What Firefox’s dark mode changes
Firefox separates its own appearance from the color scheme it requests for websites. The browser theme changes interface elements such as menus, as well as built-in pages. Website appearance is a separate setting for page content; it does not guarantee that every site will turn dark. Mozilla explains Firefox themes and website appearance settings.

Turn on dark mode in Firefox on desktop
Make Firefox’s interface dark
- Open the Firefox menu and select Settings.
- Under General > Appearance, choose Dark.
Choose System instead if Firefox should follow your operating system’s appearance. The available browser appearance choices are Light, Dark, and System. Mozilla’s theme instructions describe the interface and built-in pages affected.

Request dark colors for websites
- In Settings, select General.
- Find Language and Appearance > Website appearance.
- Choose Dark, Light, or Automatic System.
This choice is independent of the browser theme. Automatic System follows the relevant system or browser appearance; Dark requests a dark website color scheme. Mozilla notes that privacy settings such as privacy.resistFingerprinting may interfere with some site customization. See Mozilla’s website appearance guidance.

Enable dark theme in Firefox for Android
- Tap the three-dot menu, then Settings.
- In the General section, tap Customize.
- Under Theme, choose Dark.
Choose Follow device theme to track your phone’s appearance, or Light for a light interface. Mozilla’s Android instructions cover these theme choices.
Turn on dark mode in Firefox on iPhone or iPad
Darken Firefox’s interface
- Open the menu at the bottom of the screen, or at the top right on iPad.
- Tap Settings, then Appearance.
- Choose Dark for a fixed dark appearance or Automatic to match the device.
Darken webpage content
Use the separate Website Dark Mode control in Settings, or turn it on from the menu panel. This controls web content separately from Firefox’s interface appearance. Mozilla’s iOS theme guide explains the appearance options, and its Website Dark Mode guide covers webpage content.

Why are websites still light when Firefox is dark?
A dark browser interface does not itself set webpages to dark. On desktop, check Settings > General > Language and Appearance > Website appearance; on iPhone or iPad, check Website Dark Mode. Even with the website setting enabled, pages can look different because sites may handle colors in their own way. If a desktop site does not respond as expected, privacy settings such as privacy.resistFingerprinting can affect some customization; Mozilla identifies it as one possible factor, not the only explanation.

The built-in Dark option is sufficient for a dark browser interface. If you want a different look, Firefox also supports themes managed through Extensions and themes. Mozilla’s theme manager instructions explain where to find them.
