Usually, you cannot activate one eSIM profile on two phones at the same time. An eSIM profile is normally provisioned to one device. To get that phone’s cellular connection onto an iPad, laptop or another handset, turn on Personal Hotspot (iPhone) or Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth/USB tethering (Android). The connected devices use the host phone’s cellular plan, so their traffic counts against its data allowance and follows the carrier’s tethering, speed and roaming rules.

If you need separate cellular connections, obtain an additional data-only eSIM or multi-device line where your carrier supports it, or use a dedicated portable hotspot. Hotspot consumption depends on the activities of the connected devices—not on the hotspot feature itself. Video quality is the biggest variable: an hour can use a few hundred megabytes at low quality or several gigabytes at 4K.

What “sharing an eSIM” actually means

An eSIM is a digital SIM profile downloaded to a device’s secure SIM system. The profile authenticates that device on a mobile network; it is not a cloud data bucket that can be logged into simultaneously from several phones. Carriers normally associate one downloaded profile with one active device. Moving the line to another phone generally requires a carrier transfer, QR-code reissue or app-based activation, and the original device may stop working on that line.

That limitation is different from sharing the phone’s internet connection. A phone with an active eSIM can act as a router. Its cellular radio connects to the carrier, while Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth or USB carries the connection to nearby equipment. The second device does not need an eSIM for this arrangement.

What happens to your data allowance

Every byte sent by a laptop, tablet or second phone through the hotspot is cellular data on the host line. The carrier may count it against the same monthly allowance, apply a separate tethering cap, slow speeds after a threshold or block tethering on some plans. Google Fi’s plan information, for example, states that hotspot tethering counts toward monthly high-speed data usage. Check the exact policy for your plan and country, especially when roaming.

Ways to get one connection onto several devices

Phone hotspot: simplest for occasional use

Phone hotspot is normally the fastest setup for a meeting, a travel day or a tablet session. It adds no separate line, but the host phone’s battery, signal and carrier policy become the limits. The phone must remain nearby and cellular coverage must be adequate.

Data-only eSIM: independent connection for a second device

A data-only eSIM gives a compatible tablet, laptop or secondary phone its own mobile registration. It does not mirror the original phone’s profile; it is a separate subscription or allowance. Google Fi announced in 2025 that its data-only eSIMs can connect newer eSIM-compatible devices such as Android tablets and iPads. That is a carrier-specific example, not a universal feature. Confirm availability in your country, the plan’s supported devices, network bands, roaming terms and whether the tablet is unlocked.

Dedicated portable hotspot: better for regular multi-device use

A cellular hotspot is a small router with its own SIM or eSIM. It can stay in a bag or vehicle and serve several devices without heating or draining your primary phone. It adds hardware and usually a separate line or data plan. Before buying, verify that the unit is unlocked, supports your carrier’s bands, accepts the required SIM or eSIM, and permits the number of devices you expect to connect.

How to turn on a phone hotspot

iPhone

  1. Open Settings and select Personal Hotspot. On some iOS versions the path is Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
  2. Turn on Allow Others to Join and note or change the Wi‑Fi password.
  3. On the iPad, laptop or other phone, open its Wi‑Fi list, select the iPhone’s name and enter that password.
  4. For a wired connection, connect the iPhone by USB and approve Trust This Computer if prompted. Bluetooth tethering is available on supported devices.

Apple documents Personal Hotspot sharing with iPad, Mac, Windows PCs and other devices. A carrier can disable the feature, charge for it or limit the number of clients; the maximum also varies by iPhone model. If you use Family Sharing, the iPhone owner can allow family members to join from Settings > Personal Hotspot > Family Sharing, with options to require approval or allow automatic joining.

Android and Pixel

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering.
  2. Choose Wi‑Fi hotspot, switch it on, and review the hotspot name, password and security setting.
  3. Connect the other device through its Wi‑Fi menu. Keep the hotspot screen available if your Android version turns the network off when no clients are connected.
  4. For alternatives, return to Hotspot & tethering and select Bluetooth tethering or USB tethering after plugging in a cable.

Google says Pixel phones can connect up to 10 other devices by Wi‑Fi, subject to carrier support. Other Android models may allow fewer or more. Android’s Instant Hotspot and automatic Wi‑Fi sharing require supported Android versions, nearby devices and the relevant cross-device services; they are not guaranteed on every manufacturer’s model.

How much data does a hotspot use?

The hotspot connection itself has no fixed hourly rate. Consumption is determined by the apps, video resolution, downloads and background tasks running on connected devices. The following published estimates illustrate the range:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Activity or quality Estimated use Qualification
SD video About 240 MB per hour AT&T wireless-data guidance estimate
HD video About 900 MB per hour AT&T wireless-data guidance estimate
Video chat (FaceTime or Zoom) About 480 MB per hour AT&T estimate; camera resolution and layout change usage
Online gaming About 60 MB per hour AT&T estimate; game downloads and updates are separate and much larger
Music streaming About 30 MB per hour AT&T estimate; quality setting changes the rate
Standard-definition video About 700 MB per hour AT&T calculator estimate at a different quality profile
High-definition video About 2,500 MB per hour AT&T calculator estimate at a higher quality profile
4K video About 5,850 MB per hour AT&T calculator estimate
Standard-quality streaming video About 700 MB per hour Hong Kong Office of the Communications Authority estimate
High-quality streaming video About 3 GB per hour Hong Kong Office of the Communications Authority estimate

The differing SD and HD figures are not contradictions: services use different codecs, frame rates, resolution targets, buffering strategies and measurement conditions. Treat them as planning ranges, not guarantees. A practical expectation is that one hour of HD video may consume roughly 0.9–3 GB, while a 4K session can approach 5.85 GB.

A simple planning calculation

Estimate each activity separately, multiply hours by its hourly rate, then add an allowance for overhead:

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  1. List the connected activities—for example, two hours of HD video, one hour of video calls and three hours of music.
  2. Multiply using a conservative rate: 2 × 0.9 GB for HD video, 1 × 0.48 GB for calls and 3 × 0.03 GB for music.
  3. Add extra capacity for operating-system updates, cloud synchronization, browser prefetching and variations in resolution. In this example, the listed activities total about 2.07 GB before overhead.
  4. Multiply again if separate devices perform those activities concurrently. Two laptops each streaming HD video can consume roughly twice the single-device estimate.

Netflix and other streaming services adapt quality to bandwidth and settings, so a title watched at “data saver” quality can use far less than the same title at 4K. A laptop may silently download a system update or synchronize a photo library, overwhelming a plan even when visible browsing appears light.

How to control hotspot consumption

  • Set video quality manually. Choose standard or data-saving playback for travel; disable automatic 4K on laptops and televisions.
  • Enable Low Data Mode or Data Saver. On iPhone, review Settings > Wi‑Fi for the connected hotspot and enable Low Data Mode. Android and many apps provide a Data Saver switch.
  • Pause background work. Temporarily stop cloud-drive sync, photo backup, game launchers and automatic software updates.
  • Download before leaving Wi‑Fi. Save maps, music, presentations and video in advance where the service permits.
  • Monitor the host phone. iPhone cellular statistics are under Settings > Cellular; Android commonly shows usage under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs or Data usage. Carrier apps and account pages are the authoritative source for billing.
  • Set a warning or limit. Android can warn or stop mobile data at a threshold. On iPhone, reset cellular statistics at the start of a billing cycle and compare them with the carrier’s meter.
  • Disconnect idle clients. Remove devices from the hotspot list or turn hotspot off when finished. This also reduces battery drain and unauthorized use.

Phone hotspot, data-only eSIM or dedicated hotspot?

Consideration Phone hotspot Data-only eSIM in another device Dedicated cellular hotspot
Simultaneous devices Model and carrier dependent; Pixel documentation cites up to 10 Each eSIM line normally serves its host device; that device may share onward if supported Router-specific; check the manufacturer and carrier limit
Separate line required No Yes, a second data plan or multi-device allowance Usually yes
Carrier hotspot allowance Applies directly; may be capped or throttled Depends on the data-only plan and any tethering rule Depends on the hotspot plan; some plans are designed for routers
Battery and portability Uses the phone’s battery and can generate heat Uses the tablet, laptop or phone battery Separate battery; can serve a group while your phone remains free
Setup convenience Fastest for occasional sessions Requires eSIM activation and device compatibility Requires hardware, activation and initial configuration
Roaming coverage Follows the phone line’s roaming terms Follows the data-only line’s countries and fair-use rules Follows the hotspot SIM/eSIM plan’s coverage and bands
Speed throttling Can begin after the phone plan’s high-speed threshold Plan-specific Plan-specific; radio and signal quality also matter
Monthly cost No additional line, but existing plan data is consumed Additional plan or allowance cost Hardware purchase plus a separate plan in most cases

Choose phone hotspot when use is occasional and your plan has adequate tethering data. Choose a data-only eSIM when a compatible tablet or laptop needs its own connection and you want the phone available for calls. Choose a dedicated hotspot when several people or devices need connectivity repeatedly, because it avoids making the phone the permanent router.

Carrier, device and roaming checks before you buy

  • Confirm that tethering is included in your exact plan and identify any separate hotspot quota or post-threshold speed.
  • Check the maximum number of clients and whether 5 GHz Wi‑Fi, USB or Bluetooth tethering is supported.
  • For a second eSIM, verify that the device is eSIM-capable, unlocked, compatible with the carrier’s bands and approved for that plan.
  • Read roaming country lists and fair-use limits. A line that works domestically may have no roaming data or may restrict tethering abroad.
  • Ask whether the carrier permits data-only eSIMs on tablets, laptops or hotspots; eligibility can vary by country, account type and device generation.

Troubleshooting common hotspot failures

The hotspot switch is missing or clients cannot connect

Check that cellular data is enabled and that the carrier has provisioned tethering. Restart both devices, update their operating systems, and re-enter the Wi‑Fi password. If the network appears but will not authenticate, forget the network on the client and join again. On iPhone, keep Allow Others to Join enabled while testing; on Android, verify that the hotspot has not reached a configured timeout.

Connection is slow

Move the host phone near a window or outdoors, reduce the number of clients and stop large downloads. Congestion, weak signal, a carrier’s high-speed threshold and the hotspot’s Wi‑Fi band can all reduce throughput. A USB connection can be steadier for one laptop, while a dedicated hotspot may perform better for a group.

Data disappears unexpectedly

Inspect the carrier meter and each client’s usage. Look first for operating-system updates, cloud backup, game patches, high-resolution video and multiple browser tabs. Set data-saving controls before reconnecting. If the carrier’s count differs materially from the phone’s estimate, use the carrier record for billing disputes and ask support how tethered traffic is classified.

Bottom line for the two most common questions

Can you use one eSIM on two phones? Not normally at the same time. Transfer the line, add a separate data-only eSIM, or share the active phone through hotspot.

How much data will hotspot use? Use the connected activity to estimate it: music and light gaming may use tens of megabytes per hour, video calls around half a gigabyte, HD video roughly 0.9–3 GB, and 4K video up to about 5.85 GB per hour. Actual use changes with resolution, codec, buffering, background traffic and the number of devices.
