You can’t use a documented, officially supported HBO Max/Max feature to export playback as a screen recording. If you want to watch a show or movie offline, use downloads in the Max app when your plan, title, device, and region allow it. Max’s help pages use the name “Max”; branding and plan options can vary by market.
Can you screen record HBO Max?
The official help pages cited here explain how to download eligible titles for offline viewing, but do not describe a supported way to save playback as a separate video file. They also do not establish that screen recording always produces a black screen, or explain its behavior on every phone, tablet, browser, or capture device.

How to watch HBO Max offline
Max’s documented alternative is downloading eligible content within its app. Downloads are for offline playback in the service, not exported recordings you can edit or share. Max lists these supported device families:
- Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
- Android phones and tablets
- Amazon Fire tablets
Use the Max app on a supported device, find a title that offers downloads, and select its download option. The exact app labels and availability can vary. A supported plan is required, and not every title is downloadable. Max says downloads are not supported on computers or TV devices. Check Max’s download help page for current details in your market.

The Jamaica English download help page retrieved for this article lists the following plan allowances. These are market-specific figures, not universal limits; confirm the current plan details for your account before relying on them.

Why might an HBO Max screen recording be black?
Max’s cited official help pages do not specify how screen recording behaves on particular devices or guarantee that a recording will turn black. Results can depend on the platform and configuration, so a black screen is not something these sources establish as universal. This article does not provide steps to disable or evade copy protection.
Does support for streaming mean support for downloads?
No. Max lists phones, tablets, computers, TVs, streaming players, set-top boxes, and game consoles among supported streaming device types, but its download help page explicitly excludes computers and TV devices from downloads. Is there a legal exception for recording streaming video?
A U.S. Copyright Office regulation includes narrow screen-capture exceptions in a specified educational context. It does not establish a general permission to copy streaming shows or movies. The relevant scope is limited, and the rule should not be read as a general screen-recording entitlement. Read 37 CFR § 201.40.
