Can You Play Zelda on a Standard Nintendo Switch 2? Compatibility, Editions, and Saves

Yes. A standard Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible Nintendo Switch Zelda games, including the original releases of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Nintendo also sells dedicated Switch 2 Editions of both games, released on June 5, 2025. Your existing physical cartridge or virtual game card runs the Nintendo Switch version; you need the relevant Switch 2 Edition or an applicable upgrade route for edition-exclusive features such as ZELDA NOTES.

What “standard Nintendo Switch 2” can play

“Standard” means the regular Nintendo Switch 2 console, not a special Zelda bundle or a different hardware model. Nintendo states that compatible Nintendo Switch games run on Nintendo Switch 2. That makes the console compatible with the original Nintendo Switch releases of both major open-world Zelda games.

The important distinction is between compatibility and the Switch 2 Edition. Compatibility lets your existing Switch copy start and play as the Nintendo Switch version. A Switch 2 Edition is a separate edition or upgrade path that can add content or improved performance, depending on the title. Nintendo identifies ZELDA NOTES as an exclusive feature of the Switch 2 Editions.

Question Answer
Can a regular Switch 2 play the original Zelda Switch games? Yes, provided the game is a compatible Nintendo Switch release.
Will an old Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom cartridge work? Yes. Insert the physical game card and the console plays the Nintendo Switch version.
Do you need a Switch 2 Edition to play? No. You need one only for the features exclusive to that edition.
When did the dedicated editions launch? June 5, 2025, for both games.
Is ZELDA NOTES included with every copy? No. Nintendo describes it as exclusive to the Switch 2 Editions.

The two ways to play Zelda on Switch 2

1. Use your original Nintendo Switch copy

If you already own a physical cartridge, insert it into the Switch 2 and launch the game. A digital purchase is treated as a virtual game card when available on the console. Nintendo’s product information says that inserting the physical or virtual game card lets you play the Nintendo Switch version, without the additional features exclusive to the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

This is the straightforward option for someone who simply wants to continue playing. You do not have to replace a working copy merely because you bought a Switch 2. The software remains the Nintendo Switch edition, so do not expect the Switch 2-only additions automatically.

  • What you keep: access to the original Nintendo Switch game you own.
  • What you do not automatically get: features identified as exclusive to the Switch 2 Edition, including ZELDA NOTES.
  • What Nintendo does not establish in the product information: a universal price or a single upgrade fee for every Zelda purchase. Any paid-upgrade terms must be checked for the specific game and region.

2. Buy or obtain the Switch 2 Edition

Nintendo released The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition on June 5, 2025. These editions are intended for players who want the Switch 2-specific additions rather than only backward compatibility.

Nintendo’s support documentation explains that some Nintendo Switch games offer either free updates or paid upgrades that add content or improve performance when played on Nintendo Switch 2. The exact route depends on the game and the edition you purchase. The available material does not state one universal Zelda upgrade price, so a retailer listing or Nintendo eShop page should be checked before buying.

What the Zelda Switch 2 Editions add

ZELDA NOTES

ZELDA NOTES is the clearest named difference. Nintendo describes it as exclusive to the Switch 2 Editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. It is not a feature that appears simply because an original Switch cartridge is running on newer hardware.

Using ZELDA NOTES requires more than the game alone. Nintendo lists these requirements:

  • A Nintendo Account.
  • Persistent internet access.
  • A compatible smart device.
  • The Nintendo Switch app.

That means a player who buys a Switch 2 Edition should plan for a connected companion-device setup. If you play entirely offline or do not have a compatible smart device, the base game remains playable, but ZELDA NOTES cannot be used under Nintendo’s stated requirements.

Other edition-specific changes

Nintendo’s general Switch 2 support language says that eligible games may receive additional content or improved performance through free updates or paid upgrades. It does not provide a single list of identical improvements for every game. Therefore, do not assume that an enhancement advertised for one Switch 2 title applies to both Zelda games. Use the product page for the exact edition when comparing feature lists.

The safe rule is simple: your old copy provides the Nintendo Switch version; the dedicated Switch 2 Edition is the purchase to make when a listed Switch 2 feature matters to you.

Breath of the Wild: which copy should you use?

If you already own the Switch cartridge or digital game

Keep using it on Switch 2 if your priority is access to the original game. The console supports the compatible Nintendo Switch release, and Nintendo says the original version runs without features exclusive to the Switch 2 Edition.

If you are buying for the first time

Choose The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition if you want the edition-specific experience and ZELDA NOTES. Choose the original Nintendo Switch edition only when its lower purchase cost, an existing copy, or simple backward-compatible access is more important than those additions. The supplied Nintendo information does not state current regional prices, so a price comparison cannot be made reliably without checking your market.

Tears of the Kingdom: the save-data warning

Original version access

An original physical or virtual game card lets Switch 2 play the Nintendo Switch version of Tears of the Kingdom. As with Breath of the Wild, that route does not automatically include features reserved for the Switch 2 Edition.

Documented transfer limitation

Nintendo’s Tears of the Kingdom product information contains a specific caveat: the second save-data file created in the Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred to the original Nintendo Switch version. This is narrower than saying that all saves are incompatible. It means you should not assume that every save slot created in the Switch 2 Edition can move freely between the two editions.

If you expect to alternate between a Switch 2 and an original Switch, decide where each save will be maintained before creating additional progress in the Switch 2 Edition. Keep the two edition names clear when checking your software and save-data options, and treat the second Switch 2 Edition save file as subject to Nintendo’s stated transfer restriction.

Which option is right for you?

Use your old copy when continuity matters most

Use the original cartridge or virtual game card when you already own the game, want to avoid buying it again, and only need the standard Nintendo Switch experience. This is also the least disruptive choice for a playthrough you have already started, because you are not changing editions simply to use the new console.

Choose a Switch 2 Edition when the additions matter

Check the details before paying for an upgrade

Nintendo distinguishes between free updates and paid upgrades across compatible games. Because the terms can vary by title and region, confirm whether your existing Zelda license qualifies, whether the upgrade is free or paid, and which features are included. Do not infer those details from the fact that the original game launches successfully.

How to start playing

  1. Identify your copy. Decide whether you have a physical Nintendo Switch cartridge, a digital Nintendo Switch license, or a dedicated Switch 2 Edition.
  2. Insert or select the game. Put the physical game card in the Switch 2, or select the virtual game card for the digital copy. A compatible original copy launches as the Nintendo Switch version.
  3. Confirm the edition shown by the software. If you expected Switch 2 features, verify that the title is the Switch 2 Edition rather than the original Nintendo Switch release.
  4. Set up ZELDA NOTES only if you have the required equipment. Use the Nintendo Switch app with a Nintendo Account, persistent internet access, and a compatible smart device.
  5. Plan save use before switching editions. For Tears of the Kingdom, remember that the second save-data file created in the Switch 2 Edition cannot transfer to the original Nintendo Switch version.

Common problems and what they mean

The cartridge starts, but ZELDA NOTES is missing

That behavior is expected when the cartridge is the original Nintendo Switch version. Nintendo says original physical and virtual game cards play the Switch version without Switch 2 Edition-exclusive features. Obtain the relevant Switch 2 Edition or qualifying upgrade if ZELDA NOTES is the reason you bought the console.

The game works, but you expected a different edition

Successful launch proves compatibility, not that the software has been converted into a Switch 2 Edition. Check the product identity shown for the installed or inserted game and compare it with the dedicated edition listing.

ZELDA NOTES will not connect

Check all three Nintendo-stated dependencies: the Nintendo Switch app, a Nintendo Account, and persistent internet access, plus a compatible smart device. Missing any one of these prevents the companion feature from meeting its requirements even when the main game itself runs.

A save does not move back to an original Switch

For Tears of the Kingdom, the second save-data file created in the Switch 2 Edition is expressly excluded from transfer to the original Nintendo Switch version. Do not treat that file as interchangeable with every other save slot.

Bottom line for buyers

A standard Nintendo Switch 2 is enough to play Zelda. Your old Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom copy works as the Nintendo Switch version, whether it is physical or digital. The dedicated Switch 2 Editions, launched June 5, 2025, are optional for basic play but necessary for edition-exclusive additions such as ZELDA NOTES. If you choose Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition, account for Nintendo’s specific restriction on transferring its second save-data file back to the original Switch version.
