Yes—but only if you have a PS5 Digital Edition Slim in the CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 model groups and add Sony’s separately sold Disc Drive (CFI-ZDD1). The original launch Digital Edition (the CFI-1000 family) is not listed as compatible. Internet access is required once to pair the drive with the console.
The short answer
Sony describes the standard Digital Edition as “an all-digital version of the PS5 console with no disc drive.” That description applies until a compatible removable drive is installed. On the slim Digital Edition models identified by Sony—CFI-2000 and CFI-2100—the optional Disc Drive for PS5 Digital Edition consoles, model CFI-ZDD1, adds support for physical game and movie discs.

Compatibility is determined by the console’s model group, not simply by whether the box says “Digital Edition” or “Slim.” Check the model information on the console or its packaging before buying the accessory. A drive is not a supported upgrade for the original launch Digital Edition in the CFI-1000 family.

The CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 references are model groups, sometimes printed with additional regional characters in the full model number. Match the core group shown on your hardware or documentation. If you cannot identify a CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 Slim model, pause before purchasing the accessory.

What the CFI-ZDD1 Disc Drive adds
Physical PS5 games
With the compatible drive attached, the console can read supported PS5-format Ultra HD Blu-ray game discs. This gives a Digital Edition Slim access to physical PS5 releases rather than limiting it to games obtained through digital downloads.
Compatible PS4 game discs
Sony’s accessory manual also lists compatible PS4-format Blu-ray game discs. “Compatible” matters: the drive does not turn every PS4 disc into a guaranteed playable title. Compatibility follows the console’s supported PS4 game list and the specific disc format.
Movie discs
The drive reads 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD video media. A Digital Edition Slim therefore becomes capable of disc-based movie playback as well as physical games once the drive is installed and paired.

All of these capabilities depend on having the supported drive physically attached. Removing it returns the console to its original all-digital configuration.

Internet is required during first-time pairing
Sony states: “Internet connection required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 console upon setup.” Plan for an online connection when you install the accessory. This is a setup requirement, not an indication that every disc must be downloaded or that the drive is permanently unusable offline after pairing.
Before starting, make sure you have:
- A PS5 Digital Edition Slim in the CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 group, or a PS5 Pro listed as compatible.
- Sony Disc Drive CFI-ZDD1, rather than an unrelated optical accessory.
- A stable internet connection for the initial console-and-drive pairing.
- Enough time to complete any system software update requested during setup.
- The console powered down and positioned so the drive can be attached securely.
How to add the drive to a compatible console
- Confirm the model. Read the model group on the console or packaging. Proceed only when it is CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or a PS5 Pro included in Sony’s drive listing.
- Shut down the PS5 completely. Do not attach or remove the accessory while the console is running. Disconnect power if the installation instructions supplied with the drive require it.
- Attach the CFI-ZDD1 drive. Follow the physical installation directions in the drive’s manual for your console revision. Make sure the housing is seated and the connector is fully engaged.
- Reconnect power and start the console. The PS5 should detect the newly attached drive during startup or the next setup screen.
- Connect to the internet. Allow the console to reach PlayStation Network services so it can pair the drive. Without this connection, the initial pairing cannot be completed.
- Finish the on-screen setup. Install any required system update and wait for confirmation that the drive is paired.
- Test the media you intend to use. Insert a supported PS5 game, compatible PS4 game, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray or DVD and confirm that the console recognizes it.
The exact physical clips or cover pieces differ by console revision, so use the manual supplied with CFI-ZDD1 for the removal and attachment sequence. Do not force a cover or connector that does not align.
Digital Slim plus drive versus buying a disc-equipped PS5
If you are choosing a console rather than upgrading one, the practical differences are below. Sony’s compatibility information does not state a universal retail price for the drive or for each console configuration, so compare the current prices in your market separately.

The add-on route is most useful when you already own a compatible Slim or want to start with a lower-cost digital configuration and retain the option of buying discs later. A disc-equipped model is simpler if you know you will use physical games or movies immediately and do not want a separate installation.

Why model checking matters before you buy
The “Slim” label is not enough
Sony’s supported list is tied to CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 model groups. A listing that merely says “PS5 Digital” or “Slim Digital” does not prove compatibility. Ask the seller for the full model number or inspect the console label.
The original Digital Edition is a different hardware family
The launch Digital Edition belongs to the CFI-1000 family. Sony’s current drive listing does not include it, so an external USB optical drive or a CFI-ZDD1 purchased for a Slim should not be treated as a supported workaround. The accessory is designed for the specified console hardware.
Do not confuse an integrated drive with a removable one
A PS5 Disc Edition already has its drive installed. Buying CFI-ZDD1 for that console is unnecessary for ordinary disc playback. The accessory is relevant to compatible digital configurations and the PS5 Pro listing that supports it.
Buying checklist
- Model: Verify CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 for a Digital Edition Slim, or confirm that your PS5 Pro configuration is included.
- Accessory: Look specifically for “PS5 Disc Drive CFI-ZDD1.” Avoid assuming that another PlayStation optical component is interchangeable.
- Included parts: Check that the drive’s required covers or attachment hardware are present for your console revision.
- Internet: Have a working connection available for the one-time pairing process.
- Media: Decide whether you need PS5 game discs, compatible PS4 discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD, or all of these.
- Condition and returns: If buying used, verify that the drive can be paired and that the seller accepts a return if the model is incompatible.
- Total cost: Compare the combined price of the digital console and drive with a disc-equipped PS5 in your region; no single worldwide price is established by the compatibility information.
Troubleshooting common problems
The console does not recognize the drive
Power the console down, reseat the drive according to its manual and confirm that the console is in a supported model group. A CFI-1000 Digital Edition will not become compatible through reseating, a firmware reset or a USB adapter.

Pairing stops or cannot begin
Check the internet connection, restart the console and retry the setup. Pairing is required when the drive is first installed, so an offline setup cannot complete. If the console is online but still refuses to pair, verify the drive model and install any pending system software update.
A PS4 disc does not work
The supported category is compatible PS4-format Blu-ray game discs, not every disc that happens to be labeled PS4. Check the game’s compatibility and inspect the disc for damage. Test a known-supported disc before concluding that the drive is defective.
A movie disc is rejected
Confirm that the media is one of the listed types—4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray or DVD—and that the drive is fully paired. A non-supported format will not gain support from a software setting.

If the console is from the CFI-1000 family, stop before opening the accessory if possible and use the retailer’s return process. Sony’s stated compatibility list does not support adding CFI-ZDD1 to that launch Digital Edition.
What changes after installation?
Your games and saves do not move between digital and physical formats automatically. The drive simply gives the compatible console a way to read supported discs. Digital purchases remain accessible through the console’s digital library, while physical titles are accessed by inserting their discs into the paired drive.
The removable design also means you can use the console without the drive attached, then reinstall it when you need disc media. Keep the accessory and its installation parts together so a future move or repair does not leave the drive without the hardware needed to mount it.
