8” in 8e is not a count of commands. In the quoted instruction, “given them type 8e” means that the partitions were assigned the Linux LVM type code in an MBR (also called DOS) partition table. The Linux sfdisk(8) manual lists lvm as an alias for MBR type 8E.

MBR and GPT use different identifiers
Partition-type identifiers depend on the partition-table format. For GPT, the same lvm alias maps to the type GUID E6D6D379-F507-44C2-A23C-238F2A3DF928, not the MBR code 8e. A GPT partitioning tool may display a name or GUID rather than “8e,” so the absence of that text does not by itself indicate a problem.

These mappings are documented by the sfdisk(8) manual. They are partition-table labels, not universal identifiers shared across formats.

Does type 8e create an LVM volume?
No. The partition type is one layer; LVM’s own structures are another. A type marker identifies the partition as intended for LVM, while pvcreate initializes a device or partition as an LVM physical volume (PV) by writing an LVM disk label and metadata. vgcreate then creates a volume group (VG) using block devices. These command roles are described in the pvcreate(8) and vgcreate(8) manuals.
In short, the type code does not format a partition as a PV, create a VG, or create a logical volume (LV). Those are distinct LVM operations. Not every Linux installation requires an LVM partition, and the appropriate partition identifier depends on the table format and tools in use.

What does vgcreate -s 16M do?
In a command such as sudo vgcreate -s 16M vg /dev/sdb1, -s 16M sets the physical extent size for PVs in the new VG. Physical extents are the allocation units LVM uses when managing space in the group. The vgcreate(8) manual documents the option’s purpose.

A participant in the 2020 Linux Foundation Forums discussion said omitting it resulted in 4 MiB extents, but the current manual passage cited here does not establish that number as a universal default. If the exact default matters, check the LVM version and configuration on the target system.

How to read the original instruction
The Linux Foundation Forums thread was a learner discussion from September–October 2020 in the “LFS201 Class Forum – Discontinued” category. Its example assumes that /dev/sdb1 and /dev/sdc1 already exist and have been assigned the appropriate partition type for the partition-table format. It is explaining a label, not asking you to execute eight commands.
Do not change a partition type solely to make the text display 8e. Changing a partition table can affect access to data, and the right action depends on the disk’s existing layout. The identifier and command meanings above explain the terminology; they do not determine what should be changed on a particular system.
