Meta’s published Threads signup guidance says to log in with an Instagram account, not Facebook. Meta now lists both Facebook and Threads as services supported by its Meta Account system, but that does not confirm that a Facebook-only account can create a Threads profile in every region. If you want a Threads profile, follow the signup options Meta currently shows for your country.
Can you sign up for Threads with Facebook?
Meta’s July 5, 2023 launch announcement says: “It’s easy to get started with Threads: simply use your Instagram account to log in.” The same instructions say your Instagram username and verification carry over, while you can customize your Threads profile. Meta’s Threads launch announcement is the published signup guidance; it does not describe signing up with Facebook alone.

Meta’s April 23, 2026 announcement says Facebook and Threads are among the services supported by Meta Account, which is gradually replacing Accounts Center. Meta also says people can keep separate Meta Accounts for different apps. That account-management support is useful context, but it does not establish that a Facebook-only identity can independently create a Threads profile everywhere. See Meta’s Meta Account announcement for the rollout details.

Meta’s published launch instructions use Instagram to log in to Threads. Because account systems and signup availability can change, check the options presented in the official Threads app or on Threads’ website for your location rather than assuming Facebook login is available.

Can you use Threads without an Instagram account?
Meta has described a profile-free browsing option for people in the European Union. Under that regional option, people can browse Threads, search for accounts, share links and report content, but cannot post or interact. This is an EU-specific description and should not be treated as a global way to use Threads without a profile.
Can you sign up for Threads on the web?
Meta said on June 17, 2026, that people in Türkiye could use the Threads app or threads.com to sign up or reactivate accounts after Threads returned there. That is dated, country-specific evidence of web signup, not a guarantee that signup on the web is available everywhere. For current local eligibility and steps, consult Instagram’s official Help Center or the signup flow shown by Threads.
