How do I search my chat history in ChatGPT?

Sign in to the ChatGPT app on your iPhone.

Open the left sidebar and select the search bar.

Enter a distinctive word or phrase from the conversation. Chat-history search matches terms in conversation titles and message content, and supports exact matches.

Select the conversation in the results to reopen it.

These steps follow OpenAI’s chat-history search instructions. A specific term from the conversation is generally more useful than a broad one when you are trying to locate a particular chat.

What does the sidebar search look through?
The sidebar search looks across saved ChatGPT content in your account or current workspace. Depending on what is available, that can include chats, projects, images, and files, as well as connected Google Drive files and folders. Available content and filters can vary by account, workspace, and device, according to OpenAI’s guide to finding chats, projects, and files.

Archived chats: They can remain searchable.

Deleted chats: They do not appear in search results.

Is ChatGPT’s iPhone search the same as web search?
No. Sidebar search finds content already saved in ChatGPT; web search looks for current information online. To use web search, start a conversation, select View all tools, then Search. You can also use the slash shortcut and select Search when available. ChatGPT may start a web search automatically when a question would benefit from current information. OpenAI describes these options in its web-search guide.

Web-search availability and usage may depend on plan limits and, in managed workspaces, administrator settings. Those conditions apply to web search, not necessarily to the availability of the chat-history search control.

What if an old conversation does not appear?

Try a more distinctive word or phrase from the conversation. OpenAI says chat-history search supports exact matches.

Check whether the conversation was deleted. Deleted chats are not surfaced in sidebar search; archived chats can remain searchable.
